You could just start by calling all the major breeders that advertise in the back of Bird Talk.
Or you could look up on the Internet to see if anyone advertises Hybrid birds for sale or again any large breeder. Many breeders feel very strongly that hybrids should not occur. So some breeders will not discuss a hybrid but some will. Be patient and just keep asking.

I own & operate a small bird store in Allentown, Pa for the last 26 yrs.
One of my breeders has sunset macaws but they are rather pricey, 2000.00 is the price if you're interested.

Or you could go directly to a breeder - potentially the one this store uses. Exotic Baby Birds of Englewood Florida breeds these and they sell them for $1500 to consumers directly. Save $500 and buy toys.

HI Ashley, DO NOT buy a bird from Fancy Feathers in Caldwell NJ!! I live in WI and paid for in full and was promised a maui macaw 7 month old female. They kept her and sent me the wrong bird! They are scammers! NO DNA certificate for the maui I was suppose to get and had a yellow head, this one has a dark head. Good luck. If anyone knows where this bird is please please call me thank you! 9207445752

We are owned by a 13 year precocious, mischeivious, hilarious, bratty harlequin. She's got a great sense of humor and rules this roost. We love her madly.

Great creature, but .......VERY high maintenance. While quite lively and entertaining, they require--no, demand-- a great deal of time, care and attention. It's like having a 4 year old under foot at all times. This includes both the good and bad behaviors. So if you aren't ready to engage in a full time relationship, this is not the bird for you.

That being said our little "monster" (her name is Spanish for a mythical boogie man monster) is truly a great addition to our family. FYI: we do not have children in our home. She knows all our cats by name and calls for them. Often telling on them when they have done something wrong. Or blaming them for something she has done wrong. One afternoon she had opened up the lock on her cage and quietly ventured into the bathroom where she proceeded to chew off an entire corner of the door! Created a hole the size of a large fat cat. When I found her, I said "What happened here?" She said, "The kitties."

Recently we had to travel overnight and left her alone. Mind you, overnight only. She was stocked up with plenty of food, water, toys and classical music playing softly. When we got home, she had no voice. We took her to the vet to be sure she wasn't sick. She wasn't. As it turns out she screamed herself hoarse. Needless to say we enjoyed the respite from the earsplitting noise she shares with us.

I like the way you started out with 'We are owned by'. Haha We, too are owned by a Harlequin Macaw named Harley. She is 21 years old, and is the life of the household. She loves my daughter dearly, and is her great protector. I even took her to school once for 2nd grade halloween party. She loves children, all of them got to pet her. She also cannot stand when people get loud - no fighting in our house. Haha I really enjoy talking to other people who have friends like our Harley. Thank you!

I HAVE A PAIR OF BLUE THROATS THAT ARE 11 YEARS OLD, AND THEY ARE NOW FINALLY STARTING TO BEAK FEED EACH OTHER! I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER BREEDERS WHO HAVE SUCCESSFUL PAIRS AND THEY SAY THAT THESE ARE VERY HARD TO BREED. THEY USUUALLY START BREEDING AROUND 10-12 YEARS OF AGE! A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR MACAW! AND ARE VERY DIFFICULT PARENTS, YOU WILL FINDING YOURSELF INCUBATING THE EGGS! THEY ARE ALSO VERY JEALOUS BIRDS! THEY CAN BOND TO ONE PERSON AND SOMETIMES WILL ATTEMPT TO ATTACK THE OTHER PERSON IF YOU INTERUPT THEM! I HAVE BEEN BREEDING BIRDS FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND SINCE OWNING THESE MACAWS AM VERY SURPRISED AT THE DIFFERENCE SAY TO THE B&GS! BUT ON A POSITIVE NOTE THEY ARE SO BEAUTIFUL AND IF YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON HANDLING THEM YOU WILL BE FINE! THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE BLUE THROATS! I BELEIVE THEY WILL BE ON THE ENDANGERED LIST IN THE WILD FOR SOMETIME BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTY OF RAISING THEIR YOUNG! THANKS

I wondered for years what my macaw "Carmen" was; I was told when I got her that she was a Catalina macaw and I remember thinking that she didn't look like any Catalina I'd ever seen. I saw her parents (her mother is a Military and her father is a Scarlet) and I asked the breeder if "Catalina" was also a name applied to a Military/Scarlet cross and he said it applied to all hybrid macaws. I didn't quite believe this but didn't give it any more thought until I ran across this page. I can't believe how much "Tonya" looks like Carmen! They could be sisters!! Thanks for helping give my girl the right identity! :)

I absolutely love my military macaw named Joey. He really takes up to me loves to sit beside me doesn't bite me he even gives me kisses. I wanted to know where its supposed to be white between his eye and beak why is it red what does my Joey need.

They blush. So where it is frequently white, it takes on a red color. White normally but when pet, happy, having a good time or being kissed, they blush. Now, if you mean the nostril area is a vivid red, I would check the nostrils for anything embedded. Sounds nuts but had a macaw that somehow put millet in his nostril.

It turns red with arrousal or aggression. My Petes turns red when happy and when mad.

I have a 1 1/2 year old Harlequin named Dolly. She is drop dead beautiful and has rich deep colors, she is very intelligent and has
a huge vocabulary. She knows many words and can say serveral small
sentences. I bought her when she was 3 months old. She is very bonded
to me and wont let anyone else touch her. She does like men but only
if they have a beard or mustache, otherwise they can forget it.
Harlequins are so hard to find.Only a handful of people breed them and they usually get deposits on the eggs before they even hatch. I recently brought mine to a huge bird show in Orlando to have her microchipped. I had a crowd around me the whole time. I could have sold her 6 times over. She gathered a crowd at every turn. Luckily I would never part with her for any amount of money

This is george again. Over 2 years later and paco has come a long way. He is an outgoing lovable goober who adores my wife, and if she isn't around likes me. God forbid I get near her or him though, if they are together, he will rip me apart. But for the most part he is a great bird. Definitely not for the first time bird owner, like others have commented. It took us 2 years too get him handable and trustworthy, and yes he is very strong.

My first macaw was a Harlequin. They are awesome birds with wonderful personalities. If I ever got a hybrid macaw again, I would defintely get a Harlequin.

My military macaw bobbs his head like a chicken on our hands/arms etc., does anyone know what this means? He's not hurting anyone when he does this but just very curious when and why he does this..

Yep it is normal. They bob their head up and down. They sorta bump you with their beak which doesn't hurt and even bump you in the head with theirs. They are playing and it is fun.
