I was adopted by a harlequin macaw. She was a rescue, taken from her previous home by the Health Dept due to neglect, starvation and deplorable conditions. She was lucky to still be alive and in pretty good shape -- many of the other animals were not. We had a bit of a rocky start given her history and my relative inexperience with birds; but we quickly got help through a local bird store, a bird behaviorist, an avian vet and websites like this one. Today she's a lovely bird, happy, talkative, well-adjusted, playful, naughty, noisy and NEVER hungry! Macaws are amazing birds and it's wonderful to see her happy and healthy -- such a difference from the sad, crying, frightenend, miserable bird who moved in with me a few years ago. I wouldn't recommend a rescue as your first bird -- I was successful, but very lucky I had access to great resources and able to devote a lot of time and money to her rehabilitation. Rescues are not "free" birds and can end up costing you much more than if you had purchased a hand-raised baby!

My MM Alex, is one of 4 parrots, 2 U2's, B&G. By far my MM is the sweetest and the least "loud". She was cage bound for 6 years prior to our rescuing her. We use a great hepa or better air filitration system. B&G is separate due to dust. Rest in birdroom. My MM loves all the birds and is an avid chatterer, singer and truly my favorite, as far as attitude. She is nippy with hubby and most men. She layed an egg last January (non-fertile). I rescue and rehab. NO BREEDING/BUYING/SELLING.

we have a 2yr old military macaw called tattie because she looked a scruff when we bought her at harrogate show. we bought her because she took an instant liking to my wife and knocked the other macaws off the perch to get across the cage to get to my wife and screamed when we walked away. we returned and tried the other side of the cage with the same result. so she had to come home with us and she still behaves the same way and nobody else will do when my wife is in. she also likes the grandchildren and will sit on the floor of the cage when they are playing and tries to join in. she is hand reared and we would not be without her.

I recently purchased a 7 month old harlequin macaw I named Mckala in Feb 2006. She has a GW father named Casino and a blue & gold Mother named Maggie. Her hatch date was June 8, 2005. I have a hahn's macaw as well, along with a sengal, and a conure. All are learning to talk. She is a very pretty bird and I am enjoying her and I am looking forward to getting her out this spring and showing her the outside.

Hi,I just purchased an eleven week old Harelquin. He's still being hand fed at Bird Jungle, so I'll have to wait another two weeks. I've been going over every couple of days so he'll start getting used to me. Two days ago, he sat in my lap for a good hour and we both loved every bit of it. There were a lot of kids coming into the store since they were off from school. so they were comming up and petting him along with me, and asking a whole lot of questions. I haven't yet picked a name, but, Bud and Ringo, come to mind. Already the bird is letting you kiss him, he is so loveable and I look forword to a lot of happy years.

My husband and I got a severe macaw a couple of years ago. Name-Ziggy. The poor bird had almost no feathers anywhere except the head and a few on the wings and a couple of tail feather. It was kept in a room alone because of all the noise. Since we got Ziggy almost all of the feathers have come back and the bird is very happy. Loves to watch tv with us and eat dinner with us. Still loves to scream too! A wonderful friend:0) We are also praying for Tamee B. and Mandy.

I have a 10 y/o Military Macaw that was taken from a home where she was neglected. I have to say...training her and getting her to come out of her shell has proven to be easier than I had though in the 3 months I've had her. She does talk...mimics a lot of things that she hears around our house. She is however, very tempermental and has only really bonded with me. My sister lives with me and she still snaps at her every time she walks past the cage. Overall, she has become one of the most amazing pets I have ever had the pleasure of sharing my home with. The only warnings I would give are these: they can get very loud...whistling, screeching, squaking, and it is not easy to spend time with them, and then walk away without a fight...they will scream! She loves to dance, and she talks only when she thinks no one is around...but her personality is amazing.
