I have a pet squirrel named Rocky for 14 months. Rocky was abandoned one day at my Doctor's house. He hopped on my shoe and would not leave. My Dr. told he that Rocky had been there since the day before. He was fully furred and the cutest. That night he almost passed. We fed him Gatorade, bought a cage, heating pad and followed some sound advice. He was too weak to stand by the next day. We fed him a scalded milk formula with an eye dropper and slowly he gained strength. He is now a great friend. He is to friendly to survive outside in the wild. He has no skills to exist. And he would miss me, as I am his best friend. We play for an hour to an hour and a half every night. I have him squirrel-sat by my mother-in-law when I am forced away from him. Rocky plays for about a half hour and the other hour or so we cuddle. My wife joins us during play time now and again. Rocky rests in my hands and I pat him and cuddle him. He loves it. Rocky gets a bath once a week (just warm water). His large pen is cleaned every day. I feed him healthy fruits, a few nuts, and a nut ball every day. I have a small parrot and two dogs that keep him company when I am gone. They inspect his pen to see what all the racket is, often. The chihuahua seams to really get him going. But they do not play together due to his razor sharp nails. WE ALL LOVE ROCKY

I also have a pet Grey Squirrel. I took him away from my cat when he was very little and fed him goat milk and now he's the most spoiled pet I have. He rides almost everywhere with me on my shoulder when I'm at home and loved jumping on my dog and going for a ride when we go on walks. His name is Bitter and he is def. the best indoor pet I've had.

I found my squirrel in May. He was in my driveway and couldn't move either hind leg or his tail. He was not a baby, but not full grown either. He was scared and needless to say not very friendly toward people. I caught him and after a month or two he became more and more trusting. He has since regained use of one leg and his tail but still drags one leg around. He runs all over the house while I'm home, watches TV with me, listens to music, and naps with me. He really has become the most awesome companion! He is not particularly friendly to anyone else (though he is not aggressive) but he has become a great pet and friend to me. I can't believe that such an affectionate, intelligent and clean animal has been around all my life and I never took particular notice...never heard of anyone who had a pet squirrel until now. I am always worrying that I am not educated enough about him and his needs so I am always surfing trying to learn more...thanks for your website!

I see Annonymous has Climbed up on a soap box about Flying Squirrels not to be kept as pets, that they belong in the wild. Well my most intelligent friend so should be cats, dogs, horses... Have u ever heard of DOMESTICATED? Do u have any idea the average lifespan of a flying Squirrel in the wild? They are eaten like Popcorn out of my oak grove by the hawks and bats! I have a male that I took from a bird that had nearly killed him. I have had him for 3 years and we tolerate each other quite well. He certainly eats better than in the wild. He is never hungry, cold, or lacks companionship. Without intervention he would be dead long ago. So I ask what is the harm of prolonging the life of the little rodent? Every day I go down to the oak grove and see tons of dead flying squirrels. I guess I am being EVIL for caring for this one and not feeding him to the Hawks!! Gee Get a life and worry about something real...

I found a baby red squirrel. The websites I found were extremely helpful! "Simon" is doing great and in 4-5 weeks will hopefully be ready to be released.

I have a pet Southern Flying Squirrel,his name is Rocky. I found him after a bad storm. His eyes still closed, I fed him via syringe with Kitten Milk Formula until his teeth came in. He is now almost a year old.
In his large, tall cage, is a Calcium Salt Lick, but I add Repti Cal to his meals every night. He gets a variety of things to eat... cooked ground chicken/turkey, Mealworms, and raw Veggies/Fruits like: Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Kale, Green Beans, Apples, Grapes, Blueberries, Strawberries, and Blackberries. Nuts with shell on for his teeth: Peanuts, Pecans, Walnut, Pistachios, and lots of acorns off the trees found where I found him.
He is my buddy and hangs out with me most of the day and evenings. At night he goes wild! I got him a Rodent Wheel from Sun Coast Sugargliders with the sand paper in it to keep his nails trimmed.
Recently he has started to bite! I think it is because it is the beginning of mating season and he is frustated. :o(

Last August (about 5 months ago) I found a baby red squirrel on the ground in the grass next to it's (sadly) smushed sibling. They were so tiny, at first I thought there was a frog or toad on the ground and when I looked closer I saw what I thought was a baby chipmunk because it was slightly brownish with two black stripes. At this time, the baby was about 1 week old with closed eyes and ears. Later when he started to get a fuzzy tail, we realized he was a squirrel. In the meantime, we kept him warm at first by cutting the toe off of a "fuzzy sock" like slipper-socks and put it around a small tupperware bowl. He stayed curled up inside of it all day long. Before long, we got a small heating pad to keep him warm as well. We bought puppy milk and fed him with an eye dropper every 3 hours, yes that means waking up in the middle of the night. At first he only ate about 2 ML, but that increased quickly and sometimes he would even eat 3-4 eye droppers. We always fed him until he wouldn't accept any more. By the 4th week his eyes opened and shortly thereafter his ears opened. At this time we started to leave sunflower seeds in his cage just in case he got curious. He began to teeter on his back legs, trying to stand up and eat. This was probably the cutest part of all, when they are learning to stand up. We still continued milk feedings, and as he started to eat more solid foods we spaced the milk feedings out more and more until at about 12 weeks he was completely off the milk. He now eats a variety of nuts including walnuts and shaved almonds (his favorites), pine seeds, sunflower seeds, in-the-shell-unsalted-peanuts, outdoor squirrel feed (which has the likes of dried corn, in-shell-sunflower seeds, etc). He loves banana chips, apple, peapods, cherries (real, not maraschino), dried fruits, and pretty much any fruits. He will not eat mushrooms or celery, though.
He lives in a big bird cage which we regularly fill with branches from pine trees (and in the summer he gets leafy-trees too). He makes a mess throwing pine needles out of his cage, but he loves it, it makes it more wilderness-y or him. We keep him in an un-carpeted area so we can sweep up his messes :) He also gets to run free in the house for a while every day. He is very nice, will jump right on you while you are walking by. However, his nails are sharp so it is probably not a good idea to let kids play with them. They also try to eat your drywall and can tear up your curtains, so you have to keep a constant eye on them while they are loose. We bought a bunch of edible wooden logs/tikihouses/etc the pet stores sell for rabbits and hamsters or other small animals. He chews on those, which is very important to keep his teeth trimmed. A red squirrel is a lot of work from babyhood to adulthood, but also such a joy. We will not be "acclimating him to the wild" He is our pet, he loves people and we feel it would be cruel to take him from his home and shove him out into a cold, harsh world. After all, they live only an average of 3 years in the wild due to all the dangers of other animals and cars, and can live up to 10 yrs in captivity.
