IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU GAVE HIM FLOATING FOOD. I MELT ALL MY FROZEN FOOD IN A LITTLE JAR THEN I MIX IT UP AND THEN DUMP IT IN. IF THESE FISH GET TOO MUCH AIR IN THEIR LUNGS THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FLOAT UP TO GET AIR AND DROWN.

Man, reading all these great comments I bought 2 pairs of 1" longhorn cowfishes in my 100 gallon aqu. Guess what I wiped out all my fishes and even inverts.
Huge disaster I lost all everything cause these fishes.

    Why did you lose everything?
  • Johnny Interwebs - 2010-07-14
"The answer to a fool is silence".

N.B. You cannot possibly have read the comments, which would have informed you that they

    a) are too big for your tiny tank.

    b) would rapidly eat all the inverts in any tank

    c) leak poison when stressed.

Never put 2 in the same tank they get very stressed out and will kill everything in the tank.

Just bought a small boxfish for my 90 gal. tank. It already contains 5 cardinal fish, two clown fish, a yellow tang, a striped convict tang, two firefish, and a diamond goby. So far, everyone is fine. They all ignore the boxfish, and he is so cute! Knowing his defense mechanism, I think I'll call him Ali (because he floats like a butterfly, and stings like a bee), if he lives for at least the next 2 weeks.

Cowfish will enjoy all kinds of foods including worms, snails, shrimp, various mussels, clams, tunicates, and fish. They are not very picky eaters and will quickly adapt to a variety of prepared aquarium foods and the occasional algae wafer. Flake food is not the best for them; even though they may eat it, puffers will not thrive on it.

They will eat a variety of food but mine prefers mysis shrimp.

These fish emit a toxic slim if stressed that can kill everything in the tank. I know, I watched it happen (beware).

Me too. T_T. Two of my fishes died because of that, including my boxfish.

I bought a tiny one but he got sucked into one of my pumps so bought one about 4", he is awesome and loves attention but he won't stop pecking at my anemone which is most annoying, also only has one horn does anyone know if the second will grow back ?

Depending on how long the one that got broken off is, as a longhorn cowfish gets older its horns will get shorter so they should even out.

I have a porcupine puffer fish named Furby and he is my favorite in the reef tank! He has beautiful iridescent eyes and ALWAYS knows when its feeding time. He has even learned to spit water at us when we don't feed him fast enough! I feed him frozen krill and haven't noticed any problem... but he's also only been with us a few months... I would definitely recommend this fish to anyone who enjoys being entertained! :D

omg, I would love to see your fish do that! hehe. It sounded entertaining already! Man, I can't wait till my husband lets me get salt watered fishes, they're way cooler than fresh water, but yet harder to care for.

I had a very personable Stripey a while ago, and after a long run for him, we got a regular dogface. after he died, we just left the tank without a puffer until 2 days ago-we got another stripey, but on the way home, I could still he was BAD! Sure enough, he ate loads of snails and then plays around with his reflection in the mirror-the mirror thing is something every puffer I ever had liked-but I've never seen a puffer eat 10+snails within 15 minutes!
