I have male Alexandrine! Whenever I try to play with him on my hands ! Instead of following what I am saying ,he starts to rechew his food! I don't know why! He spit on my hand and again he will have same thing ! Plz help me out !

This is NORMAL parrot behavior. It is called regugitation and it is a sign of their love and affection. They only have one thing they can give you and it is food so they try and give you their food. When my birds would start to do this (cuz sure not fun on top of my head), I would just grab their beaks and say 'mom, not hungry' and give them a kiss on the beak and a pet. I didn't want the reused food but I didn't want to hurt their feelings. Worked for me.

I have a 1 year old female alex named Dalilah. The only warning I have for a future owners is DO NOT COUGH around these little mimickers. Both my wife and I shared a cold and were coughing for weeks and now she mimicks it perfectly. Anyone who meets her thinks that we're mean by not taking her to the vet for a flu shot! This happened to me. I let the male stay by itself, then I tamed it. It will not get sad if you tame him and play with him. So if you don't have time to play with the bird then buy one but make sure it's almost the same age as the male. Mine lived 12 years by itself. It was the same age as me but it died.

I bought a pair of Derbyans in 1992, who have had many babies. I have never tried to "tame" the pair, but they have become very calm with me over the years. I kept some of their babies and they all are wonderfully tame. They have the most beautiful voices you will ever hear! They love to sing and laugh, play with each other, chase each other around - good exercise,and have fun. They like sitting on my shoulder or head. They are very calm and very gentle birds, but can startle easily. Most say/sing "beautiful Derbyan Parakeet birdie", and "Way up in the sky little birds fly", "pipe down", "it's okay, you're okay", "owie, owie" and many other words and phrases and each other's names. They are my very favorite species of parrot!

I have an absolutely gorgeous male Derbyan. He is almost 6 years old. He has the most terrific vocabulary, very comparable to a Congo African Grey. Honestly, his vocabulary is better than many CAG's. He can be a real sweetheart, but he is actually kind of sneaky or unpredictable from day to day or hour to hour. I've been debating on what to do. He has actually lived as a cage mate with a male spectacled amazon. They are for sure "The Odd Couple". Recently, the Derbyan has become very aggressive with the little amazon, very similar to the way a pair of breeders will often become. I wonder what would happen if I separate them? I also wonder if I were to purchase a female, would he possibly bond to her and become a breeding pair? Thirdly, do you think he would calm down and be more predictable and handleable if he were separated from his buddy? Do you know where I might be able to acquire a female and what would be a good price? I live in the Midwest, if that help in answering the price question. Though Ricky has been one of my prized possessions, due to the fact that they are fairly rare (at least around here) and one of the most colorful and beautiful birds I've ever seen, especially for being as large as he is. There are lots of colorful small bird and of course many beautifully colored macaws, but he's kind of mid size at about 23 inches long. Although I am very satisfied with your website, I do think you should be a tad bit more detailed and ,well, truthful. You say that every bird is incredible, sweet, and lovable. I do think you should be more candid.

I a commenting to "missingmybird" and also to the one who asked how you can tell the sex of a bird... vets can tell for sure, ha, but other than that, its their ceres "beak" color, if blue a boy, if pink a girl, easy to remember-- but sometimes one must wait a bit because my present keet was about 3 months when his ceres went from pink to blue and later vet confirmed.
To missingmybird, 7 yrs is a nice life--and you gave him a good one and a nice end for him to kiss you before going to birdie heaven... I had a keet that ran into things--everytime he flew-- and we realized he was partially blind so that may be it with your precious parakeet. I hope you consider getting a new one. My blind one only lived 5 yrs but my present bird is 12 years old next mo and doing extremely well.
Even though my talkin Tweet is 12, I never had his wings-- or nails-- clipped and his cage is always open but I'm careful that he never got used to combing the floors, you know like we do beach combing-- it's dangerous what they will put in their mouths... but they like children, they won't hurt them, and like to fly, that is so important. and unless you have been trained to clip wings and nails you really shouldn't do it yourself![thinking of someone here who commented].

I love having parakeets. I had a beautiful girl named Bebe for 3 years, but someone left the door open and she flew away right before a hurricane like storm, so I lost her. I cried for 2 days because she did lots of cute stuff and my husband and I loved her alot. Then,a year ago I got 2, Dude and Precious, and Precious died a couple of months ago. We had a funeral for her and buried her under an oak tree. Now I got Zen about 4 months ago, and I thought it was a boy, but the cere changed color so I think its a girl! I am confused, and may have to call her Zena! Anyway she plays soccer with a golf ball and carries a tiny baseball bat around in her mouth and is very funny. Dude is rather timid but is a beautiful white and turquoise. I am thinking of getting another one soon. I love them!

My wife and I and our three children just received the gift of two young parakeets one blue, one yellow. My wife was outside with the dog when the blue one started to land on her. Not knowing what it was she swatted at it (she did miss though). After realizing what it was and seeing it had a partner, we started the process of catching them. After an hour of trying to catch them while they were wanting to land on us but were too afraid to, my wife was able to grab one (of course it bit the flitter out of her). We put it in a cage and finally caught the yellow one, and now they are both in the cage and are very content. We put up flyers thinking they just got away from someone, but no one has called. So we will keep them and care for them as we have had so many more animals in the past. My wife named them "lost" and "found" and it has stuck. Now it's just a matter of training them to not bite and building a larger cage for them. This all happen three days before Easter. I guess the Easter Bunny was a little early (hopefully next year he will remember that we all enjoy egg hunts, but we prefer them before they hatch and can fly, its a lot easier).

I have parakeets that appear to be male and female. A friend heard they (and cockatiels) mate for life. I cannot find this listed anywhere. Can someone tell me if this is true or how to encourage their breeding relationship. Thanks

Hello Ian, I don't know from which country you are posting, but I may have a very convenient solution...I am a regular volunteer at the Whitby Humane society in ontario canada. In a house fire in fenland falls recently it was discovered that a local woman was a bit of a ''pet hoarder'' over 300 animals were removed from her home including a menagerie of over 130 birds, most of which are exotics. The entire bird population was sent to whitby where I now look after them all! Needless to say, that is quite a bit of work! I am currently housing TWO pairs of mated eastern rosellas who are quite content, and vet certified. Their cages are even side by side and there hae been absolutely no problems with bickering between either pair or around the other birds, even a juvenile congo african grey! I'm sure the ladies will give you a good price of a pair or a single as the shelter is unequipped to handle any volume of birds, let alone exotics such as there which need very regular attention. I am the only volunteer who will go near the poor guys or who knows anything about even the most basic of bird care, and so I feel it will be entirely up to me to rebuild the lives of these animals. Please contact the whitby humane society in ontario canada if you or anyone else who is a responsible bird owner has any interest.

Most birds won't accept a new mate if they have had a previous mate and have had a clutch or two. They will certainly be aggressive. You should remove immediately and put in separate cages side by side. If they cuddle next to one another..then try slowly and just a few minutes at a time. pay veryclose attention to them. see aggression, separate. they may not ever be suited for one another. blessings, wings
