How old does a mare have to be so you can breed her? Someone told me you can breed a mare/filly at ONE(!!!) year-old. This sounds cruel. But if it is true could someone please tell me? Also, would breeding a (healthy) light 15 hand high horse to a 17 hand high + stallion produce a to-large foal for the horse to give birth to? Thanks for all replies.

A mare can come into season as early as a year old but usually two. It is risky to breed her at that young an age as they are not completely grown and developed untill the age of 4 or 5 so it is not recommended that you breed a mare before the age of 4 or 5. The hand high size of the male versus the female is not the only consideration when determining a mate. If the female and male are the same build, slender, full grown it is probably find. However, if you are breeding a heavy large boned sturdy male at 17 HH+ with a slender fine bones female at 15 HH, it is probably risky. So it isn't just how many Hands High, it is the build - the breed.

Hi, my name is Quinn and I'm 13yrs old.
My mom and I are looking to buy a Quarter Horse at a livestock auction and I would like to know if there is a way to quickly tell
(without a ruler) how many hands tall a horse is. Also, I am 5 ft 1, how many hands tall would that be?

15 hands high is 60 inches so that is just 1 inche shorter than you are. It is 4 inches to the hand so if a horse is 60 inches high - it is 15 hands high. If it is 18 hands high than it is 72 inches high. 4 inches to the hand. OK. Good luck and have ever so much fun.

Wow this is helpful!! I own a spanish mustang but i bought him at 7 yr so he was used to people although untrained (now he's trained jumper, by me). I'm planning on getting him a companion to train and do Extreme Mustang Makeover with :) I found the bits on feeding REALLY helpful!!!

I just got my first Fjord a few weeks ago, she is 23 and one of the most foward and powerful horses I have ever owned, yet she is graceful and light on her feet. She is very intelligent, sweet, kind, and a bit willful, but she makes riding so fun! I wish I had a Fjord years ago. I was mis-informed 25+ years ago that they weren't very nice horses....I should have checked around with other owners after that comment, I feel I've missed out all these years of having these wonderful horses. I am very grateful I have one now! I will own this breed the rest of my life, I couldn't be happier.

My 12 year old Friesian gelding has developed a shoe boil on his upper front leg. I have a shoe boil boot for him, but it is too small and does not protect the swollen area. Are there any larger sized rings or any suggestions on how to better protect it? He is on anti inflamatory paste and topical cream and shoe fits properly.

Yes, there are different sizes and makes of a shoe boil. Actually different types so one of them should work. I am not familar with the procedue so just looked up different makes with phots. If you go to this link, it will show you the different types and if you cliock on the photo, it will tellyou the manufacturer. Hope this helps Shoe Boil
