We got our Westie (mixed) at the Humane Society. He is so adorable. We have had him since Dec 2011. They said he was a year old. Sometimes when we feed him he gulps everything and does not chew it up then later throws it back up. I noticed in the article I read that they can have hernias. Would this be a cause of his getting sick? We have tried all types of dog foods and he will not eat anything that has beef in it. We have tried the ones with chicken and after reading they like lamb I will try that. The vet at the Humane Society did not say he had anything wrong with him. How can we tell? Thanks for your information on the website!

Some dogs will eat way too fast and then they do throw it up.  Sits like a brick in their stomach.  Why don't you try mashing up the food a little (so he isn't swallowing whole chunks) and add about a tablespoon of yogurt for digestion and settleing the stomach.  You can also raise his bowl maybe about 6 inches using the stair, a stool etc.  Something stable so he can't knock the bowl over but something a little higher than the floor.  Westies aren't real big but they are pretty bush.  You could also try feeding him twice a day in small amounts rather than once a day with a larger amount.  It would be a good idea to have him checked out and mention this to your vet.

I have had "Hooch" for 3 years as I inherited him from an older family member who could not take proper care of him. He was so upset about the move he would not eat so I made him Meatloaf! It took a while for us to warm up to one another but he started sleeping with me under the covers and that was it! Now....... we are attached at the hip! He is so smart and a one woman dog! He only gets "barky" when someone comes to the door or approaches us on a walk. He is SOOOOOO affectionate & always by my side! I love him dearly and can't imagine life without my little red man with the floppy ears! ;-)

My husband and I had a Cocker Spaniel and were fairly pleased with him. He was a wonderful dog, loved attention, and was cuddly. It was very tough for us to send him to a new home. He was like one of our own children.

My lab had no issues until he hit about 7yrs old when he developed these seemingly overnight. For him it was an allergy he developed to fleas he didn't have until that spring. I started him on advantage and shortly after the problem was solved. You could try 1mg of benedryl for allergies once a day for a week or so and see if this helps the problem, maybe she scratches at night. Google search 'benedryl for dogs' so you have all the needed information before trying it though just to be sure you're not mixing any wrong meds etc.

Our baby, Paco is a four year old long haired chihuahua. Since we moved into a new apartment 2 months ago he been scratching like mad. I see no sign of fleas or hot spots or dry skin. We do have hard water (I think because we have water spots on the dishes), could he be allergic to the water? I have given him 2 baths since we have been here (because of the itching)? -or the grounds? The pine trees and red wood trees are new to him. Any suggestions?

Try feeding him Science diet sensitive skin- it works wonders!! You can buy it at Petbarn and most pet food stores or at the vet.

Some dogs start scratching due to nerves, it also could be the water. Small doses of Benedryl is acceptable for dogs (considering the size I would start with no more than 1mg/ 3lbs of dog weight maximum but start with half that 1mg/6lbs)

The Safety of using Benadryl for Pets

Generally, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is exceptionally safe for dogs; however, there are a certain number of serious precautions:

Diphenhydramine should not be administered to dogs with certain conditions: cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, prostatic disease, and hyperthyroidism.
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) may not be appropriate for a puppy. If you do have a puppy, please be sure to consult with your veterinarian first.
Only the pure med is safe for dogs, where the active ingredient is only Diphenhydramine. The Decongestant or Colds/Sinus versions aren't acceptable.
Childrens Benadryl may be alcohol and sugar free; however, it contains sodium, and this could be detrimental to dogs with certain health concerns.
It shouldn't be used simultaneously with decongestants and painkillers. It can also interact with other medicines, and possibly be fatal. Should your pet be taking any other types of medication - it's important that you first ask your veterinarian about using Benadryl. Generally, Diphenhydramine is considered safe for your pet when taking flea and heartworm tablets, as well as steroids.
It's extremely important that the prescribed dosage is not exceeded.
Many people recommend using small amounts of the medication first, then checking for any reaction to it. I recommend that you still talk to your veterinarian before giving any amount of Benadryl to a dog.

My lil one is 3 yrs old. She had 4 pups in October, I was worried as well about the same thing. Me and my husband sat up with her until 3 a.m. , helped her have the babies. She did an awesome job, being it was her first litter. My husband only had to help her with one, guessing she just got tired, being it was her last one, which is what we thought. We woke up the next morning to find she had 4..

Hi,
I have a beautiful female, one year old pom. And the problem is she has a mind of her own and very fussy about everything.
I have a couple of questions:
My mum and bro feeds her a lot of fish as she isn't interested in anything else either including dog food or chicken. Is too much fish safe?
Also, she doesn't obey any commands.. And get ferocious sometimes and if I try to make her obey she will bark continously..
Please help!

Fish isn't a good mainstay diet for a pup, just not enough nutrition, too watery and too much oil. Try feeding her a healthy food (I like Eukanuba) and use the fish as a treat for obedience training. Don't give her so much fish in training she doesn't eat her food. ou can also put a little juice from fish over her food and eventually eliminate that or try and little yogurt.

I have a chion but even though i have read that they are very sociable. She growls at my husband everytime he tries to touch her. One day she bit him on the lip when he was just trying to kiss her by her nose. But when i do it she doesn't bite or growl, shes use to me im aroudn more often but when it omes to my husband she is very protective but on the other hand she also protects him when he is around people. Intersting. How do I get my chion to be comfortable with my husband.

WOW difficult one. Sounds like she is most protective of you and then protective of the family. Have your hubby give the chion little treats with commands. Sit, Stay, Pet, Hug etc -- I like to use turkey hotdogs sliced and then quartered and just in a bag in my pocket. Your hubby without realizing it may have done something that scared the pup - so he maybe just has to get the pup used to him and you might as welll use it as training time also,.

Hi, I also have a female chion. She growls and bites anyone who tries to move her if she is resting, she snaps at children who try to stroke her. She is remorseful afterwards and knows she has done something wrong. She is very loveable and playful but when she doesn't want to be bothered, she makes it known. When she does attack, she is very quick and quite aggressive. She is very protective of me but she will even snarl at me if she doesn't want touching.
