I had a male beagle from a pet store for 13 years until he died of cancer. I also saved a 5 month old beagle mix from a bad home a year later. She lived for 12 years (even though she had many problems such as hypothyroidism and then later in life she developed diabetes and blindness). They were wonderful dogs and were very close to each other. They were very good with my boys. The problems that I had were the peeing especially when I would go out. I had to crate them everytime I would go out. They also dig up your yard horribly! A fence is a necessity, though you must chip them because they will dig under the fence and get out. Beagles are very cute, affectionate, and funny. They can be mischievous, and they act like they are starving all of the time. They cannot get enough food, and will even dig in garbage to get some! I recently adopted a beagle/shepard mix from the shelter. She is almost a year old and she is incredible with my 15 year old Autistic son and especially with my almost 2 year old Down Syndrome son. At times, he has gone up and smacked her, and she just rolls on her back and lets him, then licks his face to say it's ok and she understands. People considering this breed should be patient people who love animals. Beagles can be trained, but they kindly resist for a while. Beagles want to be a big part of a family, so you should be home a lot and include them in outings. A chest leash is important because a neck leash will choke them as they pull with their nose to the ground. Remember to check and clean their ears often, and when their ears get wet, dry them inside and out thoroughly.
Overall, a beagle is a great choice with the right owner and family.

We adopted our beagle, Kilika, 7 weeks ago from the Humane Society. She's one of the sweetest dogs I've ever had. If I had a dog clone, it would be her: smart, lovable, nuts, and when searching for rabbits or squirrels, headstrong. She's a very welcome addition to our family.

I have a seven week old chion bitch. She is absolutely adorable, fitted straight in with my other two dogs. She is toilet trained to her mats already and comes when called. She does feel the cold but a little jumper does the trick. She was picked from birth from a litter of five my friends papillion had, all completely different markings. She's a beautiful little dog, full of confidence and very loving. I would recommend this breed to anyone.

"Many breeders suggest feeding Miniature Dachshunds puppy food throughout their lives. Their diets should include horse meat, beef, wheat, and yellow corn. The Dachshunds are prone to obesity, so overfeeding should be avoided."

NO dog should be fed horse meat or yellow corn!

Dachshunds are prone to gaining too much weight. Which is precisely why they should NOT be fed puppy food their entire lives!

Corn can cause a bunch of skin problems the first ingredient should be meat.

We got our Westie (mixed) at the Humane Society. He is so adorable. We have had him since Dec 2011. They said he was a year old. Sometimes when we feed him he gulps everything and does not chew it up then later throws it back up. I noticed in the article I read that they can have hernias. Would this be a cause of his getting sick? We have tried all types of dog foods and he will not eat anything that has beef in it. We have tried the ones with chicken and after reading they like lamb I will try that. The vet at the Humane Society did not say he had anything wrong with him. How can we tell? Thanks for your information on the website!

Some dogs will eat way too fast and then they do throw it up.  Sits like a brick in their stomach.  Why don't you try mashing up the food a little (so he isn't swallowing whole chunks) and add about a tablespoon of yogurt for digestion and settleing the stomach.  You can also raise his bowl maybe about 6 inches using the stair, a stool etc.  Something stable so he can't knock the bowl over but something a little higher than the floor.  Westies aren't real big but they are pretty bush.  You could also try feeding him twice a day in small amounts rather than once a day with a larger amount.  It would be a good idea to have him checked out and mention this to your vet.

We have had our mini Dachshund for 3 days and I have fallen in love. My husband and I have 5 kids, and we love "Fash". However he is not eating his dog food which is puppy chow-what kind is best for him? He is 8 weeks.

I'm not sure what kind of food is best for your puppy, but I've had puppies before and so I've learned that if they don't want to eat their solid food at first. They'll eat it if you add water to it to make it good and soggy. Hope this works for your pup!

We kept a bowl of Eukanuba (ground up with blender). I would mix it with warm suplemental puppy milk.

Try to add a water, hot water, to make it soft and wait for 5 minutes before you give. Try Beef pro dog food, before my brand is eukanuba but it doesn't like my mini dachs.. so I switched it to Beef pro.

Mine is a very pickey eater I tried everything moist hard soft. Now he eats soft and moist but I have to sprinkel his food with NUPRO. It's a dog supplement. He loves it and it makes his coat nice and shinny. You can get it from ebay. It's much cheaper.

I have had "Hooch" for 3 years as I inherited him from an older family member who could not take proper care of him. He was so upset about the move he would not eat so I made him Meatloaf! It took a while for us to warm up to one another but he started sleeping with me under the covers and that was it! Now....... we are attached at the hip! He is so smart and a one woman dog! He only gets "barky" when someone comes to the door or approaches us on a walk. He is SOOOOOO affectionate & always by my side! I love him dearly and can't imagine life without my little red man with the floppy ears! ;-)
