You can add another budgie - no problem. I would not put themin the same cage. Let the new one have it's own cage and just place them side by side. If they want to get to be freinds - which I can't imagine them not doing - they will have someone to play with when you are not there. His food - check his foot real throughly to make sure no cuts/bumps or splinters. Feel his foot and toes to make sure smooth without any prickles from splinters. Then check the one foot against the other. Also check the ankles and see if any reaction of pulling. I don't know whether his anckle or his foot could be hurt - also strange enough birds do get arthritis - but first feel really good. Let me know. He could have sprined his leg also -

Wow! You've got an amazing story behind your birds! Way back then, handfeeding was really your thing! And what a large number of chicks you fed! I wouldn't be able to do that! Really! That is why your birds have really bonded with you. You were really confident at your skills - that is truly wonderful to hear. Wishing you many happy years with your pets. As for your outdoor birds, do they winter outdoors?

I hand fed them all - and as they got older they paired. At least some did. I set them up in an aviary and they could go inside or outside - lived in Florida at the time so really never cold. They could be indoors or they could be outside in the flight cages. They then had babies and I hand fed them too. I just loved it.

My Derbyan is called "Bombay". He is handsome and loving. I purchase him four years ago and I recommend this bird to the beginner, as well as the advance bird lover. He has a large vocabulary and can master tricks with ease. There are few articles written about the Derbyan Parakeet and I thank you for your information.

My parakeets are about 2 and a half years old (Male and Female) and the female hasn't laid eggs yet. Why is that?

Just because two birds are sexually mature - it doesn't mean they are ready to do "IT" You just have to be patient and when they are ready they will go through courtship and mating. It doesn't work on a humans time table just on their time table. I have had birds that were sexually mature but didn't actually mate for another 5 years. I have also had birds that I thought were no where near old enough that did mate. It is strictly on their time table.

ok I have 3 parakeets. I believe two are male and the other is female. Are you able to age them by there markings. I would really like to know how old they are. Thanks for any help in this matter

The cere - the area directly above the top of the upper beak and below the eyes will take on a bluish color for the male and a tanish color for the femlae when they reach sexual maturity.
That's around 6 - 12 months. I don't know of any other specific way on a parakeet. Birds age (obviously) and if the facial patch (such as on a macaw) is bare, the do show wrinkles. The feet on an older bird shows age just like on the hands of humans but you have to be around them a lot to really notice unless someone can point it out. Sorry

Hi I have recently got two golden rosella's, I believe they are male and female, they seem to be feeding each other, he is chasing her, and has been for a while now, I am not sure of their ages, could anyone tell me when they're ready to mate? We have put in a breeding box, she looks but has not gone in yet, they are in a very large cage, he seems to be bobbing his head and chasing her but she does not seem to want to know, I would appreciate some advice, as here in England there seems to be no answers to my questions, thank for reading my question. Love them they're so funny to watch, they love water crest as well as fresh fruit, happy happy happy.

Their breeding season is usually from August to January. The male feeding the female is a good sign that they are in the breeding mood. Watch them to see what behaviors they display - if they have a lot of chattering while shaking their tails and dropping their wings - that is a good sign that they are in the breeding ritual. Depending on how old they are, they will produce more or less eggs. They are not as fertile in their first year, but generally by the end of their second year they will be fully fertile and can lay up to 5 eggs. It takes about 3 weeks for the eggs to hatch once they are laid.
