My Chi is 1 yr today. I worry so much about two things; the awful whooping sound in his throat, I've heard its a backward sneeze--- and the second is that he is kinda skinny. He eats great. I feed him Royal canine for chis. He is very active, plays with his toys and does not act sick. He is a long haired, we love him so much and he is so very potty trained, never in the house. One last thing are there any shampoos that fleas don't like??

Many write in about their Chihauhau having sneezes or odd sounds and most reply that they have allergies - a lot of them. Your little guy sounds fine with the playing, eating and activity so I'd just assume allergies. Many suggest a different food but you are already on food for Chis - but possibly.....

My chi has a softer trachea that tends to flatten and it makes a sound like that, especially if she's been sleeping on it. Just be sure you are sensitive with the throat, only put him in a harness. And dont give him rawhide, just nylon bones. As for food, I feed my dog Rachel Rays Chicken and Rice and my dog is def healthy looking. And as for fleas, I would say daily use of a flea comb is better than any shampoo for fleas. Chis really shouldn't have any chemicals around them at all.

My vet confirmed the backward sneezing. Sometimes my lil girl gets freaked out by it so I just talk to her and stroke her fur til she's done. Also if she starts to do it frequently I will give her a 1/4 teaspoon of clear children's benadryl. This will clear up the sneezing for a while.

I have four long hair chis. Mom, pop, and two cute little babies. I rescued the mom and dad from a home where the man had over 20 dogs. They were in very bad shape when I first saw them. The fleas were everywhere and they had been scratching so much that they had sores all over them. I brought them home and ran them into the tub where I used Dawn dish soap on them. It killed every single flea on contact and didn't harm the dogs at all. I have had them two years now and this past January the female gave birth to three puppies. One only lived for four days; not sure what happened. I think she smothered it one night. The other two have had their full round of shots and are doing great. We are crate training them. It is a little tough but I think they are getting the hang of it. We have an accident every now and then. The male, Dodger, is black with tan marks on his face and white paws. He is my boy. He loves going for rides in the car and barks at everything. He is always by my side and is very loyal. The mom, Sissy, has a mind and attitude all her own. She is a sweet girl but strangers beware. We don't have company come over much anymore because she rules the house. They are very playful but they do not like it when my 10 year old runs through the house. She will go after him yapping the whole way. They both hate the door bell. We have to sprint to get to them and put them away when someone comes over. We are attempting to socialize the puppies though. When people come over we bring them out and put mom and dad away. We let other people pet and hold them. They, especially Dodger, are like babies. He always wants to be right on my lap or laying right next to me. He is my buddy.

I took my long haired chihuahua to the vet for this same problem, because I too was worried. He assured me it was due to a soft trachea. He checked her and said it was not a problem at this point, and he would check her each year.

My 3 year old is pregnant. Getting worried about the birth with the take that the birth sometimes needs assistance from vet. What would I do if cannot get to vet and it looks like she is having trouble.

I would sure take her to the vet before she is ready to give birth and talk to the vet. Many times little chis need assistance - actually surgery as they are so small they can not deliver naturally. You and your vet can discuss what options there are.

So I have a 1yr old long haired chi and I was wondering if trimming his hair( with clippers) just on his body and leave his head and tail alone; if it would grow back? So could you give me advice because summer is coming and we go camping alot. Thank you so much for your time and help:):)

Yes, the fur will grow back. People clip their chis allthe time.

If she won't eat or drink anything then I would get her to the vet as soon as possible as there could be an obstruction from something she swallowed. However, if she is eating just a little piece of toast for breakfast and a little bite of sandwich and a little sip of milk etc - these guys are very tiny and that stuff is so much better than dog food and water. Then she is eating - If she is not eating anything - get her to the vet.

I have a male chihuahua who is also a fussy eater. A lot of times he gets tired of his dog food so I frequently switch to other brands. When he gets tired of dog food, I'd boil chicken breast with a little salt. He loves it!

My dog Nico is 15 months and also is a fussy eater. Too many tricks deter him from his food. But when hungry he will eat. Make sure you have lots of water - they drink a lot.

My husband and I are parents to two short-haired chi, a male and female. The male chi-'Bass' is small weighing only 3 pounds while the female, 'Pearl' weighs 6lbs. They are loveable dogs and are very loyal. At night when I have to get up to go to the bathroom, Pearl wakes up and goes with me. They are with me wherever I go. The male dog sleeps with us while the female sleeps under our bed. We bought a male long-haired pup recently to complete our pack. I love these small dogs and won't settle for any other breed.

I just adopted a Chihuahua, and I think she's long haired. She weights about 13 lbs. I think she is also dachsuand. She is the sweetest thing and loves to sleep with me in my arms all night and under the blankets.
Because I got her at a shelter she was used to being in a room for 14-16 hours a day before going potty out side. I can't get her to go outside at all and when she goes, she goes inside the house. Any advice?

That is hard - cuz not really housebroke. Try the wee wee pads - many people swear by them and say they work terrific. Your little one is in a crate or in a room or whatever and just place the wee wee pads there. Place a wee wee pad by the door - where you go out taking her for a walk. When she goes potty on the wee wee pad - take the pad and place it outside. If she goes somewhere in the home - try and clean it up with a wee wee pad and take it outside. What we are trying to do is take her scent from potty and place it outside so she starts to understand it is safe and OK to go potty outside.

I am wanting to get a small dog within the next few months. I am researching to make sure I will get the right breed for us. The dog will be left alone while we are at work (7:30am-5:30pm). Will this breed be suitable? Or if you know of other small breeds that would not mind being left alone during the day please let me know.

I own a longhair chihuahua and she just sleeps while I'm gone. She's totally fine as long as you're ready to play when you get home. She was easy to indoor potty train as well.

I have a long haired Chihuahua and I love him. The only thing is that they do shed a little bit so there is fuzzy to sweet or vacuum. The other thing is also their behind. You may have to spray water to clean it. It depends more on what you feed them. He snorts when he is happy like a little pig which is very cute. He is very potty trained and yeah they do tend to sleep when one is gone. They also love their toys. Get them a stuff animal toy that you can press to make noises.

Hello I have a 2 year old hairless Chinese crested male dog which is 17 lbs. and has taken to not wanting to eat. He has lost most of his teeth now and so kibble is out of the question. He won't touch canned dog food and I have wasted a lot of money on making food that he won't touch either. I'm pulling my hair out. My opinion the vet isn't sure what to give him either. He went from having a great appetite to eating very little and he needs to see me eat it first or he won't touch it and I'm not eating dog food sorry. Please give me some suggestions cause he's only eating meat that's it.

Wild dogs/wolves hunt and they hunt for meat. That is their mainstay and they do quite well. If your little fella only wants to eat meat then let him. I'd just cook up some hamberger (or ground turkey)for him. That way you can taste it (or pretend to) and he can eat it. If you wish - a little yogurt over the top or mixed in won't hurt at all. At 17 years old - I think he should have his own way.

3 or 4. My aunt had a male shih tzu and a female bichon frise and they had 4 puppies. One died.

Seriously? Come on now intertwining breeds is very very wrong!
They are a breed in their own for a reason. Breeding these animals like that is against all us shih tzu lovers policies.
