My wife and I have observed a small flock of Spice mannikin Finches in our yard in northern Orange County, Fullerton, California. This the second year they have passed through here. We assume they are passing through because we did not see them all year.

Hello:

In the southern part of the island of Puerto Rico, in the city of Ponce were I live; there are flocks of the spice bird. We can see it
in the urban area, also picking the seeds left by the pet birds.
They eat the seed of the called "Hierba de Guinea", which is a grass
originally from Guinea in Africa; brought by the spaniards to feed
cattle.

I found a flock of wild Nutmeg Mannikins feeding in a brushy area near a 7-acre lake in southern San Jose, California (behind 5750 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, 95118) on Friday, August 6, 2004, about lunchtime.

(There have been flocks established in the area since 1998 - see http://home.att.net/~redknot/almadenbirdlist.htm, bottom of page.)

I once had a male Gouldian Finch named "Johnny". When I put some shredded paper in his cage, he began "rolling" his cage. He also liked to drape the paper everywhere, even from the top of his swing, and it was the funniest sight! I loved his dance. When he would see himself in the mirror he would begin jumping up and down in place while he sang. Finally, I bought him a mate we named "Frankie". These two birds were very cute together, especially when they slept side by side. Later I provided a nest and Frankie layed eggs. My family was so excited that we were going to have babies! Sadly, one morning I woke up to find Johnny lying dead on the eggs. I wish I knew what happened.

I started with two and I now have eight! It was great fun to watch their courting and nest building, egg production and fledgling antics. I have developed a greater appreciation of all birds, thanks to my zebra finch friends!

I bought a pair of zebra finches about 6 months ago. I enjoyed their cute littlness, their abnoxious song, I absolutly love em. They have hatched four babies and i have had to buy another cage. They love to play, they jump on their swing and swing and swing then jump over to ther house and play what it seems like hide and seek with each other. Granted they are not very good people birds they are like fish they are fun to watch.
