hello, i live in washington state and i have a ornate box turtle named zoey. i got her a few years back along with 4 others. i was not educated very well on diseases and such things and when the others caught boot fly, i didn't know wat the heck to do. for 2 years i thought they were all dead until one summer i found her baskng in her out door pen. she is very hardy but eats almost nothing but meat(night crallers in particular)and occasionlly a blackberry or two. they are truly wonderful turtles, but make sure it has a large enough pen(28 sq feet minimum).

I bought two baby sliders from Chinatown yesterday, as I was in the market for a new pet, anyway. I named them Ickle and Pickle. ^_^ They both have soft-shell (malnutrition, I guess), so I'm kind of worried, and they don't seem to eat anything I give them. Maybe they're nervous. They're adorable, though. I think this is a nice alternative to that Borzoi puppy I've always wanted.

We love our red ear slider, her name is Cleo. We got her when she was a baby and she has gotten pretty big. I buy ghost shrimp for her to eat, she loves to chase them and then eat them. Now that summer is here my girls and I go out and catch grasshoppers, crickets, and june bugs. I dont know what we will do when winter comes. Sometimes I think I pay more attention to her than our dogs, lol!

I have a red eared slider. His name is Jar-Jar. I've had him for 5 years and he has a 7 inch shell. I have a 25 gallon tank that has a ramp and he uses to go in and out as he pleases. He likes to run around the house. Since I started to let him out about a year ago. He has become very social. He will try to crawl up your leg, but he usually needs help. He likes to sit in my lap. It's so cool. He loves to eat feeder fish. (not goldfish) He also likes his pellets and insects too. I have had other turtles before, but sliders seem to be more fun. Great Pet!!

I bought two baby turtles in chinatown, total impulse buy. They are called Michaelangelo and Raphael. Mikey is awesome because he is always swimming around and stuff, and he LOVES to eat. Raphael is kind of an a**hole, though. Now they live in a big glass bowl and people love coming over and seeing them (it's been about 9 weeks now). The best thing about these turtles is that they are so easy to take care of. I change the water every once in a while, and feed them every couple days. Their basking light is on a timer, so it just about takes care of itself!

As a treat, whenever I kill any sort of insect, I toss it in their tank. They love to eat that. I swatted a fly in my elevator yesterday, so I picked it up and dropped it in there! I think I might pick up some insects at the store tonight on my way home, to feed the little guys!

I have four sliders, two males and two females. They are 25 years old and very large. I am currently incubating 4 eggs and expect the babies in June! Turtles can be a lot of work to take care of, but they are worth it if you have the time.

My boyfriend and I got a very good deal on a softshell and tank set up. we named him "flapjack" and gave him some native live fresh water plants. he seems to lean more towards the pellet food rather than the school of guppies he shares his tank with. we are very happy with our snap judgment on taking the little guy. our dog loves to watch him swim around.

I have one western box turtle as well as 6 adult easterns, 4 cross breeds western/eastern that I hatched as well as 2 russian tortoises. I find that the western is very sensitive to the climate on the east coast. He hibernates all winter with the other turtles. This is the first year that I did not have to bring him to the vet for a vitamin A shot. He is now in his 6th year. I have had him since he is a hatchling. To say that a western box turtle will not bite is not correct. I'm not sure if its because he relates fingers to food or he is defending himself
but he will lunge at any fingers or toes in his general area. You have to be careful when feeding him because even though he is small still his bite is painful. I can foresee him breaking the skin maybe this year! I find that the western and the crossbreeds will eat more fruit and veggies than the easterns which seem to eat mostly a carnivorus diet with few fruit and veggies. The most favorite food for all the box turtles is garden snails. They really love them and they eat the shells too which I would guess is a great source of calcium for them. Box turtles are great pets if you can keep them outdoors at least in the summer. They become anorexic if they are not happy with their surroundings
