I saw an ad for has a Labradoodle-Shih Tzu mix puppy that is available for adoption. The puppy is adorable! Still, I have concerns about the cross breeding of cross breeds and wonder if this puppy has a hardy life ahead of her. Thoughts?

Better a cross breed than an in bred.  Genetically each individual pup comes with whatever it has.  Some breeds are more prone to certain behaviors and or diseases.  When you cross breed species the likelihood of both breeds having genes for hip displasia or ear infections or skin infections are minimized - unless you cross breed two dogs that have similar genetic material - you should be just fine.

Consistency is the most important thing. Decide which metohd you want to use, and do it over and over again. When I was house breaking my puppy, I took her outside at regular intervals. When I was not home, she was in her crate. I also kept her on a leash inside the house for the first few months, so she was always near me. As she got better, I gave her more freedom. Don't be to worried if your dog has an occasional accident, just be consistent.References :

When you are starting from scratch - quickest way is to Goggle        Chion Breeders.   You will come up with many - all over the US but possibly one close to you.

My 14 weeks Chinese crested powder puff is already 7.27lbs; I can't find any growth chart for this breed. Is this weight is normal for his age? He supposed to be a pure breed. His mother is a powder puff as well and her weight is 12lbs while the father is hairless and he is much smaller (around 8.15lbs). Is it possible that this breed stop growing in an early age?

Her mom was a pretty large powder puff as they normally don't go over 10 pounds.  They grow quite fast from 1 week to 3 months and then the growth slows.  I would think another couple pounds and you have the size.

I got my little boy Charlie about 2 years ago and don't know really how old he is I'm thinking maybe 4. This little dog is so smart and loveable I have never had a dog love me so much we are always together and he has to give me hugs and kissess all the time and I do the same to him. He hates the cold and will not stay outside and we also have a 5 year old Lab/Newfie mix and she loves to stay outside so its kinda hard but she don't mind and they get along wonderful. The only problem I have with my chug is he always pees in my house he won't poo in the house I once read that a chug will pee in the house and mark everywhere so he can show you how loyal he is and would even die for you I don't know how true it is? If someone can help me with a way to train my chug to stop peeing in my house and he is very smart so I know he knows what he is doing he is just so stubbrn.

Chugs can be house broken just like any other pup.  As to why he is doing it in the home - I really couldn't tell you.  Is he neutered?  When you say  marking his territory - if he is neutered that usually helps immensely and puts a stop to it.  Just not housebroken?  Easy to do but take a ring of keys (ones you don't use) and keep them with you.  If the Chug looks like it is going to go potty in the home or starts to go potty in the home, throw the keys down at the ground and say 'NO'.  Keys make a big noise - do not hit the pup with the keys but close to him is OK.  Big noise usually scares them and stops the peeing and then you take him out.  You can try it.  Some have put keys in a soda can but that is large - the keys just can be in your pocket.

I rescued a 13 month long hair Chi a year ago. We named him Chico. He was advertised as being 8 pounds (big boy). Since then he has grown to 15 pounds. Vet says for his size he can be 15-17 pounds. I love him just the same. He came house broken and very lovable except he picks and chooses his friends. Only likes a couple of dogs and humans in the neighborhood and wants to kill the rest. When I am at work my Mom walks him and I fear for her falling when he meets up with someone he does not like. She spoils him when I am away. Not sure what I can do to stop this behavior...any thoughts?

I recently adopted a 1 1/2 year old chug from a rescue shelter. He is the most stubborn dog I know. He knows what you are talking about but will only do it if he wants to. Since he is older can someone give some advise on what to do. He was house trained when I got him. So this was a big plus. It is just like having a stubborn toddler in the house. I know I kinda have him spoiled he only sleeps with me because he likes the electric blanket. I got him his own and he won't sleep in it. He thinks every time I shower he is suppose to jump in. He follows me all around the house and will not go lay down until I sit down. When I do sit down. He makes me hold him in my lap. Any tips on how I can break some of these behaviors.

Have no fear, you are doing very well.  It sounds like your furry friend is training you quite well and that is all that is needed for a perfect relationship.  Seriously, nature of the pooch - just enjoy it and if a particular behavior bothers you - just say 'NO' and put him in his bed or in a crate.  Sounds like he loves you and all affection on his part though.
  • Shirley - 2012-11-24
Thank you. I love him so much I just want him to know when I say no I mean no! You are right I feel like he is training me than me training him. :).
  • Charlie Roche - 2012-11-24
They are just sooo cute and adorable and lovable and a person has a tendency to laugh or hug when we know we should say 'NO'.  Puppy is very smart and he will understand 'NO'.  Us humans - we are very trainable by the furry things we love.

You know what always pisses me off, when people start saying that pitbulls or rottwielers (sorry dont know how to spell that) ect. are mean and aggresive dogs, because the truth is any dog can be aggresive. It's all based on the owner. I mean you don't see people bad-mouthing wiener dogs or yorkies when they bite someone. Anyway didn't mean to yell at anyone just wanted to express myself

Some dogs are easier to train than others.  Some humans take the necessary time to train their pups and some don't.  Different breeds of dogs are know to have different dispositions and maybe because they are hunters, or fighters, or just larger - they need a human that is able to provide quality training.  Many humans can train a poddle for example as they are eager to please where possibly a pitttbull needs a firmer or more experienced trainor.  Parrots have different personalities and some are just so easy to have as pets and require no training to speak of.  Some are a little stubborn.  So yes, it is based on the owner and it is also based on the personality of the breed or species.

You are right when you say any dog can be aggressive. But what a lot of 'pitbull' owners don't understand is that terriors are naturally dog aggressive. It does have a lot to do with how the dog is raised. But 'pitbull' owners need to always be aware of the terrior in them and understand their dogs body language to hopefully prevent any negative reactions from their dog.

I recently adopted a 5 year old male pit bull mix ( I think he's mixed with a lab) he's well behaved and shows manors. I walk out the door first and got him to stop tugging the leash on our walks by simply pulling the leash up instead of back ( thanks to the dog whisper). He's a friendly dog but I feel he may be to friendly. How do I know if he will protect my family if we are in danger? There are also sometimes where I'll give him a tug  and and he doesn't respond, I've asked how to change this and people have told me to hit him hard. Is there another way to get this pit to respect and listen without beating him? I don't want him to become vicious I have a 4 year old and I don't need dog to attack. I just need him to respect what I say and protect my family. Are there any other methods ????

I do not know how you train a pitt bull - I do know that you should never hit or beat a dog -
  • Anonymous - 2012-09-16
Thanx but that really doesn't help much. Does anyone else know what to do ?
  • Robert - 2012-09-16
Many say they have a  pitt bull lab mix - and I am not quite sure if I believe there are that many pitt bull lab mixes running around. In any case - you are saying you do not have complete control of the pup - then I would under no circumstances have him around a 4 year old child. Kids play, they make noise, they throw stuff animals for fun, and you do not know what will set the pup off - too many articles with these dogs hurting children. In some cases killing them. They are all friendly - till they are not. They require a strong, knowledgeable consistent trainer with a lot of experience.

I personally use a 'pinch collar' to walk my pitbulls, both my pits are males, one neutered ones not. And without a pinch collar they pull me all over the place. With a pinch collar, it does not choke the dog in any way if fitted properly, and causes no harm IF used properly. It just causes a 'pinch' to the neck of the dog if they are pulling, 9 times out of 10 one little 'tug' (PLEASE never ever yank or pull extremely hard on the leash when using a pinch collar as it could cause damage to your dogs neck) a quick snap of the leash always puts my dogs right back at my side. Without having to use any type of 'hitting' your dog, you should never hit your dog, that will only cause him to become afraid of people and possibly even aggression. Hope this helps. Literally the first walk with a pinch collar had an amazing difference my dogs, Blade and Kadar now enjoy daily walks, and I now enjoy them as well because I'm not being pulled every which a way. :)

As Far as protection goes a 'pitbull' or 'pitbull mix' become very attached to their owners. And though they may never show any signs of aggression or protection once your dog has had time to bond to you and your family I can ensure that he will protect you and your child. My dogs have had no training other than basic training (sit, come, stay, heal basic stuff) and I have no doubt in my mind they will protect me and they have proven it time and time again. 'Pitbulls' are naturally protective, but it would be wise to be extremely aware of your dogs body language around other dogs, no matter how friendly he seems with other dogs, some dogs can be fine with 100 dogs then for no reason whatsoever attack the 101st dog. If you don't put your dog in a situation to fail then he can't fail. Example: Pitbulls especially males can be dog aggressive so for obivious reasons my dogs don't go to the dog park. If you don't put your dog into a situation where something bad could happen and cause more people to fear the breed then you should have no problems with your new dog. I'm not saying keep him away from every other dog, i'm just saying it is wise to very slowly introduce your dog to any other dog you'd want them to play with. You need to be very aware of your dogs body language as almost always they give warning signs before they bite/attack.
