I would switch food as possibility the food doesn't agree with him. I'd watch him eat as sometimes the eat so fast - the wind up throwing up. Feed him a little amount at a time and put a little yogurt on it to help settle stomach. If this doesn't work, I'd take him to the vet as I would be concerned about an obstruction. If he is active, playing and poop is normal then I would just think he is eating the food way too fast. Possibly holding off eating to make sure he is not going to get something better like toast or a cookie and if he doesn't get his little treats, he just wolfs down the food which causes him to throw up.
Good luck - little yogurt on the food - or broth might be a good thing.

I have a female Applehead and she got caught by a 4 month old Chihuahua cross pom. I'm so scared if she will be able to deliver the pups ... can any one give me advice??

I would definitely talk to your vet as soon as possible. These little Appleheads frequently can not deliver naturally and a Pom/cross, even with another Chihuahua, might be hard for her. I'd see your vet right away.

I live in pa, my dog tego is always chewing himself. Any help with skin problems. The vet wants 700 to test for allergies and @ 700 if he is for the 1st shots. That is air and food allergies both. Please help if you can. I give him 1/2 children benadryl when it gets real bad.

Change your dogs diet try a food called Natural Balance it has limited ingredients and don't give him nothing else, also stay away from chicken ingredients I have a rottie has skin problems it worked.
  • shelley - 2010-11-27
Ther is a website called they sell a herbal medicine that I have my chihuahua on for skin problems which can run in blue chihuahuas try it.
  • Sharyl - 2011-01-22
It's probably food or flee allergies..My dog only get Natural Balance (by Vandyke) Fish and Sweet potato (Petco has it)..I tried chicken and beef and that really made it bad (all the hormones and crap they put in the dog food) and in the spring she only need 1 flee treatment and she's good. It take a while for it to clear up. but I bathe her in a Tea Tree shampoo to calm the skin.

Our 3 year old long hair female chihuhua Precious, has brought nothing but pure joy in our lives. My wife, Ella, and I are retired and just love her so much.
She is very smart. She is strickly a house dog except when we go for a daily walk. She is not a barker like some small dogs. She is friendly with strangers but rather stay close to my wife. She really knows how to share her love. During the day light hours she would rather go for walk with me or ride in my pickup truck. But, at night she is moma's girl. At our age we are blessed to have her.

I just bought a chihuahua a 9 wk. old. The first thing I noticed about her is that she was chewing on herself all the time. Two days later I went to Pet Smart and bought some shampoo for dogs that have sensitive skin (has oatmeal in it) and I bathed her in it. She instantly stopped!! And here I thought there was some kind of allergy problem and was going to have to put her on some kind of med. I'm so glad I tried that first!

Try feeding him a food called natural balance get it at pet co it has limited ingredience or a product called skin e z on the internet
  • Suzanne - 2012-01-16
You could try a food, like Solid Gold for small dogs (pink bag). It has ingredients that are good for allergic dogs: no corn or wheat, etc. They sell it at Petco, but you can find it a little cheaper online. It is expensive, but you just feed it twice a day, dry, by weight.

My Yorkie also has allergies. Check with your vet to see if he will give you a prescription for Simplicef. The cost is fairly reasonable and it works really well for my dog.

I've grown up with Chihuahuas. I got my first one about 4 years ago and since that shes had two liters of pups. My dad kept one of the first ones. He was a long hair and we all loved him very much. Just last friday he got hit and dad is so upset over it so we're trying to get a male long hair to breed with Misty, my dog. Wish me luck

I have a one year old Japanese Chin that gives me lots of love and laughter. She loves her toys and plays a lot. Only problem with her is I can't find food that she likes and eats. BY HERSELF. I gave her and still do wet food and if I sit and hand feed her she will eat most of it. If I am with her and put hard food on the floor (not in a dish) she will play around eating it. I really need help as I am afraid she will get sick. What kind of food should I give her or as some tell me let her go a day or two and she will eat but that is so hard to do. She likes her doggy treats and bones but only gets 2 little bones a day and 2 treats a day. Any ideas I'd appreciate.

OK been there and done that. I had two Great Pyrenes (two sisters) one named Sugar and one named Shack. I got them when they were about 3 months old. Well Sugar ate just fine but Shack just wouldn't eat unless I sat in the floor and fed her. Sugar weighed more and would gobble everything down and Shack and I would still be sitting on the floor while I fed Shack. Great Pyrenes are not small. After many weeks, I am now sitting on the floor after mixing in hot dogs, soup, ground meat etc into Shacks food to get her to eat because she was 15 pounds lighter than Sugar but weighed 60 pounds, I am still feeding Shack by hand sitting on the floor. My daughter finally says "Mom, are you nuts?" I taught the dog to not eat unless I hand fed her or improved whatever her diet was via soup, hotdogs, broth, hamberger etc. Now why she did not weigh as much as Sugar, I don't know. Possibly she got bored cuz it took me so long to feed her. I do know I did stop and it took a couple of days of Shack begging and me being firm before Shack finally ate on her own without problems. She caught up to Sugar in weight. Thank goodness because they weighed about 100 pounds apiece. Now a Japanese Chin is a little fella and I am sure you are worried but possibly he has you trained like mine trained me. Enjoy and they can always make you laugh. Good luck.

My Jap Chin loves Iams small bites. I think its in a blue bag. He even eats the cats food.

First of all, an hungry dog is an healthy dog. So, I'm suggesting to cut off all treats, these 6 lb dogs can not eat too much a day, and do not hand feed, every meal give a little more than quarter cup with high quality food, 2 meals a day. At first few days, to give the food only 10-15 minutes, and then take the food away to make her hungry. Later she will eat herself. I have a Japanese Chin from a championship breeder, (please check it out from my facebook) I feed him a little than 1/4 cup dry food at mornings and a medium scoop of fresh raw ground beef mixed up veggie and rice (actually, the raw beef is the best food for dog). If you would like to know how to make raw beef dog food, please let me know.

I have two Japanese Chins. Brother and sister, two years old. I have tried the better foods and my dogs seems to like Fromm. I think they make a good food. I would stay away from beef based foods. I just got a new blend. Fromms, Game Bird Receipe for Dogs, grain free. I bought a bag of the Pure Vita, they did not like it. I started them out on Wysong as pups and they did well on that food. The Fromm is easily available, where the Wysong I had to mail order from the company. Chins can be picky about their food. I hope this helps.

Bella\'s Mom - 2011-07-05
I have a long haired chihuahua named Bella. She's now 13 weeks and her coat is still pretty short, with a little longer coat around her ears and neck. When does their coat normally come in or do some long hair chihuahua give birth to short coats. I saw both of her parents and they were both long coat. New to the breed and very confused.

I will try and answer. The coat on a your little chihauhua is not really going to grow faster than the hair on your head. Sometimes it just takes awhile. Also, right now her coat is a baby coat. At approximately 6 months old they will "blow" this baby coat and look like a regular chihauhau. Sometimes the coat stays long around the head but usually the coat just sorta dissapears. Don't be alarmed as this is normal. Then your little guy will start to grown his adult coat which the long hairs are known for. This can take as much time as a year but you will have a long haired looking chihuahau before that. But the coat probably won't be the length it is going to be as a full grown adult for up to a year.

I have a long hair chihuahua female she is 3 years old it takes a full year for them to get their full coat, in males longer, and in the summer their coat will stay slightly long but not thick. When my baby gets her fur in the winter she is really fluffy kinda like a Pomeranian but not so thick you will notice a big difference as she gets older make sure you brush her you don't want her to start getting knots ;)

Their coats come in around 3 years old. I'm getting a long hair chi in a couple week and I've been doing lots of reaserch :) :) :) :) :) :)
