Heya my name is Kel
I have a chocolate brown and Sugar white female syrian hamster called Phoebe Sugar-Ann. She is 1 year and 4 months old. I have had her for just over a year now but she's always escaping! She is quite a challenge as she can open her cage door, Open the lid to her ball, open her play pen lid with her teeth and climb the stairs!!! her favourite hiding place is under the dishwasher, which is very annoying. She's the cleverist hamster i know! Anyway i just wanted to say thanks as i found your page extremly useful and i am using the information on it to do a presentation on hamsters at school, but it will help me with mine too! Thanks again

Does it matter if I use a hamster cage for a mouse?

It depends on what type. If it is a cage with bars, you will want to make sure the bars are spaced close enough together that the mouse cannot get it's head through. A glass aquarium/terrarium would be fine, though.

I have two hamsters. Tupac is a teddy bear (syrian) hamster and Biggie is a short-haired (also syrian) hamster. They are the most cutest, fattest, healthyest, sweetest hamsters you'll ever know(especially Tupac)!

My granddaughter was holding her new pet dwarf hamster (Pinky) and Pinky started throwing up the bedding and poop. First, was she holding the hamster too tight? It didn't seem like she was, but maybe. Second, I know they eat their poop, but do they eat bedding too?

Unlike rabbits, hamsters don't normally eat their poop or bedding. It is possible that she was holding it too tight, but it is hard to say for sure. Hamsters do need lots of chew toys, they are chewers for sure, so make sure Pinky has lots of chew toys and see if that helps.

I have a hamster that I recently got, I have never seen her eating her own bedding or poop. Yes, she might have been holding her too tight or not the right way. You should never hold her by the neck or hold onto her stomach too tight. When you first get a hamster the first thing you should do is not touch her or play with her until she gets used to the surroundings. This might be a result of being scared or possibly a disorder. Leave her alone for a few days and try this approach again. If she continues to do this you should see a vet.

In the "coolest comments" section, the person says that it is normal for a hamster to chew on their bars. Yes, it is common, but it is not a good sign! It means the hamster is bored! They can easily damage their teeth chewing on the bars. Give you hamster more excercise, more space, more (healthy!) things to chew on and it won't be gnawing on the bars.

Hi, my hamster, and i love her to bits.but ive noticed today that her eyes have gone a light pink... has she gone blind, or is it normal because of her age? please comment asap: thanks. :)

I keep reading comments that say this about hamsters, but I have a few hamsters that chew on their cage bars no matter what I do. I think they are just spoiled. I take them out for about 4 hours every night, they have HUGE cages, all kinds of toys and things to chew on, exercise wheels in their cages, everything. But they seem to think that if they are awake they should be out of the cage and with me.
I just thought I'd put in my experience in case the same was true for anyone else. Let me know.

Hi I have a question ...I just got my first hamster ever...it's all white with red eyes, the people who I get from say that is young like a month or so, but I don't know if its a Syrian or a dwarf cause I heard that in both cases are albino hamsters......he's like 3 inches long.....if you can help me find out or help me find a web site with this kind of information i'll really appreciate it.
Thank you (sorry my bad English)

I'm not sure if what hamster it is. But my knowledge is that any animal can be albino. So it really could be either. Do some research on the fur types, what you feed it, and some other things. That may tell you what it is.

I got my hamster roxy about last year! She is doing amazing and I love her. I play with her everyday, give her a treat every 3 days, change her water every morning and night, put new food in her dish every 2 days, and on the day between - a little food and something to chew on. She plays in her ball for 30 minutes everyday and I always have her with me in my hand.

I got a hamster about 5 weeks ago. It was a baby and I have held it several times a day and allow it to crawl all over me. My problems is - it will not walk into my hand or eat food from my hand. I have to reach in and grab it. I have had many hamsters growing up and my children had them. Any suggestions to make it a little tamer?

That's great! I wish I had the same luck though. I got hamster last week and ended taking it back after 3 days because he had the symptoms of wet tail and it turns out he did and died on Sunday this week.
  • melanieb - 2010-08-21
You should not have her in your hand all the time she needs time to rest.

Hey, I bought a campbell's russian dwarf hamster named Dolce (Doll-chey) 10 days ago and noticed that the whole 3rd level of her cage was completly soaked after about 5 days, and that the whole right side of the main floor was too. and I was wondering if somebody knew of a certain reason why that would be? thanks

If you have a water thing in the 3rd story of your hamsters cage it can leak.
  • sarah - 2010-08-30
The water bottle is probably leaking.
