I absolutely love my military macaw named Joey. He really takes up to me loves to sit beside me doesn't bite me he even gives me kisses. I wanted to know where its supposed to be white between his eye and beak why is it red what does my Joey need.

They blush. So where it is frequently white, it takes on a red color. White normally but when pet, happy, having a good time or being kissed, they blush. Now, if you mean the nostril area is a vivid red, I would check the nostrils for anything embedded. Sounds nuts but had a macaw that somehow put millet in his nostril.

It turns red with arrousal or aggression. My Petes turns red when happy and when mad.

Our milatary macaw turns red when I try to pet her, when my husband has her I do not think that is blushing I think she doesn't like me. Sometimes she lets me pet her but I'm scared she's going to take a chunk out of me, what can I do to get rid of my fear for her?
  • Terrie Hein - 2014-05-26
Well then I think our milatary macaw doesn't like me then cuz she turns red most of the time I go near her and then sometimes she lets me pet her. I think we both have to earn each other's trust, may take time I guess. I don't really know.

My husband suprised me one morning and brought home Rocco, a military macaw. He had thirty years of experience with large birds. His brother has a blue and gold which I was terrified of. Every holiday he would sit on the perch and would scream when I would walk by, scaring the day lights out of me. He disliked women, even my sister-in-law, so I was not very fond of Rocco at first. I was actually speechless, knowing the bird should out live me. Now, he is my best friend. My husband even says I love the bird more than him. He is so cute. When I wake in the morning, he is so calm, he lifts his leg and shows his me one wing and says Momma. Throughout the day, he says Mom and if I don't answer him, you can hear him getting excited. He will get a little louder saying Ma then screams Ma if I don't answer him. He hangs upside down, dances, and will fly to my arm with an up-up command. His new saying is 'awl', from when he accidentally bit me (love bites). This bird has bonded with me. He really doesn't want anything to do with my husband (LOL). Absolutely, my best friend!

I just got a calico, its name is calypso. It is such a sweet loving macaw, it loves being with people so much that it hates to return to its cage. He will lay on this back so he can receive belly rubs. I use to have a U-too but this bird is even more affectionate. I also own a catalina that is very sweet and gentle and an excellent talker. I think my favorite though, would have to be the calico.

My Maui Sunset Macaw, Uno, is the sweetest bird in the world. He adores everyone, including my quaker parrot Quincy, my moluccan cockatoo Ray, and my two abyssinian cats, Abby and Annie. Uno especially adores my cats, even better than any of my birds. His favorite food would have to be corn-on-the-cob, green beans, and strawberries. He doesn't exactly have a cage; he instead has a million playstands around the house. I am so glad that Uno, as well as my other birds, are in my life.

Hi Sally, Just had questions for you about the sunset macaws. Are they hybrids, And if they are do they live the same age as other macaws? I will be out of work because of my spine and I really want a macaw, my kids will be at school and I have had lots of birds throughout my life but I want to make sure I am getting a loving bird. If you can give me any advice I'd appreciate it. Thank you, Rena.

Hi there.
I have an Illiger macaw, I have had him for 3 months. I adopted him from a lady that
could not take the noise. He is a wonderful bird and I love him to bits. I open his cage
and he climbs down the cage and waddles over to me on the couch. When he wants to come out of his cage he says, "come now, come on boy", and he does not stop until I open his cage. His name is Zuse, and he chops up his wooden toys like a chain saw.
