Heniochus black/white/yellow bannerfish/ butterflys elongated dorsal fin is losing the filament. Gray patches on banner. Fish not as active today and did not eat. Checked ammonia, nitrate, phosforus. All normal. I do 5 gallon water changes on 75 gal every other day. The fin still has half of the filament on and the other half is just a thin bare thread.

Hi, did your heniochus recovered from its dorsal fin infection? if so what tretreatment did you use? hope you reply and the fish is well.

Hi im having a similar problem and was wondering if he recovered? If so what treatment did you use? I hope you reply soon thanks.

This sound like a bacterial infection, like Tail and Fin Rot, which besides having disintegrating fins, can also show up with gray patches on the skin.

Probably a bacterial infection. Make sure all your filtration is running smoothly and do daily 20% water changes until it clears up. Best of luck to your fish!

Remember: these fish are NOT moorish idols!!! I've never had these fish but I purchased a moorish idol (very similar looking fish) a month ago. They are EXTREMELY difficult! I've managed to keep him alive after 2 weeks of not eating, ick, and stress problems from my hawkfish. He is finally looking better but not worth the risk, not to mention these are half the price of moorish idols and MUCH easier to keep alive.

I purchased a CBB.. When I added it to my tank, my yellow tang chased it constantly. I ended up taking it out and placing it in another tank. I plan on getting an in tank quarantine box so I can place it in my main tank to protect the CBB. That way my yellow tang will get used to seeing it before I let it loose again. I hope it works.

What a wonderful fish! (I'm envious, it's true) Those darn yellow tangs love to go after anything they think is a 'yellow' competitor. I think that may be what's happening. Good idea to quarantine (maybe move the tang into a quarantine, re-arrange the tank, then move it back). A great way to help disrupt established ideas of what home is, and get fish to re-evaluate their place in the environment...lol

All i got to say is there's more to 'em than meets the eye! this fish turned out to be very curious and energetic. Unlike other butterflyfish we've had, it ate heartily and aggressively with our clown and damsels and didn't swim away when I get up close to the glass. He's not as pretty as other butterflyfish, but this fish is a joy to own. Can I send in my own pictures fo this fish? I got a cute one!

I saw one of these beautiful little while guys snorkeling today. I live in northern N.S.W, but they are along most of the Australian east coast. Extremely shy fish.

how lucky can you be? I caught a gorgeous gussy at The Heads Knysna (month January 2007). No problem with teaching it to eat. Also a handnet and snorkel and goggles. Thank you. EUGENE

i think people should buy butterflyfish at an adult size such as copperband falculas, collareds, and raccoons. at that size they will be easyer to keep due to their being darker in colour, fatter, tuffer, easier to feed, and bigger to look at.

Linnea Rainford - 2007-03-05
Hello,

My name is Linnea Rainford (just like the fish!). When I first heard about this fish, I was amazed! It seems that not only is my last name the name of a town in England (The Town of Rainford), and the Rainford University, but now a fish too! This fish is an absolutely fascinating subject. I have a huge love for pet fish, and am the very proud owner of several freshwater fish tanks. Being only 15 years old, I'm not exactly rich, but I would love to start a salt-water fish tank. I will be very happy if I can find a petstore (in Ontario) where I could start a saltwater tank for cheap.
Thank-you,
Linnea.

Linnea, my name is Julio Mendez. I live very far from Ontario. Miramar Fl. I have been doing this 20+ years dont know if you ever set up your saltwater tank. But if you did butterflys they arer very challenging fish. I personally like them just because of that challenge. But anyway when it comes to butterflys make sure to see the fish eating before purchasing.
