I too have a shamrock ... He is a true lover, he falls to sleep in my arms and is always very excited to see me. He mimicked cats, dogs, chickens, afflack duck. He is a wonderful bird that likes your fingers in his mouth, he has never bitten me.

We have a 4 year old Military Macaw. She is very outgoing, clowny and silly. She loves making me laugh. When I start laughing, she'll do a whispery laugh. True to their reputation, Militaries can very much be nippy, but ours was raised with boundaries and she's very respectful with her beak. They are not a bird for everyone. Her call is more shrill than our Blue and Gold's, so be prepared for that. She's an okay talker. We're still working on reinforcing her existing vocabulary.

I happen to LOVE the Military. The few I have known are very active and need lots of toys to keep that beak out of trouble! They also like to hang upsidedown in their cages like bats. They are a riot. We love our girl.

I absolutely love my military macaw named Joey. He really takes up to me loves to sit beside me doesn't bite me he even gives me kisses. I wanted to know where its supposed to be white between his eye and beak why is it red what does my Joey need.

They blush. So where it is frequently white, it takes on a red color. White normally but when pet, happy, having a good time or being kissed, they blush. Now, if you mean the nostril area is a vivid red, I would check the nostrils for anything embedded. Sounds nuts but had a macaw that somehow put millet in his nostril.

It turns red with arrousal or aggression. My Petes turns red when happy and when mad.

Our milatary macaw turns red when I try to pet her, when my husband has her I do not think that is blushing I think she doesn't like me. Sometimes she lets me pet her but I'm scared she's going to take a chunk out of me, what can I do to get rid of my fear for her?
  • Terrie Hein - 2014-05-26
Well then I think our milatary macaw doesn't like me then cuz she turns red most of the time I go near her and then sometimes she lets me pet her. I think we both have to earn each other's trust, may take time I guess. I don't really know.

My husband suprised me one morning and brought home Rocco, a military macaw. He had thirty years of experience with large birds. His brother has a blue and gold which I was terrified of. Every holiday he would sit on the perch and would scream when I would walk by, scaring the day lights out of me. He disliked women, even my sister-in-law, so I was not very fond of Rocco at first. I was actually speechless, knowing the bird should out live me. Now, he is my best friend. My husband even says I love the bird more than him. He is so cute. When I wake in the morning, he is so calm, he lifts his leg and shows his me one wing and says Momma. Throughout the day, he says Mom and if I don't answer him, you can hear him getting excited. He will get a little louder saying Ma then screams Ma if I don't answer him. He hangs upside down, dances, and will fly to my arm with an up-up command. His new saying is 'awl', from when he accidentally bit me (love bites). This bird has bonded with me. He really doesn't want anything to do with my husband (LOL). Absolutely, my best friend!

I just got a calico, its name is calypso. It is such a sweet loving macaw, it loves being with people so much that it hates to return to its cage. He will lay on this back so he can receive belly rubs. I use to have a U-too but this bird is even more affectionate. I also own a catalina that is very sweet and gentle and an excellent talker. I think my favorite though, would have to be the calico.

We bought a ILLeger's macaw in December 2013, he was 6 weeks. He is adorable, we hand feed him, he walks around in the house, sits in his cage and playstand, sits on our shoulder, is very loveable, he eats everything, fruit, his pallets and seeds. But it is now 9 days that he started to moan, while he is eating, walks around, and even when he is sitting on our shoulders, he is moaning non stop, till he goes to sleep. He stopped playing with his toys, only wants to eat seeds (nothing else), and where he sits, he sits and moans, only goes down to eat and drink water. I'm irritated with his moaning, it's from when he wakes up till he goes to sleep! Can anyone help me please! What did I do wrong for Marley to moan non stop!
