Scroll up and look under housing in this Animal World article for recommendations on caging. Get rid of the doll rods that come with the cage. Birds really can't hold on to those smooth surfaces and their feet will cripple or hurt - just like a human trying to hang onto a broom stick or balance onone. You can purchase cholla brances or just use branches from a fruit tree - or sanded manzanita. Put a concrete perch as the highest perch in the cage for sleeping and that way his nails and beak will stay trimmed cuz he will do it himself. Toys - all sorts of toys for your little one are avialbe at pet stores but you can make them too. A real small dixie cup - they find fun. A popsicle stick. A toilet paper roll, a piece of paper towel - especially if you hold it and play peek. Just have fun and enjoy

Even when housed inside, birds get a heavy white down undercoat to keep them warm for the winter. When spring is about here, they SHED the down - all those little white feathers - that they don't need as warmer weather is coming.

I don't know what the peripheral vision of a parrot is but when I call my bird(s) they look at me. If they look out the window and see a strange car - they make a big racket. It seems they look at where their head is facing but I think they have better peripheral vision that humans do.

I have a pair of Indian Ring Necks that had a clutch of 5 eggs, only 1 was fertile and hatched, but died because the mom didn't feed it. Now I have 3 fertile eggs and I am afraid that the mom won't feed them again. I bought them from a lady that said she didn't want any babies, so when the pair would have eggs she would take them out and throw them away(cruel). Do you think the female will feed them this time, or should I plan on taking them out? How do I take them out if they hatch every other day? As they hatch? Will she hurt the others if I do pull them one by one? I have never done this before, but I don't want the babies to die. Please help. Thanks.

They say and I have found the first couple of clutches are free. It takes a clutch or two for mom to learn to incubate (actually sit the eggs) and it takes time for mom torealize that she has to feed them. With that women throwing the eggs out, mom never learned. They are not in the wild where they see other memembers of the flock, breeding, incubating andfeeding. If you see mom is not feeding the babies and it is day 1, I would just use a pipette and give the baby a drop of Pedialyte (warmed from grocery store) You can do this by placing the Pedialyte water on the top of their beark (toward the end) and they will catch it as it falls. Day two - if she still isn't feeding them - do the same thing but use Pedialyte and mix it will formula for birds per instructions on back. Day 3 = if still not feeding you followinstructions and by this time the second egg (if fertile will be hatched). If you don't let mom learn to fee, she never will. Pull the babies if she harms one and feed them but give her another chance with the next litter. Shorter version - if she doesn't attempt to feed them, you are going to try and show her to feed them. OK? Good luck love birds are tiny.

I understand what you are saying about putting it on the babyies beak so it will have something, but how am I gonna show mom how to feed? If I stick my hand in there where she can see me or get a hold of me, she will tear me up..?

WOW not tame huh? Sorry about that, I just in error assumed they were tame as my bird parents always were. You can't then. If you can close off the entrance to the nest box to prevent mom from ripping you up, you can try and just feed them in the box. If not then, yes, you would have to pull them as they hatch and place them in a brooder or start them at a 95 degree temperature somehow. Feeding Indian Ringnecks from day 1 - is no way going to be an easy task. Maybe that is why the woman threw the eggs out. I have hand fed from the egg for many years with many different parrots and no way would I be enthusiastic about this task. I would do everything I could to have mom feed the eggs. I don't think you'd be able to close off the nest box and actually help to the extent the babies would live. I don't think - unless you are a really experienced hand feeder that you would be able to feed these guys and have them live. Best chance is with mom and letting her learn. Hopefully that works. I wouldn't want to feed Indian Ring Necks before the age of about 10 days - so the oldest would be about 15 days and the youngest 10 days. I'd pull them all at one time.

I have a Budgie parakeet name Polly. I'm getting another one soon. I'm naming it Penny or Perry. Polly is under 1 year old and he likes to talk to other birds outside. We call him vampire because he likes to swing upside down. He's an active bird and I love him very much.

thanks for the tips earlier but the nuts for the birds must be raw or toasted...and one more thing i jus caught them mating i left the room while they're out for less than five min to come back and see this shall i put them in the same cage but i can't have them having babies my parents were not happy about them from the beginig what shall I do ??

If you didn't want babies, then you should have gotten just one or two of the same sex. It is probably to late to do anything now.

i have a male and female parakeets i did see them mating other day they have been acting strange lately i have now notice the female has taken out all their out cup by taking her feet pushing out food . so now does this meaning she marking where she may hatch her eggs if she is going to have them she never done this before and male follows her every where .is there something i need to do ?? thank you

Go to the pet store and purchase a nest box and nesting supplies she may have kids on the way however I heard first round sometimes are infertile

I have 2 budgers a male w/blue chest,blk and wht fealther a female all white but the female seem to be in controll at all times. It seem as if the male can't eat until she lets him she even gets to the point she trys to fight him, then after a while he gets very loud w/ her an keeps turning his head back an force is he tryin to let her know he's the BOSS then they start kissin is the kissin a part of mating? The 'bracelets' as you call them are identification bands and are put on the bird by the breeder, identifying the breeder. They should be a closed band. You can take it off - not easy but doable or have the vet do it. My opinion, most parrot females rule the roost outside of breeding season. It is their desires, their wishes, their wants that come first. This changes during breeding season when the male becomes more dominant and says 'stay in the back of the cage' or 'stay in the nest box' etc. Works for them. Yes kissing (or regurgitation of food) is part of the mating process.

There isn't any easy answer to this problem. Lottq people/vets trying to figure it out for a lotta years. Some say boredom - so more toys. One fella gives his parrot a magazine and everyday she chews a magazine up which stopped her from pulling out her feathers. My birds have a TV/toys/out of their cages and one still will pull her feathers out. Now might be good news here. If your little guy is pulling out this furry little white feathers that blow all over - it is normal. Depending on where you live - it is getting warmer and they don't want that undercoat of down. Pain trying to vacumn them up but normal. If she is actually pulling out her feathers trying soaking her down more often or spraying with aloe spray spritz. Try adding a little more oil to her diet via peanut butter, almonds, cracked walnuts. A magazine or anything she can chew up.

Thanx for the tips I'll try and add more oil but i wonder if they'll eat it I tried feedidng them fruit anf veggies but all they eat is the seeds that were fed to them in the pet store before i got them but I'll thy putting new things with there food but befere adding nuts do they have to be toasted or raw is fine ??

I never had a bird that ate fruits and veggies either. They just throw them at me. However, they do eat the dehydrtated fruits and vegetables that i get at Goldenfeast. I have used their food for over 15 years. Walnuts - just the regular in shell walnuts you buy at the grocery store and break them in half. They get a kick out of playing with them and they hold the walnut with their feet and eat the meat out. You can put peanut butter or almond butter on a ritz cracker. Again, they have fun cuz it sticks to their feet but they eat it. Almonds - I just get those in a package so I assume they are roasted.

Taming mature birds that are wild is a long process of patience and love. In your case that is coupled with the fact that you have a breeding pair. They are bonded to each other, and perfectly content with that. Success in taming is much easier with a single bird that is looking for a friend. It will take a lot of time, a lot of patience, and may never be totally interested close companionship with humans. It's great that you are giving them a good home, but your best bet may be to pursue breeding them, and then handrearing the babies for pets.

I have a ringneck and he is a pain in the ass half the time, but he does talk and is friendly only when he wants to be. when he flys and lands close to the floor, he will let ya pick him up but thats about it, I've had him for about 7 years now. about how old do ya think the are, and are you sure of there sex? good luck!! cheryl
