Little is known about breeding. They have not been bred in captivity to properly study. The puffer has a lot of defenses against predators so most stay away.

I kept one of these amazing guys for a long time, he was almost a foot long when he died. As far as when he did die he did not release a toxin and was surprised to find out that they release the toxin when they die stressfully. As sad as I was when he did die it made me feel better knowing he was happy and probably died of old age.

Easily the best fish to keep as a pet. During feeding they will swim to you and take food from your hand. Be careful not to be bitten by this one, it has very powerful jaws. It will spit jets of water from the aquarium at you if you dont feed it quick enough. It will also come to the front of the tank and beg for food. The best fish I've ever kept. Recommended to any one who likes a fish with a good personality.

I had a 6 incher not too long ago he was a great fish. Be careful with your water changes!! The puffer i have now is a baby Its doing very well. Its okay to have your water at 80 degrees for these fish. good luck guys.

I have a porcup[ine puffer I bought a week ago now named mugsy. I have been trying to feed him a variety of foods from clam, brine, freeze dried krill, shrimp, and mussels. I haven't seen him eat the food yet. It's gone but I believe that is from my snowflake eel coming out and taking. Any suggestions on what I should try?

Try using tong and feed him directly. Once they start eating its hard to slow them down.

I've had my puffer along with three other fish for a little over a year, and they are all doing great! I found something funny that was kinda weird is that my puffer loves having her picture taken. I was playing around with a digital camera one day and she started getting really excited in her tank so i walked over there and took a picture of her, and she loved it. She is the only fish that responds to this in the tank, and will follow me from one side to the other following the camera. I definitely recommend a puffer they are so friendly and sweet, a great addition to any tank. I have never had a problem with her and the other fish, I have a snowflake eel, a lyretail wrasse, and a maroon clown.

Wow we saw one in myrtle beach @ original Benjamin's it was so weird we didn't know what it was. It had teeth and looked like a dog. So when we came home I looked on the computer and saw what you posted.

puffers, being predatory animals, tend to watch what is going on around them. they are very smart fish. my jeff (yellow belly dog face puffer) gets all excited when he sees me going to the freezer for his food.

I just fell in love with my guy at the pet store yesterday!!! He kept swimming to the side of his tank and practically demanding attention. Plus when I first walked up his stripes were really light and the more I spoke to him the darker his coloring. Today I went back and he acted as if he recognized me. I could not go home without him and he ate a ton of snails and promptly took a nap. BRAT.

I believe it mostly boils down to the specific fish & tank size. My Toby Puffer has been in a 110gal with my dwarf lionfish & blue damsel for a few years. NONE of the fish nip or have any other issues with one another. The smaller the tank, the more territorial fish are going to be, period. The order they are put into the tank can make a difference too. My damsel should be eaten by my lion, but because he was there first she yields to him & his territory. I love these little puffers, they are full of personality, but be careful - mine likes to jump out of the tank any chance he gets.

I have a porcupine puffer his name is Spike. I love it they are fun and very social I feed mine krill and garlic. It helps build their immune system to help them from getting ick and keeps them healthy. It has eaten one of my blue led crabs they are cheap and it helps with their teeth. I enjoy that mine gets along with everything in my tank and only eats a crab every once in a while great fish. It is like a puppy for the tank

We have a new porcupine-puffer, Mr. Spikey, and we are wondering how much he should be fed? It seems he will eat and eta, but since he is such a messy eater, I'm worried about our tank - although five days in, all the levels are okay. We have Krill, Bloodfish and Flakes (for the Damsels-2). He will eat the Krill and the Flake, not such a fan of Bloodfish! So, how much Krill should he get? Thanks!!

In general, you should feed him about as much as he can eat in 5 minutes once or twice per day. It is pretty easy to overfeed, especially in marine aquariums and with fish that love to eat all you can give them! Feeding more often usually entails more frequent water changes which is fine if you don't mind doing it. It sounds like you have a great fish... enjoy!
