Hello. I have owned a Goliath Bird Eater, Salome, for about 3 months now. She seems health and stays active most of the time. I peered into her cage yesterday and noticed that she had started to dig/burrow in the corner of the cage. I looked a little closer and notice that just inches from her was one of her legs completely off of her body (with no other leg to replace it as if she had molted). I'm freaking out. Is this normal? I can't find anywhere on the internet where such a thing is addressed. She was still alive when I left for work this morning. Please help!

Spiders have the ability to shed legs the way starfish can regrow their body parts. All spiders have a joint in their legs near the base which breaks away when the leg is grabbed or caught in something. The open stump is closed off by muscular contraction at the joint and blood loss is immediately stopped. If a leg is injured in any way the pider may decide that it is more trouble than it is worth and pull it off itself. The leg will not totally be replaced with the next moult, it will take several sheds for the new leg to be the same length as the other legs

i have a goliath and she only sits in her water dish she will not eat or move from her water dish. I there something wrong with her?

My boyfriend has a female Goliath Bird Eating spider who is now pushing her body against the top of the cage and I think she's trying to escape. I'm very afraid of her and I am terrified she will get out. The cage is making cracking noises and I'm over it. Where can we take her to get rid of her? Thanks! Barb

Don't just get rid of her, sounds like it's time to buy a new cage.

Defnitely buy a stronger tank. If she can reach the lid, its probably not deep enough. Does she has room to burrow? There are lots of arachnid and reptile rescuers who will take her off your hands for free. If you are scared of spiders they probably aren't the best pet for you.

If you have city (if you pay for water) water then the water has already been treated so it is safe. If you have well water, tiy cab have the water tested, usually for free, at a pet store or purchase a kit to test the water with. Chances are real good , if you can drink it so can they.

Isn't chlorine a concern in tap water? I always use distilled water or water that was carbon filtered to remove the chlorine?

I had this spider for a month. the day i got it i tried to hold it and it bit me. i had to go to the hospital, it's bitten me 5 times at least. i sold it to a guy who killed it accidentally because it bit him, and he had an allergic reaction to its
venom and he almost died! so i held a chilean rose-haired tarantula and it never tried to bite me, it rocks. so i suggest the chilean rose-haired tarantula but what ever you do, never...EVER...EVER get an ornamental tree spider.

I have had a rose-hair for about 2 weeks now. She (I think a she) has been fine and only reared up at me once. I have touched her back legs and had her fine with that, and thought I would try putting my hand in to start getting her used to it. I had my hand laying in the cage, palm up, for about 2 seconds when she jumped at my hand. She didn't rear up first or anything, and didn't hurt or bite me. I have been trying to find out why she might have done this, and haven't been able to find any information about it.

Sounds like it is very nervous. It is not being overly aggressive... but definitely not wanting to be interactive. Tarantulas don't actually relish being held, though this type of tarantula is one of the most docile. You may want to check its habitat to see if its comfortable - the temperature and humidty - and see that it has a place for it to retreat like with a piece of driftwood or bark.

I very much enjoy this one, though I'm having a VERY hard time locating someone who still has spiderlings, they're a popular breed apparently! I DO, however, have 2 Sri Lankan ornamentals, and 2 Chilean rose-hairs, though am wanting something with more color to add to the collection... Awesome spider though!

I don't know where you live and if you live outside of Canada, I don't know what are the procedures for exporting T. Here's the website of Tarantula Canada inc.: http://www.tarantulacanada.ca/English/English.htm , there's also, in the States, a breeder named John he imports from Tarantula Canada. I don't know if he has ornamental blues. I found him on youtube and he does very good videos on how to take care of T, species specifiacations, etc. On youtube type in Jon3800 and send him a message. There's also on youtube Tarantulaguy1976, I have never spoken with him but I know that he breeds ornamental blues. Hope this helps.
