We got a 5 year old female boston who is the love of our life!! Previously we have only had rotts and mastiffs, but our baby has changed our whole outlook! The new boston will be ready to join our family in about 4 weeks, however am concerned about the ear cropping. The owner said it was cosmetic and I'm not sure if I want to have it done or not. This is going to be a part of our family for our children to play and grow with, not to take to dog shows and compete. And no I dont think that showing dogs is wrong, I just dont feel that is the right path for us to take. Does the ear cropping have any advantages or disadvantages???

I know of no reason to crop the ears on a Boston. I had 3 dobies and the first one came with the ears cropped. The tape, the bandaids etc - The second one, the ears were not cropped and I asked the vet and he saidcropping was for cosmetic reasons for AKC onlky. No reason to crop. The dobies are shown in England without cropped ears. It was an AKC thing. Third dobie - did not crop. I had no problems at all - I sorta liked the no crop - They didn't look as ferocious and more cute. I wouldn't bother - not fun for the dog or the human and no reason to at all.

Cropping to me is cruel. I certainly would not want my ears cut to size. And it is so much fun just to watch Baby turn her ears when you talk about her.

NOOOO!!! We have had a Boston in the family since the late 1800s = NO CROPPED EARS. Besides being CRUEL it is totally unnecessary. Once they lose their baby teeth their ears will stand-up naturally - barring any unusual circumstances breaking the fragile cartilege. Mine is happily sleeping under my desk - haven't been able to attach to any other breed. Only Bostons for me...

When you state "they are good with other pets", you better make sure parakeets are not included. Our bichon ate our parakeet WHOLE this Saturday in from of friends and family. He is 6 yrs. old and very jealous. I will never be able to have another pet in the house. This was very traumatic.

What a cool name! I wonder if it has anything to do with Punch and Judy?

I've had a wonderful Lhasa for about 6 years now. Bachelor was about 4 when I got him. I inherited him from a friend because he'd bitten a little girl. The first couple of years were rocky. He wasn't housetrained and had severe separation anxiety when I would be gone at work all day. I had another female dog in the house, Sunni, but apparently she wasn't enough company. After many sets of chewed up miniblinds, my neighbor took it upon herself to start babysitting him everyday while I was at work. It worked out great for about a year! ...until they moved. Oddly enough, he's done fine ever since. We've since installed a doggie door so he, the Lhasa-Poo mix, Sunni, and Maxx the Golden Retriever have the run of the place and Bachelor has adjusted nicely. He's so spoiled. If he's not sleeping at our feet, he's up on our pillows right by our heads or between us. Lhasas are great dogs, but I agree, they don't like the teasing. We have actually had to 'learn' how to play with him because he plays different than the other 2 dogs. We are more careful with him so he doesn't feel threatened by play that is too rough, even though it's not intended that way. He has definitely picked out the 'leader of the pack' around our house. I would recommend Lhasas to any couple without children. They are great companions!

Non-sporting dogs are diverse group of dogs, their characteristics and features cannot be generalized. They are good friends to human. Non-Sporting dogs may no longer perform the tasks they were originally bred for.

We have a 3 yr. old Lhasa who sits in my lap and bends his neck/head straight back in order to see what's behind him....I've never seen anything like that before! Anybody else have one that does that?

I have had my lhasa apso since she was a puppy, she has been a joy in my life. She save my life once lol. I could not ever picture my life without my playful pal. Even though she has her moments in which she can be a handful like when she's eating out of the trash or rubbing her face on my sofa after she eats. she is typicaly my idea pet.

I have a shiba inu terrier mix, and she is very sweet and affectionate. Even though she is mixed with terrier, she favors a shiba inu as far as coloring and personality.
