We have a 4-1/2 month old Japanese Chin. She does well with most commands such as sit, stay, watch me, drop it, etc. but still does not always come when called. She also seems to get overly excited when meeting new people and dogs. We are retired and spend a lot of time with the training and taking her on long walks. She tends to sleep all evening and then wakes up around 5 a.m. We try to keep her up in the evening but when she is tired, there is no getting her to walk or play. These are concerns that we are wanting to correct - she is great and such a joy in our home. Thanks to anyone that has any suggestions.

She is still a puppy - very much so and although she might want to sleep at night, I'd take her out last thing. My guess is she is waking up at 5 am because her bladder is still a little young and it is a small pup. Coming when being called. This is just an opinion but something I learned from a professional trainor and it worked for me. Reward the positive behavior with a little piece of turkey hotdog. I know I taught the dog to come on each and every call, however, I believe I also taught the dog to be a professional pick pocket. Be careful where you hold the little pieces of hot dog. Let us know how it works.

Thank you for your reply. Had thought about her not being able to hold her toilet duties and think your most likely right. Would like to know more about the Chins if you have time - we are wondering if they really do lose most of their hair around 7 to 12 months and if their teeth have difficulty coming out. She is getting up around 5 and once outside seems to go right back to sleep for an hour or so. As far as the come, she just learned another trick but still doesn't want to come even when given the treats. Will continue working on that command. Thanks again.

OK chins are not an active breed they are apartment sized dogs not needing much activity. The walk maybe to long and she needs to rest. I own 3 chins they play early in the morning and rest most of the day away. They go for walks ever night but half way through I'm carrying the youngest one home. Being as yours is only a puppy she needs the rest. But if your extremely worried I'd talk with the vet .

My Westie is 6 years old and recently started having problems walking when I took him outside to go potty. I called him inside and he had trouble moving his back legs. Today he had problems moving his front legs. It is really cold about 20 degrees. I'm really worried. Please rsvp.

Does he have trouble moving his legs while indoors where it is not so cold? I would advise taking him to a vet.
  • Betty - 2011-06-07
Westies are prone to arthiritis. Do you have a regular vet? Ask him/her about this medicine called Rimadyl. My Westie takes it at mealtime, Its a small pill so i give her half in the morning and the other half at night. This drug is meant to drug for provide comfort for dogs with arthritis. Routine monitoring should be done while on any medication. My Westie is almost 13 years old and she is still trotting around like the best in town! She has bouts of stiffness- I do notice that when its cold outdoors it gets extra sensitive. My vet said that it can be because of the quick transfer of warm and cozy indoors to very cold outside. They pee and poop in the oddest positions and the instant warm to cold may stiffen up. Have a sweater for outdoors but take it off inside.
    Good luck,

I have a wonderful long-haired chihuahua named BUBBLE that I rescued from a puppy mill when he was 5. This is the sweetest, kindest little dog (at 11 lbs he isn't small by chihuahua standards!) He is VERY protective of me, but if people just give him just a few minutes to get used to them he will be their best friend forever! He is a fearless watchdog and incredibly smart with the cutest personality. Because of his background my single life is the perfect scenario for us. I have always had big dogs BUT am now a total convert...I love my "little man"!

Tonight I picked up this sweet long hair chihuahua from a family that found him running around in their yard a week ago. They live 15 miles out of town. He had no collar. Anyways I walked into these peoples house and he came right over too me and jumped into my lap and cuddled with me. I don't know anything about this breed, but your comments were comforting. Tomorrow is day one of our adventure together, just wanted to thank-you for your comments about the breed.

I also adopted "TAZ" exactly one year yesterday (2-13-10). He is a long haired chihuahua and weighs about 9 pounds. DO YOU WORRY ABOUT YOUR DOGS WEIGHT? I take Taz for walks but he seems to put on weight little by little. Taz is 6 and a half years old and was fixed right before I got him.

I found a long-haired chihuahua last night roaming around near a friend of mines house. She witnessed her being abandoned in a dirt lot near a 7-11 store. I am extremely grateful that she and I ended up in the same place at the same time. She is an extremely lovable and mild tempered little "Princess" and came in at the perfect moment to complete our family. She is currently at the hospital getting her check up and vaccinations but I am overwhelmed with excitement and cannot wait to start our new life together.

Our chug is just the sweetest thing in the world. Won't sit or sleep alone so be prepared. He was very difficult to potty train tho, but finally got it! We wouldn't trade him for anything!

Hello, We have a 9 month old chug. I noticed in your comments you said your chug was hard to potty train. Any suggestions??? Carly doesn't like to go outside and when she does she is so distracted with what is going on that it takes her forever to go!

I have owned several apbt's. I now have 2, 1 is 3 months and the other is a year old. Both are seal colored with white paws and white chest. They are my life. I spend as much time as I can with them. Guess u could say they are like my best friends. We do a lot together.. take walks, go to the park, go to the lake. They always make me smile, especially when they are playing together. My 3 month old tried to act as tough as my year old and he slings her all over the place lol. It's cute, but anyway apbt is a great breed. I wouldnt have it any other way... DONT HATE THE BREED.

I was wondering if you had any tips on how to train a pit bull. I have one who is about 6 or 7 months. I still can't get her to stop nipping and she has destroyed a lot things in the house. I'm not sure if putting her in a crate when I leave the house will help or what I should do.
  • Cassandra - 2011-05-18
Hi, I have a pit I got from Stray Rescue. He is about a year and a half old. He is crate trained to the point where all I have to say is "Crate" and he runs to his crate and sits, waiting for his treat and his quiet time (when we're gone). I highly recommend crate training because you never know what your dog could get in to, eat, etc.. while you're gone. There's all sorts of things in your house your dog could get hurt by: chocolate, household chemicals, kids toys, just to name a few. It's really important that the crate is a good place for them and not a punishment (ie don't put the dog in there when he/she has been bad). Petey loves going into his crate. As for the nipping, if you are playing and get bit it's important to say NO and stop playing immediately, that way he/she knows that you are serious and that biting you will stop playtime. That's what we did with Petey, and when we play he is fierce but gentle if his teeth touch my skin he will not bite down. Remember if he/she does something they're not supposed to do you have to scold them while they're in the act, not later on (they live in the moment). Be a pack leader and a strong but loving "parent" (pretty much) and I'm sure you'll get the response you're looking for! Hope this helps!

Titan - 2011-05-18
We adopted a pup 2 months ago that we named Titan. He is now about 6 months old. He is the 3rd dog we've adopted into our pack this year. Our children are grown, so it's just the 2 of us most of the time. Titan is the most gentle and loving of all 3. He is protective of the house and his family, including his little brother Harley (shepx) and his big sister, Auggie (Plott Hound/Great Danex). All 3 play together very nicely. Our oldest son has 2 Siberians that come over every weekend. Titan gets along with them too. I would highly recommend this breed to any family with just couldn't ask a dog to be more well behaved!

My 3 yr old longhaired chihuahua just turned 3 on cinco de mayo. He's the best thing that happened to me! He was given ro me as a gift when he was 4 months old. He is very protective of me but has a keen sense of whose good or bad. He's black, tan and white! Gets along with other small dogs. I wouldn't want another dog except him.

For little fellas, they can be very protective. They have so much personality and and they can be such clowns. I trust their opinion on people.

I have 2 of these beautiful dogs. One is a short hair and the other is a long hair. I am so tired of the stero-type that they are mean dogs. They are both just the sweetest little guys. Yes they bark at the door bell or strangers that come in the yard otherwise they will just lick you to death. They are even great with my 2 yr. old grandson. If he bothers them too much they will go outside or go lay down. The older one will growl if fed up but has never even nipped at him. I never thought I would ever own a chihuhua but now I have a 15 month and a 5 month. I have had them since they were 5 weeks and 8 weeks and wouldn't give them up for anything.

I loved mine too. I had 6 dogs over 100 pounds and this little guy ruled but I found him to be affectionete and loving with everything, birds, humans and my kids. Now if he could get along with my kids I'd say he could get along with everything.

Ok I'm 11 years old and I have a Long haired one ..... And yes her name is princess cuz she's adorable I took her to a dog traing on Thingy and she hated the social time she does not like being around other dogs but she's fine with children she just gets shy when she meets new people. One time I was teaching her to sit it took 5 minutes and she knew it but when I found her I was taking a walk around my neighborhood and she followed me home and on my way home my neighbor asked me e\if that was my dog I said no and she said that I should keep it because there was a lot of abused sofa being abandoned here so when my dad got home she was in my other dog cage under a blanket I told my dad it was max my other dog and he said ok but then I had to tell him so a Month later my dad said we could keep her so yay. But these dogs are so adorable playful and energetic princess is extremely fast but she's also lazy... Aha but only when I sit down she's my personal stalker she's my little baby!

We had adopted a wonderful Bully. Soon we saw that he had skin allergies .
We took him to the vet , she determined that he had yeast infection , along with allergies. She prescribed antibiotics and anti fungal meds. he was on them for 4 weeks. We also wiped his paws with vinegar water when entering the house. Also special medicated shampoo twice a week.
The meds made him nauseous at times and he lost some of his appetite.
Now he is free of problems and give him a table spoon plain yogurt to replenish his good bacteria. His appetite returned as well.

Glad all worked out OK. Somehow we get more attached to our pets when a few things go wrong and we work through them. I am glad for you. Good luck.
