Hi, I also have a Blue Thoated Macaw, and who ever said they are not loud is totally wrong, I have a 5 month old, that is adorable, we are currently teaching her to fly and she is a perfectionist at it. Since I was the one to hand feed her, she tends to fly to me, but my husband is currently feeding a Green Wing Macaw and whenever he his baby is getting fed, our BTM flies to him to be fed some baby food, which he still gives her as a treat. We named her Destiny, and she is the most affectionate macaw I have ever had. That is true about them. And about being intelligent, that is very true. At only 5 months and she has managed to separate the metal ring from where her food bowl goes in to, and manages to always popoput her bowl as to say "ok I'm done". Whoever has one of these macaws is a very special person.

Enjoy them.
Elsa

Having read what others say about their Greenwing experiences, I'll regale you in a brief about Chester... He just turned 4 on 4/24. I'm a 50-something guy and ambivalent about pets in general... but not about my boy. I met a man with two new Greenwings here in Jacksonville, Florida, they were just 8 weeks old at the time. This "breeder" is more like a wonderful ambassador to hookbill owners and breeders - ANYWHERE. Chester came home at 12 weeks and was handfed until about 7 months. I was wondering how long his handfeeding ritual was going to last, but one day he just decided he didn't want any more and weaned to pellets and "Poppa food" without skipping a beat. He's absolutely brilliant, a serious troublemaker and the happiest guy you've ever seen. He has about 40 English words, 4-5 Italian words and now knows a couple Russian, and uses them all in context perfectly. He and I are absolutely bonded and spend at least 4 hours a day in close contact. He's becoming more and more socialized. He'd rather run to Poppa than bite anyone, but accidents do happen. I suggest consulting a book by Mattie Sue Athan for a wealth of good information about bird behavior, it really helped me. RESCUE A BIRD and bring the pride back to human-hood! Best of luck!

I have a beautiful Severe macaw named Kahlua. She is so funny but is very posessive of me when it comes to other people. I also have a blue and gold named Simba and a Hyacinth named Caesar. She is best friends with Simba and they are so close that I have let them share the same cage. I never thought they'd get along because of the size difference but they do, and Kahlua is definately the boss. I think a Severe macaw is a great bird for anyone who wants to have a big macaw but either doesn't have the room or is scared to take one on. The Severes have all the personality, charm, and style that the larger macaws have but are a little bit more managable. I love my Severe to death, she is so darn cute and cuddly, and sharp as a tack too.

I have a female Buffons Macaw named Bella Rose. She is the most mellow of all my macaws ( I have six in a large heated aviary with many windows). She also is the best talker. Personally this is my favorite macaw. I know many people prefer the vibrant colors of the Green Wing, Scarlett and Blue and Gold. But the green feathers of the Buffons are so iridescent, that in the sunlight they are positively dazzling with many hues of golds and greens. I enjoy admiring her as well as playing with toys with her. She also goes for rides in my car, sitting on a perch which fits securely on the seat.

I also have a male severe macaw called Orin. We live in the Czech rep. He will turn 3 on 17.3.08, so very soon. Now he is a nice big boy but I got him in his 2nd month so he is like my third child. My two real children (8 and 4) love him very much and he loves them as well, but he fell in love with our new cat Suzy (main coon) two months ago.
She is sitting next to his cage and he is talking and singing to her all day long. He knows more than 10 words and sentences and many sounds. I dont know if she understands, but is listening well. I have wanted to buy a female macaw for him but now I am not sure if it's still a good idea. It's really curious and funny for all who come to visit us. In this country it is not very often to have this type of macaw,
so its good to know about others care of these magnificent birds.

I have a pair of Blue-throated Macaws, I was outside one day and heard them, and then I saw them flying. I went into the house to get them fruit and they were very hungry. They both came to me and I fell in love with them from the start. So my husband and I made some phone calls to find out who owned them, we did find out who owned them and they were in a rescue. The person that was feeding them turned her back and out they went. Well, it took some time to get them but now they are living with us and our 4 Rat Terriers. I was told they tested for PDD. They are fine now but they will always half to be tested. I did adopt them both as I did not want them to be apart. They are 5 years and 6 years old. I was told they were both female, well one is a male, and if them do by chance breed we can not let the eggs hatch because of the PDD. This breaks my heart, but we not letting the eggs hatch if they have any at all. I Love them both. The Male is a lot nicer then the Female, I was told she has been through a lot. They have all the love and food and toys and I just keep working with them. I would not want to be without them. They were sent to us for a reason and I will not let them go without love. These are wonderful Birds. I love all animals but Teacup the male and Boie the female are like my children and I am blessed to have them. Also, have your bird checked, this is a very hard diease to treat. They are very lucking to still be here. Thanks for reading and I have enjoyed reading all your comments.

We have a 4 year old Severe Macaw. Her name is Winston! She is named Winston because the breeder told us "she" was a male! Then we suspected she was a female and had her DNA tested and yes, she is a female! She is the funniest bird we have (we have 8 birds, four of them are Macaws). She loves to twist her head around in a figure 8. She talks very well, and seems to know much more than she is willing to say, because she will surprise us constantly with new phrases that we had no idea that she could say! One day we were talking to the other Macaw we have in the same room where she lives. We were saying "I love you" to the other Macaw (a Military). All of a sudden Winston blurted out, "I love you!" loud and clear as a bell! She had never said that before, and she has never said it again!! LOL. She is a riot. She loves to play Peek a Boo and will run right over to play with me when I approach her cage. She is adorable and we love her so much!

I have been owned by a Ruby for over a year, and find the combo of a greenwing dad and a scarlet mom the most wonderful I have encountered. If you want a beautiful loving bird that can have a mean streak (playful and sarcastic) this is the right bird. They are expensive to buy and to keep, but all macaws are. Mine is the most social macaw I have ever encountered and tends to be a "velro bird", so be prepared to spend LOADS of time with this gentle giant.
