My sweet Bella died unexpectantly on Mon. We only had her for 5 mos. I found her laying at the bottom of the cage. Any idea what could have been the cause of death?

Various things could be the cause of death. Just like humans sometimes die quite young for heart problems or kidney problems etc - so can birds. Also, sometimes a bird can become very frightened at night - a shadow, a noise and they could break their neck flying into the side of a cage or wall. I keep a night light on. It is unusual but it canhappen. I am sorry.

My mama budgie laid 10 eggs in 14 days time. All I have a wooden house nest of dimensions 5x5x5 inches, eggs start hatching and they have 8 different size babies number 9 passed away the day it hatched out and the last egg should hatch today or tomorrow. Anybody knows if that area will be enough for them to survive and grow up. ? in the same cage I have another house with same dimensions, but not used can I move the oldest ones ( fulffies ) to it ?

WOW chances are if you move the older ones to the other nest- mom will stop feeding them. however, I doubt that mom can feed that many anyway. The normal clutch is 4 - 6 and sometimes mom won't feeed all of them. I would plan on pulling the oldest and prepare to hand feed. Frequently thhe older babies will accidentally (and sometimes on purpose) kill the younger ones. You are going to be busy.
  • Mutaz Abbu - 2011-10-22
You are right , the old ones seems to be accidentally killed number 8, egg number 9 hatched and baby been killed same day , egg number 10 decided not to hatch. Anyway I started today by picking the oldest three and moved them to the other nest. Hopefully this clever mum will feed them , otherwise I will follow your direction and start feeding them manually. Thanks for the advise indeed .
  • Charlie Roche - 2011-10-22
Sorry but mom can only feed so many and the older babies will squash out the young ones. Whether they mean to or not doesn't make a difference - it just happens. The last egg probably didn't hatch because mom couldn't sit the egg that long and feed the hatching babies also. It is real unusual to have that many eggs. Just watch and make sure mom keeps the older ones crop full cuz otherwise you will have to hand feed them. It isn't hard just remember not to squirt and just lay the formula on their tongue and let them swallow. Good luck.

Thanks for the directions and the advise, Charlie, after moving the three oldest ones to the second nest I have keeping the other tiny four in the old nest. Mum was feeding the old nest four while the Dad start feeding the new nest three. Next day Mum start visiting both nests feeding all and cleening the floor of both nest clean from the chicks dirts. All 7 in a good health conditions. Dad is now feeding Mum and Mum feeding all chicks it seems that I am lucky this time to have such a smart hard worker couple of Budgies. 4 chicks start having the feathers and colours. ...

Yeah that is great. I am happy and excited for you. Congratulations and good work. It is amazing to watch and see it happen. I don't know why but always amazes me. Emjoy.

You aren't going to be able to do it for awhile - till their coloring comes in. Scroll up the article and look under breeding. The males cere - right above the beak is blue and the females is a beige/yellow color. It is said that the males bob their head more frequently. The feet are usually a lighter color on the females but there is no exact science without DNA sexing except via the cere coloring.
  • Chhay - 2011-10-18
The male or female parakeets are depend on their cere. Male parakeets cere has deep blue or deep pink or blue with pink. Female parakeets have white cere. Remember that some female parakeets have some lighter blue color, but not pink color. Generally, the female cere has white color more than the others. You cannot distinguish young parakeets male or female until they change their first feathers.

We got our derbyan when he was 9mo old. He turned two in May and is really a delight. He is quite a talker, but we don't have much time to teach him tricks. When we are home from work, he thinks we should be in the same room or he really let's us know with his loud squawking. If he thinks we are mad at him and tell him NO, he tells us "I love papa, papa, dad n' dad and BARNEY!!! Works every time, lol.

Are birds really allergic to avacodos I'm not taking a chance

My human has had feathered companions for years and always told that avocado is actually toxic for birds. Can really make them quite ill or possibly die. Chocolate is not good for them - at all and can possibly cause harm but avocado - I wouldn't take the chance.

You can file it or have the vet file it. Now easier way and before I would try this - get one of those concrete perches and place it at the highest level in the cage that they can perch on. They will usually file their own beaks and nails using the perch. A lava rockk on a chian (bird toy) is good but the perch works the best. They do not like their beaks filed so best to get the perch.

How can you tell a female from a male golden mantred rosella? It is the australia parrakeet.

The males have much brighter coloring than the females. Also, the head of the male is flatter than the female. The females head is a smooth curve from the eye area to the neck and the males head is flatter with a slant at the back portion of the head leading down to the neck.

Go to bird talk and look up breeders ads in the back and see what you can find. You can also try online - I don't know where you live - and look for breeders.
  • Wendy Scott - 2011-08-11
If you are still looking for a female derbyan contact Wendys Winged Companion in FL (different Wendy). You can find her on birdbreeders.com I am getting a male from her tomorrow. This will be the 2nd bird I've gotten from Wendy and even with having to ship, she is wonderful to deal with. There was one female in the clutch that she thought she'd sold, but I just checked after seeing your post and the female is still available. Good Luck.
  • WENDY CARLSON - 2011-08-11
    Good Evening Renee,

As Wendy Scott relayed, I do have 1 female derbyan available. She is the oldest of the clutch, and the only female. Her mother talks up a storm and runs the roost! Please feel free to email me at wendyswingz@bellsouth.net. I'd love to help in any way I can.
  • Missi - 2011-09-25
Wendy S., last weekend I got a male from Wendy C. from the same clutch as yours :D Email me! It will be fun to watch my little guy's brother grow up, would you agree? :) missi.bellande@gmail.com
