I have a green winged Macaw named Weeza and he's roughly 18 years old. We rescued him 6 years ago from the children of his previos owner (who had passed away). They locked him in a dark garage and left him alone for weeks at a time with no human contact. He was obviously very tramatized from this experience and heart broken from losing his only companion of 12 years. The chilren told us Weeza was like a baby with their mother. He never bit anyone and he would sleep on his back under a blanket. At the time of the rescue he was very hostile and could not be handled. But within the first week he began to bond with my younger sister, giving her kisses and pruning her hair, but still tried to bite the rest of my family. It took a few months for him to get comfortable around everyone else, and now, six years later, he thinks he's the king of the castle. He has never gone back to the way he was before the rescue. He screams when he doesn't get his way and tries to bite you when you walk by his cage (he's thinks he's scary) but really he is just a big baby who demands a ton of loving. When he tries to be mean, I just give him lots of kisses and although he pretends not to like it, he secretly loves it!

My two year old severe macaw Bubbles passed away while I held him/her seizures. The pain I am experiencing is unbearable and one of my daughter's is devastated. I had everything in place in my avairy that was bird safe but even then, I feel responsible so I am awaiting the results of the necropsy. The obvious problem of slumping occurred on Sunday morning. I thought Bubbles had chills and seizures and I was correct. Although everything in the room was bird/childproofed since I have a total of 17 birds, Bubbles could have somehow chewed either a window sill (old) or a small hanging stained glass decoration ( I found Bubbles perched ontop and immediately removed Bubbles from it. We never left Bubbles unattended and she seemed to just be happy playing on playtop of the cages I own terrorizing or visiting the other birds! Bubbles knew how to inflect vocalization to sound so human and sweet since I have eight children he was learning all the dogs (4 JRs) and kids names and was so funny and darling. I am in deep mourning. I took her to the vet on Monday but first gave her amoxicciln broad treatment meds 30 mgs right away but with birds illness is masked moving a bird is risky. After the vet despite my gatoreraid, meds antiseizure meds the darling seized while I held her and screamed and the breath went.
The most difficult thing was letting her go from my arms and preparing her for necropsy but it had to be done. I placed in in a coffin in the extra frig I have in the basement with her favorite bell. Please love your macaw and please pray that she had some strange problem that I somehow did not cause her death thru inadvertently placing her in harm's way. I know people say its just a bird, to me she was my baby. Marma

I have a B&G named McDuff. He is about 34- 38 yrs old. He was given to my mother on my 5th birthday b/c his previous owners could not afford him. Now I am 21 and in a new home and he is still with me. McDuff calls me Moma and He calls himself Bird. He has his own sunroom which he Loves and never wants to leave. He follows me everywhere and I think they are the sweetest animals alive (on their good days). The wierd thing is he doesnt fly. So he is somewhat skinny on his chest, he just walks and climbs everywhere.

I got my hahns about one and a half months ago. I got him from a friend and breeder, Mrs.Alpine. She had a variety of baby birds for me to chose from but I knew Edd was the one for me because when my mom got off the air plane with him even though he could barely walk he crawled up my right arm. When i got him he was as bald as can be. Now he has a full set of feathers and can actually walk. Edd-which is his name-has a very intriguing personality and also has a very strange habit of twitching his wings. He became weened at the age of one month which is very unusual because the hahns macaw is usually weened at three months. Oh and when i wrote this he was biting the keyboard to death which is yet another bad habit. Despite this i think he's an awesome bird and I think the hahns macaw overall is a great bird. Right now Edd seems to be very happy; I know i am. He's been a very cool bird so far and I think any bird lover should get a hahns macaw no matter how experienced.

Hey everyone, with all the talk about the GW I finally have one coming home with me. It is waiting for the DNA to come back. Hopefully It will be here in the next two weeks. I had to order the cage first. Never having such a big bird before is very exciting to me. I have done so much research on this bird and want to have everything ready for it before it comes home. It is only four months old. Thanks, Ramona

My husband is "mated" to a male Military macaw named Oscar, who chose us (my hubby) at an adoption outreach. Since opening our home to this clown, I've searched for info and stories from other "Mili-mates" but am surprised how few are out there! I can't imagine our life without this challenging, nippy, cranky, funny and lovable guy!

I just bought my Hahn's Macaw, Everett, two days ago. I've been visiting him at the pet store he was in for the last month (traveling over an hour just to go see him) and I was so in love. I've had birds before, but this one is so different. He loves everyone he meets and is just a sweetie. He loves attention, but isn't very talkitive. He hasn't learned any words yet, but he mimics the sound of talking. He also likes to make the same clicky noises that I make. He's only 4 months and I can tell that he's already going to be a quick learner.
