I have a Harlequin and he is 2 years old July 2006. I Bought him when he was 8 weeks old. I've hand raised him! He is very intelligent and has an excellent vocabulary. Excellent talker! When he want's me he yells MAMAAAAA! He knows what he is saying and he knows when he is good and bad. He laughs really loud when he does something bad. My Blue and Gold Macaw will laugh really loud when she sees that he's in trouble. NEVER a dull moment in our house! These are great birds as pets, but stores that sale them don't tell you the health problems that come because they are crossbred. Really excellent pets stores will not sell any crossbreed birds as they know the problems that can arise! My Harlequin Macaw is one of many with health problems and it's not a pretty site when he is sick or has a serious allergy reaction to his foods. The Vet bills can become very costly. Please be educated on these birds, know what you are dealing with. These guys live 80 plus years. I hope the rest of you have very healthy Harlequins.

Hi All.
Well! my wife and I have just ordered our first Green winged macaw and should get it in about 2-3 months time and we are both very excited.
I used to keep Blue and Golds some years ago but my experience has dwindled over the years.
The more i read and try to find out about the Green wing, the more confused i become.
Some articles say that Green wings are not good talkers, and become aggressive and dominant, other people have written that their G/W is a brilliant talker(30 words +) small sentences, sings and dances and is so sweet and cuddly to all the family and don't believe anyone who says there not! I know this is probably down to training and constant socialization.
I was advised to read a certain book on parrot training by the breeder, who says the book is a great help, but the author says you should immediately trim the feathers as soon as you get the bird to avoid injury and also that its impossible to start to train the bird without doing so, but the breeder says NO! You must wait at least a year before trimming.

So! any comments on all the above or helpful suggestions or tips on living with a Green wing and making it part of the family and hopefully not just a one person bird from experienced owners would be very welcome.

Hello bird lovers. I have two macaws a scarlet male named Mariah(the person i got him from did not know he was a he) and a beautiful blue&gold female named Abigail. I just love to let these two birds out together on their play gym. They are very loud, but I just love it. My scarlet is five years old and a big cream puff. he loves to snuggle and not one bit nippy. My blue&gold is fourteen years old and loves to tell Mariah to shut up. I'm hoping to add another macaw to my flock soon.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR COMMENTS ON THIS SITE. WE HAVE CHOSEN A HAHNS MACAW & SHE IS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS & SO SWEET. WE MANAGED TO GET HER EARLY AS WE KNEW THE BREEDER, SO WE ARE FINISHING HAND FEEDING HER. THE HENS ARE LESS AGGRESSIVE THAN THE COCKS MOST OF THE TIME & HONEY IS SO CUDDLY. SHE MIMICS A FEW WORDS ALREADY- 'STEP UP', 'HELLO' & OF COURSE 'CUDDLE'. SHE IS NOW ONLY 9 WEEKS OLD! I SO RECOMMEND FINISHING HAND REARING BUT NOT ALL BREEDERS WILL LET YOU UNFORTUNATELY. IT IS SUCH A GREAT WAY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY TO BOND WITH THE BIRD. WE HAVE 2 CHILDREN AGED 3 & 8YRS & HONEY IS FINE WITH THEM. HOPE THIS HELPS ANYONE ELSE.

Our Yellow-nape is very cute. His name is Gershwin. He love to laugh, even though he doesn't talk much. He is not hand tame, unless he is away from his cage.

We rescued a macaw from a restaurant. Turns out he's a buffons. We would like to find a breeder to see if we can "farm" him out as we love him and would to see his species grow in strength.

Me and my boyfriend got a Harlequin macaw off the buy and sell about two months ago. We love im to death he's so playful. His name is Ruben and he waz suppost to be my boyfriend's pet but he likes me more. At first i didn't want anything to do with him, he just scared me at first but now i wouldn't get rid of him for anything. I'm glad my boyfriend bought him.. If anyone is looking into getting a parrot then i suggest you get a Harlequin macaw they are very frindly and playful and make good pets. As long as you are willing to spend at least four hours a day with them, well, all i can say is he is the greatest bird in the world....

My husband and I live in Roatan, Honduras. There were two Scarlet Macaws who were lost from their home and have been flying around the island. One kept coming onto our deck in the afternoons for attention and food. We loved having it. Last week, some island guys captured it and cut off its wings. It was then put in a parakeet cage and couldn't even turn around. We begged for us to have the bird. It was terribly unhappy and sqawking day and night. It quit eating. They finally gave us the bird and we built an outside aviary for it. The aviary is 8 feet high, 7 feet long, and 4 feet deep. We didn't want to cage it at all; it should be able to fly because that is what it is designed to do. But, for its safety, we had to put it inside of the aviary. We are sad it won't be able to fly again, but it seems happy and talks all the time, the squawking has stopped, and I spend several hours a day with it in its house. We have named it Bingo.

I have a Hahn's Macaw which I got when she was four months old. She has been DNA sexed.

While she can get pretty raucous, she is never a screamer unless it's in the morning and she is calling me out of the bed to rescue her. First she whistles and rings her bell furiously while in her cage, then she coo's once she's with the flock of me and my husband.

I find as long as Mika gets plenty of playing, cooing and talking time, she is a very quiet bird.

People want to have a pet bird without realizing this is a very intelligent animal and have emotions. If you do not plan to give your bird exactly what it requires to be healthy physically and emotionally, please do not buy a pet bird.
