About a month ago my husband comes with a shoebox this little 'thing' in the corner; I thought he was pulling a prank & had a mouse, but he said he found a baby squirrel in his mom's yard across the street. He said look on the internet & find out what to do with it. So I did & found out she was approximately 4-5 weeks old, eyes still closed. I started feeding her puppy milk from a can with a plastic syringe, & she has been doing great. Now she's probably 8 weeks old & I've just fallen in love with her. You bond when you're feeding them like a baby & know that they depend on you so much. She is sweet & has a great appetite! I still feed her some formula, sometimes with whipping cream, apple sauce, or mashed banana. She also eats on her own avocado, strawberry, banana, mango, carrot, & she'll nibble on pecans & cheerios. She doesn't really care much for the rodent block, but nibbles on it a little, but the same piece has been in there for days (I clean her dish everyday, & it doesn't look touched so I put it back in there.) She loves chewing on the sticks in her pen & I saw her nibbling on her calcium stone so was happy about that. She'll try nibbling on ME & I try to discourage her by given her a special stick I bought for them to chew on. She loves to go to sleep in my pocket of my hoodie, so now that's our thing; after I feed her I put a hoodie on with pockets & walk around the house & do stuff for HOURS and she's snoozing away! I love it! We have 2 small dogs & 2 cats inside & I've tried to introduce her to them & the one dog acts like she wants to eat her, & she other is very protective (she would stare when I'd feed her as a baby & sometimes lick the squirrel.) She other dog did more than 'try to lick', she snapped at her! & I said no way, you're staying away from her!! The one cat doesn't really pay attention to her & the other one watches with interest (not sure what's she thinking though!)Rocky (the squirrel) is running around a lot more & will scamper around on the couch & I have to watch her closely so the other animals don't get any ideas. Tillie, the one cat who shows interest, swatted toward her a couple times, I think playing, but still being careful. And the protective dog, Precious, doesn't know what to think with her bouncing around; it startles her & I have to watch to make sure she doesn't step on Rocky trying to get away from her. I love Rocky & so glad she's part of our lives! She's soft, fuzzy, and just a blessing to me, because I've never raised a small animal like that so it feels good that I've done well so far and she's alive & healthy. I like finding out about other people who raise squirrels & learning more about what to do to keep her happy! Sorry so long, just had a lot to say about my girl! :)

I have 2... brother and sister. They are about 2-3 months old and very friendly! They have free run of a bedroom with a HUGE cage that has a nesting box in it, I just keep the cage door open and they come in and out as they want. My question is this... what are you doing about 'potty arraingments'?

Well if u do, guinea pigs are suppose to b kept in pairs or more. They're very social animals and become depressed easily from loneliness. But if u r home and spend a majority of ur time with it I'd recommend a friend. Employees in pets stores may say its ok to keep one but most don't really know what they're talking about. And b sure to give them plenty of space. Food and hay and vedgitbles daily. . And guinea pigs can't store vitamin c so give them orange slices often and u can even buy drops to put in their water. And don't forget lots of love.

When i was about 9 years old, i got a baby female guinea pig. I named her Mollie just for the heck of it. She is an abbi-haired guinea pig. I already had an elderly guinea pig named Gorjet. I got her and rescued her from an irresponsible adult. I am a kid and took better care of her. Then she died and Mollie is about 3-4 years old. Now that mollie needs a friend, I am going to get her two little friends named Spunky and Abbi. She is going to love it. I am even more. If my mom would let me, and we had enough money, I would take every gp in the rescues, shelters, and petshops. When I get older I am going to be a guinea pig breeder, and a darn good one too.

i found a week old baby squirrel and hand fed him for about 8 weeks he was eating nuts and doing great i left the other day to help someone out to come home to find him dead his name was rocky and he was the best pet id ever had i always want him to be remembered love you rocky and we miss you sweetheart our house just is not a home anymore with out you love dad

My bunny Oreo is very very soft and cuddly! Oreo is 3 years old and very nice. Oreo likes to eat bunny food, carrots, grass, dandelions, lettuce and apples. She does not bite unless she is very hungry and needs food. I like to play with Oreo outside in the summer. In the winter Oreo runs around in the basement and in the summer she likes to be in her cage under the pine tree.

I've just recently gotten a baby raccoon that I have hand raised from a bottle. I want to have him neutered and was curious about the procedure, is it done like a cat or dog neuter. He is the sweetest like guy.

If you plan on keeping a raccoon as a pet he/she will need to be spayed by a qualfied vet. You may wish to seek out a vet with exotic animal experience, go to one of the many raccoon chat rooms for advice as to a good vet in your area. Depending on the laws of your state you may need to provide documentation to prove that the raccoon was not taken from the wild but purchased from a licensed dealers. Some states require permits. If you live in NE FL I know of a great vet. Worming and vaccinations are a must do too.

Hello, I was hoping someone could help... Is it legal to have raccoons in NC as a pet? Their mother died, and 2 babies were left at birth ... there was no way they could survive on their own. People took them in, and bottle fed, and now they can no longer keep them due to kids, so we are wanting to take them in. We have called local vet to find out about having 1 of them fixed, along with shots/worming etc. I have searched high and low all over internet on NC law but I keep finding conflicting information on this. Any help would greatly be appreciated. BTW they are now 15 weeks old, and hand tame, so they wouldnt be able to be released back into the wild..have been bottle fed, and well taken care of since birth. Anyone we ask....cant give us a straight answer. Thank you for your time, I hope to hear back from you. I reside South East of Charlotte,NC.

i have worked with many racoons yes it is similar to a dog or cat getting fixed. make sure you pick an apropriate animal hospital especially ones that already deal with wildlife

Hehehe, you are an animal lover! So what shall you get... I've had chinchillas and they're very cool, though not quite as snuggly as cat or bunny (definitely more snuggly than a turtle) and they can't take hot temperatures, so there's that to consider. But they are so soft and are curious. Now I'm wanting a bunny myself, and am thinking of one of those really big ones, so I can take if for walks... (but will have to research that some more:)) Anyway, good luck on your decision making, I'm sure whatever you get you'll have a great time and wonderful friend.

I have had Raccoons as "pets". I use the word pet loosely, because there were more like members of the family. I agree that 99% of people who want a pet raccoon will probably not be able to properly take care of them. They are so very precious when they are babies, but like everything else, they grow up. I kept my coonies inside and they had full run of the house. They were never caged and were allowed to go in and out at will. They chose to stay inside most of the time and I have never had one that went out and did not come back. They used a litter box that was filled with water instead of litter. I simply dumped out the dirty water once or twice a day and as long as the water was kept relatively clean, they never used the potty anywhere else except the box. They are extremely curious and those little "hands" are constantly feeling of everything around them. I get the biggest kick in the world out of them and would take in another in a NY second, but I know what to expect and know that I can handle it. They are as destructive and mischieveious as they are cute. They can get into anything, anywhere. I had childproof locks on EVERY SINGLE CABINET IN MY HOUSE! They can open medicine bottles, the refrigerator (nothing like coming downstairs in the middle of the night to see what the noise is only to find a raccoon sitting in the fridge, eating what looked good and tossing the rest onto the kitchen floor), they will unplug your clocks, tv's ect., break your trinkets and whatnots, hide your keys, chew the buttons off your cell phone, and yes...they DO and WILL BITE. They have very sharp claws and teeth and can inflict damage even when not meaning to. They (at least mine did) become very territorial towards their house and their family. You must put them behind closed doors before letting company inside. Mine would not tolerate the presence of anyone that did not live in the house. If a thief had ever broken into the house, he/she would have been easy to find later. If they managed to get out of the house, you could just check the local ER for a shredded person! So...if you are super patient, don't mind replacing material possessions, can take pain from bites and scratches, have adequate space, never go on vacation, have excellent homeowners insurance, rarely have company and if you have the proper paperwork/licenses to keep one, go ahead. But please please! Be sure you can take care of it FOREVER or provide for it in case you are unable to.

You nailed it. I have had mine for two years. We bought him from a breeder, as a baby. He is fixed & vaccinated. He is my son. You are absolutely correct. I talk a lot of people out of the idea because it takes a rare, certain person to be a Forever Mom. If an owner were to decide they don't want the pet anymore, chances are this beautiful animal would wind up being put down at some point, as they don't like serious change. Therefore, one must make a life long commitment to this pet. I am fortunate Gunner has myself & his daddy, otherwise, there would be no vacation for me. Only one of us goes at a time..the other remains home with him. As far as his minor mood swings (like any person has), he has learned my stern voice, 'don't you bite me.' I do want to point out that tbe column above is incorrect, which I am sure you noticed too... For those unaware, DO NOT FEED RACCOONS CAT FOOD OR TABLE SCRAPS!!!!! A good quality DOG food & HEALTHY people food (as snacks). Nothing pertaining to tomatoes, onions, garlic, CHOCOLATE....cat food will eventually harm & kill internal organs, chocolate can kill immediately, & the other at the least will cause major tummy trouble. I feed mine Iams weight control dog food, celery, frozen green beans (awesome snack!), & fresh spinach leaves. Respect your baby, & he/she will show you respect & love in return :-)
