I live in Alberta Canada and have a 6 year old quarter horse. I have a question. I've been told my horse wont grow a winter coat if I put a blanket on her. Is this true? Thanks love your site.

I don't think so. I lived in Flordia and had 3 miniatures and it doesn't get cold in Florida and they grew a winter coat. Seasonal growing a winter coat and shedding has to do with time of year for most animals. A cat or dog, living in a home in Florida will still grow a winter coat and shed the winter coat. Birds will aquire a winter coat (or down) even while in the home and never outside. It is cold up there in Alberta, beautiful but it gets cold. Nature takes care of its own in many ways and the winter (heavier) growth is just a part of that.

Since you live in a fairly cool climate your horse (like most breeds) should grow a winter coat even with a blanket because it is a natural thing for them to do. But the older a horse gets, sometimes not always, the horse will have trouble growing a winter coat. That is when you should look for a type of pellet food that will help with fur growing.

I have a 10 yo QH mare, bought her last summer and no, she doesn't grow a winter coat. I don't know if it's the breed or simply due to the fact that every since she was 3 she was blanketed...

When I was young, I wanted a horse in the worts way and my dad kept saying no as there was no place to put him. I thought if I cleaned out the garage really good, then I could put it in the garage. Dad still said "NO" Anyhow got a little older and rode all the time - someone elses horses but I didn't have to clean the garage again either.

I've had a fjord pony for 10 months now and he's the best thing in my life! He's so amusing, so affectionate loves to be entertained and a great mixer with his peers! As long as he can go out grazing daily and riden regularly he's the happiest horse ever! I love fjord ponies and would recommend them to anyone

We have an opportunity to adopt a 2yr old gelded stallion tb. He's beautiful and seems sweet. Will he be a good pet? We're not planning to ride very often. Is there a tremendous amount of medical and grooming care required?

Aww good I'm getting a thoroughbred in a couple months any down sides?
  • Hannah - 2011-06-13
Do the 'Thoroughbreds" have to be race horses? I would prefer to just go rising on trails, that sort of thing. And is it possible to get the Appaloosa color in a Thoroughbred? I heard that they do come in that color. But I am not sure? Thanks.

Thoroughbreds don't have to race to be happy and love you. I would imagine most don't just beautiful to appreciate and ride.

I wish I had a horse you are so lucky.

I love horses and I am interested in jumping. Do you think this is a good breed?

Quarter horses are good horses overall, as far as the breed goes! As far as jumping, it depends more on the particular horse than the breed as to whether they would be a good jumper or not. Some quarter horses are good at jumping, and some are not. It depends a lot on their build and skills/abilities. You may want to try him/her out first.
  • Olivia - 2011-11-10
Quarter horses are the best breed I have been around. Jumping though is a little bit different. It does depend on the horse and another thing, check the hind quarters if they look big and muscular (so should the shoulders and legs) the horse would probably be great for jumping.

This is a great website i told all my friends about it and i found a great mustang want and I want to get him out of where he is right now because the people that own him are sick so they take HORRIBLE care of them their legs are caked in mud but now that I know that they can live off little feed I think they will be ok until I can get him. I will be looking at every breed there is on this website!

Glad you like the site and welcome aboard. If the horses you saw are full bodied and well fed, maybe it rained and just felt like going into the mud for coolness. They will do that. If they look sucken and not fed - that is scary. Maybe tell parents or another horse lover. I had two white Pyrenes and whenit would rain - they would roll around in the mud - I believe just to annoy me. They would be covered in mud. Then they would stand there and just let the rain pound down on them and they would be pure white again. It was like some sort of ritual. Of course if the rain stopped before they were done, I'd use the hose.
