Animal Stories - Strawberry Finch

Animal-World Information about: Strawberry Finch

Strawberry Finches, also known as the Red Avadavat, are perhaps the most popular of all the waxbills! The word "strawberry" suits these little birds because of the beautiful, strawberry like coloration of the male during breeding season.

Hi, I'm looking for a pair of Strawberry finches because of their beautiful song. When I was younger you could set a trap and catch them easily because there where so many here in Puerto Rico. Now I think they are extinct and I cant find them here in PR anymore. If somebody reads this please let me know if you can help me find a good pair for reproduction. Thanks

i have a pair of strawberry finches housed together with a pair of chestnut munias. the munias were very friendly towards the strawberry finches. the munias use a nestbox in which both of them stay for most of the time, in fact, they rarely come out unless they are hungry or thirsty. the red munias (we call strawberry finches 'red munia' in india) never showed any interest in nest box so i did not give them any. recently, the male red munia is changing its plumage into darker red color and is singing beautifully to his mate. the female also responds to his call and dances. i have noticed that the female's beak is turning blackish.(it was pale orange before). now they are shredding paper and cotton and are trying to carry them into the nest box which the munias reside in and they are being chased away. are these signs indicating that the strawberry finches might want to breed? should i give them a nest box or separate them from the chestnut munias? please help! thanks

I don't think you can import any parrots into the United States anymore but will double check.
  • Lee Worton - 2012-05-26
I also heard, we can't import. But a person already breeding them inside the US is different, that is NOT importing. I have been looking for years for strawberry finches and was not able to find any.

Hi i am looking for a pair of strawberry finches. Young breeding pair please

  • Charlie Roche - 2012-01-24
You don't need to look for a young breeding pair - just a male and a female. They breed so young and will adapt a lot easier to a new enviornment then an established breeding pair. Leave yourself open to both and remember with a new pair whether young or proven - the first clutch or two might just be for practice. Many people sell 'proven pairs' because they have found them not to be good parents. They don't sit the eggs or feed the babies. So they sell a young proven pair for additional monies and just pass on the problem. Why would someone sell a 'good proven pair?'
