A flock of pintail whydahs returned to our garden in November, making it the third year in a row they've wintered here. Along with a dozen or so females and possible juveniles, there's at least one male who is changing from breeding plumage -- he's lost his long tail feathers but still has a lot of black and white. Before they left last spring we had two males in full breeding plumage. I live in Tustin in Southern California, and I wonder if mine are the same ones mentioned by PK.

I just discovered the name of this funny flying bird. He has visited my Southern California garden for the past two summers. Arriving in July and this year is still here (Oct). I also have seen a female and a non breeding male. The breeding male I think is attracted to a bird I haven't identifed yet. Hoping to snatch a picture soon.

My spice finch has started nesting, while the male every time remains singing. These spice finches are wild, not pets. I have a wild silverbill pair, male and female, both are heated but no mating. I also have red strawbery finches and they have started mating, but the zebra finch tease them when they start mating. My zibra finch is a great prblem for my red strawberry finch pair. I decided to buy society finches so that i can get hybridization production. I put all these finches in a cage, not and aviary room. My cage vertical size is 4 feet while horizental wise it's 4.5 feet and it's width is 3feet. I know its small but not too small.

I live in Puerto Rico and here on this island the Pintail Whydah is a very common finch. I paid just $15.00 in a pet store for one of them. I heard that they lay eggs in the Society Finch nest. I have mine living with Societies and I'll find him a female to see what happens. Thanks for the information and something new about this finch!

I was disappointed to learn that I could not handle my spice finch, but this is a very informative guide.

If I do manage to teach it how to perch on my hand, I'll definitely come back and share it with everybody. Thanks for the extra help!

I have 2 very special finches and the reason why they are very unique is because they will sit on my finger when I go to reach for them. They will also sit on my shoulder when I move around.

Hi, I am really young but I wish I could save up my money for a little bird; but I would have save up for all of this stuff like it's cage, a LOT of food and of course it's play toys, because I know that finch's need a LOT of things to play with. (I learned from reading!) I would also like a small bird for a pet. I just hope my dad lets me! So, I would just like to thank this website for giving me this information and it has really helped me want a finch MORE! My parents will definitely love that! Hehe. Thanks a lot!

I have 1 pair of these cute little birds. they are so cute and i love the sound that they make. I have a huge cage for them and they are happy and they are always playing with each other. when i come up to the cage to feed them or to put in a new toy they start talking to me! it is so cute. The boy is named Brown Sugar and the girl is Cinnamon. Right now they have about 5 or 6 eggs. It was kind of funny the first time they laid eggs, they didn't really know what to do. I gave them the nest for finches but they wouldn't go in. i tried so many different types of birds nests and finally found one that they like (a canary nest!). i am happy now because before the eggs would fall down at the bottom of the cage. i can't wait until the babies come! :]

I bought several strawberry finches years ago. they are great pets with great personality, especially in the morning hours just before the sun rises. The males sings a great song for over an hour until it's mate decides it's enough that morning. Great color of reds when the mating season is here, however they are hard to find these days and several have aged and I need new ones. they have bred at times, very hard being caged but can be done. Wondering where can i get some more strawberry's, they are just a favorite bird to have around and watch them grow. I'm in New Jersey,,and have look all over the state and other states for them...can't find them.
