This is my favorite butterflyfish. Even though I am an expert marine aquarist, I still like to keep them.

We got the fish yesterday and he immediately started eating the mysis. He seems to get along well with the other tank mates and he's picking at algae all day long. He only dives into the rocks when he feels threatened. Otherwise he's out in the open all day.

Can I feed fresh water feeders to a lion fish?

Hypothetically, yes. However, the fresh water feeder fish will endure great stress before they are eaten, as they are fresh water, and not salt water. I would not recommend the act.

Hi Everyone. I bought a Black Ribbon Eel about a year ago and it is doing just fine. It didnt eat for about two months at first, then decided it liked my fire gobies. Now I feed mollies or any other live fish. I recently got a blue ribbon eel that I added to my tank. They are best of friends and the blue eel started feeding within the 1st two weeks. The strangest thing has happened though, the Blue ribbon has now changed color and has turned black. Now that is freaky...

I purchased a Blue Ribbon eel,3 weeks ago.He has been eating Rosies and guppys, but not to many, and refuses to eat except one or two days each week,so far.I noticed that after a few days,it's bright blue, turned more, toward black as well.Since it was fairly new to the aquarium.I assumed it was a sign of stress.I have a Niger Trigger, that competes with it for live food(but they interact very well.any other ideas why it has lost it's bright blue colour.I am a bit concerned.

Sigh of relief! I got 2 females yesterday. After acclimating them I released them in the tank. One was fairly calm and exploring a little bit and the other darted straight to the bottom and kicked up a cloud of rubble. Poof! Smoke bomb! It settled quickly and she had disappeared. There is shelter in my tank but nothing I can't see into except for a giant moon snail shell. I thought maybe she's in there and I left it be. Came back an hour later and the other was gone. I have a good lid but I looked all over the floor anyway. This morning I checked the shell and nothing. These fish are ninjas! I was searching this morning to see if anyone else had this problem and found this. I feel better about life now.

These fish are incredible about disappearing for days at a time.  Once they feel safe and get use to the take you will start seeing them more and the they will disappear again!  Have fun solving the mystery!

How can you tell the sex of a bamboo cat shark?

It's really easy. If the shark has claspers (two penis like structures by the anal fin) it is a male. If the claspers are not present you have a female.
  • elizabeth cox - 2012-10-08
Are the claspers really noticable right at birth or does it take a couple of months?  My little one won't stay still long enough for me to peek when it's swimming and I don't want to freak it out by holding it still to look

I've seen some as far south as Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I haven't been diving much further south so can not verify that they don't live past there.

Feed all kinds of large meaty foods like small pieces of fish, squid, shrimp, and live goldfish. Best to feed small amounts several times a day.

Get long pair of hemostats and get feeder guppies, pinch on tail. Let the feeder fish flutter right underneath sharks mouth. It took me 3 days to get mine going but I worked with it 3 or 4 times a day. Keep trying, don't give up. It will live up to 2 weeks off of its fat built up off of the egg, but needs to eat.
  • jose - 2011-05-13
Thanks Jade, apreciate the feedback. Today is my fifth day of trying and still no result. Already tryed silversides, goldfish and drops of garlic xtrime. First thing tomorrow get some guppies!!!
  • bill - 2011-05-21
Yes, it is hard but what would be even more difficult would be to lose your investment. I just lost one of mine by failing to change filters. Take extra time and effort. You will have fun with results.
  • jose - 2011-05-21
That's correct Bill, thanks for the comment. Two days ago the shark is finally eating but very small amount of food, so far so good!!!

I just came home with my spouse and took a looked in the 50 gallon breeder tank, and we found our two scooter blennies mating! What a suprise! As soon as we walked up to the tank though, they separated quicker than an 85 year old at the slot machine. After they separated we saw the eggs or sperm sacks, whatever they were. We don't know, does anyone have an answer for me? Are they egg layers or live birth fish? We have a 3 stripped damsel, Yellow tailed damesel, a yellow tang and a zebra tang, 3 turbo snails and 4 hermits and a sally light foot. Will all the rest eat the eggs if the scooters lay eggs? Thank you very much

My scooter blennie is not eating and it's not moving around like it used too and I think he will die. The tank has some algea on the glass and red stuff on the heater what should I do.

Hope this helps! 95 gallon Corner Bow front Reef tank.

Now the question is..... how can I add a friend, determine the sex, and or figure out how to find the mate for him? Any suggestions and I don't have anemone because I'm afraid it will sting my Coral. Any Comments greatly appreciated!

If you want to determine the sex add another clownfish to the tank, the same species as the one you already have. All clowns are born male but when they find another clown or group of clowns the biggest becomes the female and she will mate then when she dies the next biggest clown becomes female etc etc.
  • aelun - 2011-06-12
The captive anemone will only sting or attack if it is stressed, scared, feels threatened, or if you haven't fed it for a long time.
  • alice - 2012-04-17
Anamone fish can live up to 18 years.
  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-04-18
In a well fed and with pristine conditions this should be an issue.
  • Bill Vasalofsky - 2012-09-30
This is advice is generally good for any clown fish. If you put two of them in the same tank and they are any where close to the same side, then one will kill the other. If you put a really small one in with a really big one, then eventually when the small one sexually matures it will become the male, and the big one will become the female. There's a little wiggling dance that they will do when the change is taking place. When you add an anemone to the tank with a Maroon, or any clown fish, they get super hyper. This is probably when they are most aggressive against other fish who are not clowns.
