My friend had a mastiff they named 'Hooch' but had to give him away because they had to move to a rental. I have seen mastiffs around and
I love them; they're very theraputic and gentle. I only wish my friend would get another one for the rental they're in because they take care of my autistic daughter who LOVES mastiffs and all even-tempered dogs.

I have grown up with English Mastiffs my entire life and they are by far my favorite! I have a 19 month old that is lean and in good health minus the hip dysplasia that seems to be getting worse over the past two weeks. I cannot afford to have the surgery done since it seems to have started in front and back, does anyone recommend anything I can do as he is the best dog and way too cute!

High quality foods, keep it weight down, and there are many supplements that can be added to their food.

I reccommend you use glucosamine chondroitin. These can be bought at any walmart and should run 30 bucks for a3 month supply. They help rebuild cartilidge in joints and relieve pain. I had a 196 pound rottweiler who would cry due to pain sitting down. With these pills he stopped. The vet has other pills, but this is cheap and effective. Good luck and talk to vet if dog is on other meds.

Please look into water therapy! It has had fantastic results with other breeds. Dogs who were unable to walk are running again! Strengthening the muscles around the joints without weight dependancy is the key!

Rottweilers are mostly not scary and dangerous if treated properly. I have a female rottie who is about 3 years old. Rottweilers are good pets when treated properly.

I have an English Mastiff named Rollo. He is in perfect health and temperament. When I purchased him the owners were to provide me with his family history but failed to do so and is no longer around. What would the steps be to get him to be the first family line. Is there special things to do with the English Mastiff Association? Thanks.

We breed English mastiffs and it's our belief that a mastiff is the most rewarding and satisfying canine to have around. Check us out to find out more www.kinghillmastiffs.com

I bought a rottweiler puppy recently and it's fully black. My friends told me it's not pure because rottweiler should have two colors. Can someone help me with it? Also can you list some features to identify a pure puppy.

Yes generally as far as I know you can't get a fully black rottweiler. Did your rottweiler come with papers? That is the only true way to know for sure if your puppy is a mix or not.

I have been told fairly consistently to not breed a female dog until it's second heat - which is usually around a year old.

You should until she is at least 2 years of age, to be fully developed and mature enough (mentally also)for motherhood. Of course, she shall only be bred after passing hip and elbow exam. Not to mention if she has correct temperament and only to a sire that has the same and compliments her look.

Almost. They come in black but with usually some tannish red around their feet and undersides.

I got a dog about 6 months ago, it's small and a mixed breed. He is sharpai, german sheperd, and great dane. I'm going crazy because I can't get him to stop chewing on every thing and stealing too. And I can't seem to find a dry dog food he will eat. Can you please help me.

Chewing is a natural behavior in puppies, but in adults its could be related to any number of things. It could be that he doesn't know what's acceptable to chew on, could be bored, or may have some type of a separation anxiety or fear related anxiety. Maybe he craves more attention or possibly you haven't established yourself as the 'pack leader'yet providing enough discipline and guidance. There's a bunch of different things you can try like increasing interactive time, providing specific toys for him, and setting acceptable rules. You may want to consult a behavior professional. The food could be related to the same problem, but its a good idea to have him checked by a veterinarian to make sure he's healthy.

I want to get a Rottweiler but I am afraid of how much it sheds and if I train it as a guard dog will it attack non bad people?!?!

A Rottweiller really doesn't shed a lot and its hair is very very short.  Easy to keep clean without odor.  However, they are a little stubborn when it comes to training.  Treats are great and  playing/training is good.  Example you are both running inthe yard and you yell 'STOP' and you both 'STOP' or 'SIT' and you both 'SIT' because as pups they have a big amount of energy.  You don't have to train a Rottweiller to be a guard.  The Rottweiller will love you, your family, people you allow in your home etc.  They should be well socialized to be around all people with you.  Take them to town and walk around, let people pet him etc.  The more socialized the better.  As for guard - anyone who does not know your pup - is not going to go near your pup just cuz Rottweiller so automatically a guard dog.  They also know what is their territory and will stand guard.  But socialize him well to as many people as possible.
