This site is just so informative for me. I am doing a project on this fish, and this site gave me all the information that I needed.

I'm writing this in the hopes that I might save the lives of a few innocent fish, as well as save you a sizable sum of money. This is a gorgeous fish. Believe me I had my heart set on keeping one. Unfortunately I ended up killing two in the process. These fish are EXTREMELY prone to Ich (white spot), usually don't tolerate other tangs (especially the powder brown), and don't do well in tanks of less than 180 gallons (they are active and like to roam). If you do decide to buy one, avoid specimens that show ANY signs of stress (they don't usually do very well during collection). Look for vivid blue color, active, coherent, and a thick body. Have the store show you that it is eating. Once home, quarantine if possible. If not possible, these fish benefit from a freshwater dip (match PH and temperature, leave fish in for a minimum of 5 minutes, no more than 10, pull out at first signs of stress). This will help kill any hitchhiking parasites. Drip acclimate slowly and leave the lights off for a few days. Maintain high water quality and offer macro algae (brown seaweed). I know people who have kept them successfully, but they've all had to deal with Ich. If you're prepared to give this fish the care and environment it deserves, be my guest, they're a beautiful addition to a tank. If not, please consider a hardier surgeonfish like the Yellow Tang.

I have yet to meet anyone that has kept this fish for more than a week. And I know several who have tried.

I have nine tangs in my 600 gal aquarium, two of which are orange shoulder tangs. They are the most docile and peaceful fish, very beautiful as well. Both get along exceptionally well, actually they are inseperable. A wonderful fish to keep and watch grow.

we feed all our tangs and angels cos lettuce which you probably know about, but have you tried zuchinni. just blanch it for 5 secs and they will love it. also they love nori (dried seaweed), all the fish do even our big lunar wrasse.

I have two yellow tangs in my salt water aquarium and they are very friendly with other fishes and they are nice to each other too. I wonder why people only prefer algae because I seldom feed them with it and they love to eat other things that rest of the fishes eat like mysis shrimp, pellets, etc. I have also fed them with regular shrimp that we eat and they love it.
So I guess its all about watching and knowing your fishes, because every fish is different.

I have a juvenile tang which is 3-4 inches. At first he wouldn't eat, then after a week of trying everything, he would munch at blanched lettuce, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and julian sprung's purple seaweed. He likes the purple better than the red and green. I just increased the water flow and he is loving it. I've had him for about 4 months and he will eat out of my hand. Really friendly fish. His new favorite food is SPECTRUM THERA+A by new life. It keeps him plump and ick free.

Also, I have a mixture between a reef tank and FOWLR. The only problem I have with my tang is that when he is hungry and I don't feed him or leave some purple seaweed for him, he will bite at the coraline algae. But I purchased purple up and it is making the tank look great by replenishing the areas where he nipped at the rock.
