I recently found a western box turtle on a street in a development in Albuquerque about 1/2 mile from the Bosque of the Rio Grande. I made a pen outdoors facing east with shade. He is strong and feisty with a very good appetite. I feed him by hand sometimes and I do take care to keep my fingers well back from his beak. He has adjusted well so far. I thought about releasing him but dogs often run free in the Bosque and there are coyotes and skunks as well. If anyone has advice about hibernation outdoors of this type of turtle I would appreciate the input. It can get fairly cold here at night but when the sun is up it is fairly comfortable. Temperatures can dip to the teens. Maybe he should winter indoors.

I have had Pinky for more than seven years now. He is almost 7 ft. long so he is a couple years older and a couple feet longer than the average Snow Corn Snake. I think it is due to the fact that I keep him active. I let him outside to play in the trees and slither along the ground. He is so laid back that I have yet to see him take off at more than a turtle crawl. Also, I make plans to have him visit the serpentarium for a couple months during the spring season so he can meet the lady snakes. We visit the libraries in our county for special events such as today we will be going to a grand opening for the new library branch on the island. This keeps him people friendly. He loves people and water. Oh and he loves chicken! I have fed mice and rats to Pinky for years; sometimes 2 large rats at a feeding. A month or so ago I was cleaning some chicken breasts for a meal and I had Pinky around my neck. Next thing I know, he is munching on a piece. So, I have made his diet staple chicken breast. It works great for both of us. He gets frisky and tries to get out of his cage now and then. But I recognize that he loves attention and just wants to hang out with us, his family. Love is always the key to a good pet, regardless of what kind of pet you have.

This little guy is the most interesting small animal I've ever had. I have crested geckos as my main small animals to breed. And I got the frog on the side because he was so cute I HAD to buy him. Now after having him for over a year he has gotten to the point where I hand feed him. He is now too lazy to hunt the cricket. I shouldn't have even started doing that. As soon as it gets dark. He comes out of his driftwood home and climbs up and sits there and follows me with his eyes and head. He waits for my hand to feed him. Sometimes when I come up to his cage he jumps towards me only to smash himself on the glass with his mouth open and tongue out...kinda reminds me of those animals or creatures you hang up with suction cups on your car window. If I stick my hand in there to get the water bowl he will attack one of my fingers and starts trying to swallow my finger. Lately he's been so berzerk about getting a cricket he keeps rushing way before I actually get my hand in his aquarium and I'm so afraid he's going to hurt himself. So this little guy is so cool with me he will actually chomp on a cricket in my hand. So crazy! I'm trying to find on the web if this is normal behavior but haven't found anything yet.

hello, i live in washington state and i have a ornate box turtle named zoey. i got her a few years back along with 4 others. i was not educated very well on diseases and such things and when the others caught boot fly, i didn't know wat the heck to do. for 2 years i thought they were all dead until one summer i found her baskng in her out door pen. she is very hardy but eats almost nothing but meat(night crallers in particular)and occasionlly a blackberry or two. they are truly wonderful turtles, but make sure it has a large enough pen(28 sq feet minimum).

I live in the interior of British Columbia, Canada and I believe that I am the only person in my town to own a "Rosie". Her name is Hairy Jane, and she has become a family pet now and I am very attached. Last week it completed it molted for the first time in my home. We all thought she was dead, I had picked her up and studied what I thought was a dead spider. luckily I returned her to her home in the same position I had found her. That night I was happy to see that she had only been in the middle of her molting period. It was kinda freaky, but I am happy she is alive!

I am an eleven year old kid and I first obtained my pink toe tarantula at the age of five. The owner before me had the spider for about 5 years so I had a pretty old tarantula. unfortunately she died last month but I am looking to purchase another pink toe, they make great pets. My mom even had fun with sharpie (my spider's name) I have a breeding couple of cornsnakes, 4 baby snakes, and a chilean rose hair tarantula that were all inspired by sharpie. I'd say if your gonna get a pet, pink toe is the way to go!
