I have an apple head who is coming into heat. We bought another male chihuahua who was representented as a toy but he is now 9 pounds, twice as big as my Mia. What would happen if I allowed them to mate? I love my Mia and do not want any harm to come to her. Would love to hear some first hand experience with this situation. I cannot believe I am the only one with this question. Thanks.

You need to take both dogs into a vet. It might be that they can not mate or it might be that that she will not be able to deliver naturally. I wouldn't go head and allow them to mate till you find out additional information.

When breeding small breeds your male should always be bigger than your female. The male determined the size of the pups..
  • carol - 2013-01-28
The male should NOT be bigger but smaller than your female otherwise the pups could be too big for your female to carry and deliver safely.

When I got my Chihuahua she was about a year old...I broke her to the peep pad but she loops in the flood beside the peep pad....how do l brake her on the pad.?

Chihuahuas should be mated for size. The smaller, the better. I would find a smaller mate and neuter your male. My Rosie is a non-spade female, who I have no intention of spaying, but I'm not interested in breeding. If I were to get another chihuahua, she would be female, also.

Please don't breed your dogs take a look at all the dogs in California and all over the US for that matter, that are being put to sleep, needlessly!
  • Carolyn - 2013-09-05
My experience it is better for your female to be a little larger than the male. If you're breeding for size, the smaller male will accomplish that purpose and the larger female will provide an easier birth and healthier pups and nursing. That said, both should be within size and weight range for their breed standards.

Almost all applehead chihuahua have to have a c-section because the head can't fit through the birth canal. I would consult your vet to get more info about this.

I have a male applehead, he has some long hair around his butt and ears, the rest is fluffy, but I wouldn't call it long, he is 2 yrs, 5 lbs, a sweet little boy named Tex, I am sure he would love to mate (or just date) your lovely lady dog.

I bought my Chion, Cozmo-Tiny a year ago for 100 dollars. Best money I ever spent. She was trained to go outside in 2 months. She has never had a bad day or been aggressive with other animals, people or children. I take her to my work where I am a teacher and she walks around my room greeting all the students. I plan on training her to become a therapy dog as she has a lot to offer. Wonderful animal, kind, caring, loving and smart!

I bought my Chion, Tiny a year ago. She was wonderful from day 1. She is NOT aggressive at all. I can put her in her cage when I go to work and she is just fine. She has learned a lot of tricks and is always willing to please. She was trained to use the bathroom outside at 2 months old. She would go to the door and cry. Very smart!

I first got to know about the Doberman in the mid sixties in Scotland. A boyfriend and his dad used to breed the Doberman & the German Shepherd. They would train them for Security and Police work. They would take them to factories as guard dogs for nights. After coming to South Africa in 1972 my husband and I decided to get a Doberman, a bitch called Susie, we eventually after searching high and low decided to breed her. She was a gentle dog when needed but a great guard dog and would never leave my side. Since Susie I have had 8 Dobermans, the latest 2 being Duke & Apollo, Duke is now 15 years old, he is the longest living Doberman that I have ever had. He is going deaf and is short sighted and suffers a little from arthritis, but before this, he has never been ill. He has been a loyal companion and friend that I will miss dearly when he goes over the rainbow bridge. Apollo is 4 years, and Duke has trained him well, they are both my constant companions, even sleeping in my bedroom on their own beds. I have had numerous breeds of dogs, but although all were loved, the Doberman has stolen my heart and I would pick one over any other breed. Oh by the way they are great with children, I have had 6 children and now have 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

About 5 months ago we bought a beautiful little American Pit bull terrier puppy, and since then, she has been a pure terror. We say she is the Velasoraptor we never had. She bites, doesn't know her name, not potty trained, destructive, ETC. Now, we realize, she is deaf. We are so sad for her. But, I had decided, I do know some sign language, and I will adapt it for her, I will train her to walk by tying her to my waist, and basically, we shall figure this one out. Of course, she will have to be spade. And we will not be able to register her. I tried to call the breeder, but his voice mailbox was full. He may have some male 'blues' left, but if deafness is inherited, male blues inherit agressiveness I've heard when they get older. Not to mention the fact, we love this dog, and will keep her. What a surprise that must have been to realise your little pup was deaf! But it is so great that you are going to work with her and help her make her way in a world that for her is silent. You guys rock! and I am so very impressed with your commitment:)

Hi my name is Judy. I adopted a long hair chi in 2010, december from the humane society in jasper texas. In the past 2 years I say she's having seizures. I've had people tell me they have heard of them having them. She is a unique color and look. She has a brother and sister who look like her. The vet says he hasn't seen a long hair chi that looks like her before. Tiki is her name and she is the love of my life. She loves playing with the kitten, they get real roudy sometimes. I got her because the dog that helped me through my husbands death got killed and I saw her picture 2 weeks later and said that's going to be my dog and I got her. Please help.

Do the seizures seem to be causing a lot of problems? I would say the first thing you should do is consult your vet. They may be able to prescribe some medication to help with the seizures and figure out why she is having them.
  • Debbie - 2013-09-18
Hi, I'm so sorry to hear that your pup is having seizures. Our last dog ( not a chi ) started having siezures about 6 months after we rescued her. She would just drop over like she was dead and either lay there or start making this awful high pitched sound, then lose bladder control. Once she was over it she seemed to be fine. It became more frequent and the vet surmised she had a brain tumor and eventually we had to put her down. She lost pretty much her eye sight and started walking into walls. Sometimes she fell down the stairs. It was absolutely heartbreaking and that's when we knew it was time to let her go. We now have rescued a male chi and he has become the love of our life. All I can say to you is talk to your vet and love your little girl for as long as you are blessed to have her.

I had a German Shepherd that Started having Seizures, Called the Vet and took her in. The Vet gave me a Medication and she did well for a while then she started to have more seizures so we upped her medication. We did this several times till she was taking the Maximum dose. Then she started where she was having 5 seizures a day and there was nothing we could do. We had to put her down and the Vet believed she had a brain Tumor. As she had so many Seizures. It was the hardest thing I've had to do. But it would have been selfish to let her continue to suffer. I had a long Haired Chi we rescued and Shortly after We put Dutchess down Skeeter Died. He had Congestive Heart Failure and his little Heart just gave out. We Just got a new Puppy. Another long haired Chi and He is Registered with the AKC and has Champions in his family. We already have him Spoiled. But he deserves it.
