What is a large person? I was considering a Connamara for a 20 year old college student weighing in at 200.no body fat real looker for competition dressage and jumping is the pony a bad idea?

Some people say the rule of thumb maximum weight for ponies in general is 20% of the horses weight, others say 30%. The Connemara Pony is one of the more sturdy breeds, and known to be able to carry much more weight than most other pony breeds. But it is still a small horse. I would suggest looking for a light horse breed that excels in those two disciplines, then you won't have to worry.

I just bought a 7 year old Iberian sporthorse gelding. I have only had him for two weeks, and we are already falling in love. I have never met a breed with such a keen, curious, attentive and loyal temperment. He is incredible.

I think WBs are slightly better jumpers but they both make good all rounders. This is just from my own experiences though...

If I understand the info correctly the throughbreds are bred from defined warmbloods for specific sport whether racing or jumping so I would go on the basis of what the actual pony is bred for. Thoughbreds are normally bred for a sport. All rounders in handling riding personality is dependent on ancestry and breeding. Easier to judge by the parental linage. Hope this helps.

I am not sure on on who might be the better jumper but I now my throughbred trusts me and he would jump any thing I would ask him to and he would cross any river. I would hope I would know his limits.

this is my opinion is that wb are better at show jumping and tbs are better at rounder

TBs are often crossed with Irish Draughts to make Irish Sport Horses which are excellent all rounders and fantastic jumpers.

I had to look it up but the info I found said between 25 and 40 years. I have no idea what they say the life expectancy of a human is - but let's say 80. There are many humans that life to 90 or 97 or evenover 100 - so an average or a guess is just that - a best guess so just enjoy him and don't worry about it.

Many years ago, I read an old western book and it talked about a spotted stallion that they could never capture. It was very smart and cunning, and had a gait it travelled for miles and never tiring. In the mid-90's, I came across a man of indian background in southeastern British Columbia who had a gaited appaloosa. I own a 23 year old gaited morgan mare whom I spent many years on trailrides and packtrips in the mountains. The gait is short-strided and easy on my hips. Does anyone know of gaited appaloosa's or what bloodlines may carry that trait? Morgans were disposed of in the horse show world if they possessed that gait in eastern USA,but it is a gait that can be rode for miles and miles. I have seen 1 gaited appaloosa recently and am interested in one in the future. Thank you. Cora

The ancestry of the original Appaloosa horses goes back to Spanish horses brought here by the Conquistadors (16th century). The Appaloosa was then crossed with Spanish bred Paso Fino horses, which resulted in a gaited stock horse. This is a smooth running type of gait that the breeders called the 'Indian Shuffle', and is only found in the old foundation lines of Appaloosas.

The original Appaloosa genetic pool has been greatly diluted, resulting in very few gaited Appaloosa's. There are said to be some dedicated Appaloosa breeders that are trying to revitalize their foundation genetics. So if you could locate one of these breeders, there could be a possiblity of finding an Appaloosa with this gait.

Hi, can someone give me some input on feeding of fyord horse, located in florida, how much food does it need .. really....... it gets no grazing and only gets minimal hay, one to two flakes coastal hay, bored to death, only gets 1/4 of scoop twice a day. very depressed horse......

Sounds like he needs a job, put him to work. Horses do not make good lawn ornaments. It is your job as a responsible horse owner to keep him fit, which means exercise, which in turn will stimulate his mind.

I own a Polish Arabian and he is now white. He is 13 years old and I have owned him since he was 5 years old and only 90 days into training. I have been around horses all my life. After getting my daughters old enough, I was finally able to start riding again in my forties. Faress is the arabians name, yes in the beginning I hit the ground a lot and often. Never was I thrown, but he did spook a lot. Took me awhile to get my seat back since we were learning dressage together. I can only tell you that the bond we share is like no other. He is the smartest horse I have ever owned. He can learn a trick in one day. He and I sleep together in his stall. He is loyal like no other horse. So all of you who do not like Arabians probably couldn't ride one because they are not for the green rider. Nor the chicken hearted. You treat them well and with kindness, they will love you forever. I also own a Warmblood. He is beautiful and big and great at dressage and I love him. I can only say the Arab is the most loving horse I have ever owned. When you lie down in his stall on a blanket and you wake up and he is lying next to you, you know this is the greatest bond ever.

i have an all white polish arabian thats a rescue. he is 18, and he is the best horse. maximus is the best horse i ever owned, he is so eager to learn. he even plays hide and go seek with me! lol

Hi Lorna, I read your comment I myself came across the arabian by pure accident and now my children ride arabians. I couldn't agree more with you what you wrote was true, correct and beautiful.Yes it is true people who do not like the arabians do not understand their Beauty, Loyalty and Charm. All I can say they have a lot to learn about horses.

How can a saddlebred be a wild horse if some one owns it, or is it just not trained? I happened to have a saddlebred-quarter horse last year and he is amazing but do you know if there would be a difference in the way he walks? hope you reply!

Just got my first halflinger. She's about 20 and is in a devent size pen with 5 other halflingers. They are all young and bully her. She is sweet and don't defend herself. I'm picking her up tomorrow and she will be all alone. Will she be unhappy being alone or will she be happy not getting picked on?

American Shetland ponies are completly different from Shetland ponies, they are now catagorised as a seperate breed and i can tell you, as a shetland pony breeder (from shetland) american shetland ponies are not even close to ours anymore!
