Rodriguez Paulina - 2011-10-26 I have a Peach faced lovebird and she just laid three eggs but I don't have a male bird. Is the male bird the one that has to sit on the eggs or does she? Because she is not sitting on them.

Charlie Roche - 2011-10-26 They usually lay 4 - 5 eggs and won't sit them until all the eggs are laid. The eggs are obviously infertile but don't just remove them. She will just lay more eggs and run into a possible calcium shortage. Let her sit the eggs if she wants for the 20 days or so and then just toss them out. But let her sit them for the 3 weeks if she wants.
Crystal - 2011-10-24 I have a peached faced lovebird and a blue masked lovebird that are mates and have just had some eggs. I JUST read that your not suppposed to pair these two up. Are their eggs not going to be fertile? Please help I hope I didn't set them up for failure :(

Charlie Roche - 2011-10-24 You are fine and they are happy so don't worry. Many people feel that birds - or any pet/companion/animal should never be cross bred. It is a belief. They state that in the wild (or under natural circumstances because of geography) it would not happen. Richard Shubot owned ARBC and was a major aviculturist and let birds fly free. They do cross breed. Love birds cross breed but some folks don't like it as they want the breed to remain pure. Second paragraph - your lovebirds are new at this as I take it. Many breeders would tell you that the first couple of clutches are for free. In other words, maybe mom and dad will know what to do and maybe they won't. Maybe they will accidently break the eggs, Maybe mom knows how to sit and feed or maybe she gets confused. It is a learning process and sometimes they get it right first time but sometimes not. So enjoy, relax and keep your fingers crossed but if the eggs aren't fertile or don't hatch - don't be discouraged. A suggestion is to place a little perch by the nest box so they have someplace to sit and go in and out of the box so they don't break eggs accidentally.
Maria - 2011-10-13 I recently aquired a female lovebird as a friend for my little one. Both are peach faced, one is green with blue tail and black tipped wings, the other is yellow. The yellow one (female) is very aggresive, and bites. I've had her for 2 weeks now, showered her with attention etc. but she still bites, and she bites the little green one too. How do I go about to let them become friends, or even to 'bond'?

Charlie Roche - 2011-10-13 It isn't unusual that a female will pick on a fella -- just give them some time and let them be. They will probably work out who is boss and when. If you want them to 'bond' you don't necessarily have to try and bond with the female. Maybe she was hand fed - maybe not and you can just take her to neutral territory and start feeding her with yiour hand and tame her. However, if you want them to bond and have babies - then just keep one oof the babies for a pet instead.

Jasmine Brough Hinesley - 2011-09-25 If your lovebirds, Agapornis roseicollis, are not getting any better after 2 months of having diarrhea and treating them for it, you may want to consider taking one of them to the vet. A vet may be able to pinpoint better exactly what is causing the diarrhea. You may consider varying their diet, and reducing the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables they get daily to see if that makes a difference. Another thing to check is to make sure they are getting clean water every day and clean out and disinfect their water dishes daily. Also, if you are not already, you may want to include vitamin supplements to their food and/or water, which can generally be purchased at pet stores. If you wish, you can check out the general Lovebird Care page.
Charlie Roche - 2011-09-25 I was baby sitting two macaws for a friend and he told me they had diarrhea. I had them for two weeks and they did not have diarrhea. He picks them up and asks me and I told him all was fine and he said that they had diarrhea for a good couple of months. I asked him what he was feeding them and he told me and all was well except he was giving them each about 10 - 15 grapes a day as they loved grapes. I told him that a grape to a bird is like a human eating a whole melon. Love birds love fruit but think 1/2 grape to a Lovebird is you eating 1/2 a melon. All the fruit and even sometimes vegetables (depending on the vegetable) will give your guys diarrhea and could get dehydrated. Scrambled eggs is a good thing - leave in the shell for extra protein. Little chicken or tuna is a good thing. Good luck but probably diet.
milad zurub - 2011-09-05 I have 4 rosy faced lovebird and I don't know which ones are the female and which are the male and I don't know if they are all males or females. I bought the first 2 they slept in the same nestbox and they use to preen each others head and body. Now I bought the other 2 which use to be all in the same cage in the store when I put them all in the cage they start fighting over nest box. I added 2 more nest boxes. The first night the new one of them slept in a nest box and the old 2 slept in another and the last slept outside although there was an empty nest and the next night all 3 slept in one nest box and now one of the 3 is preening the other 2 and the 4th is still sleeping outside ps: the new ones are always fighting like hell any help how can I tell the female from the male?

Charlie Roche - 2011-08-11 Yep, you sure can. There is no reason at all you can't have two birds of the same sex together for fun and friendship. At some poing - just possibly and porably a long time away - one or theother just might lay an egg - or both. Just put the egg in a butter dish with some paper twoel for cushioning. They might sit it for a little while but will probably just get bored with it. Don't remove the egg - let them have it till they are bored. This is somehthing that may never happen at all. Nothing to worry about and perfectly normal. All gals have eggs.
Laurel Hartley - 2011-08-11 I just found out that my bird is a male. Two males will still get along ?
Charlie Roche - 2011-08-12 Two males will get along as well. You shouldn't have any problems and much company and fun.
Kasey - 2009-12-15 I have had a peach faced lovebird for one year, starting the christmas of 2009. He is the sweetest pet I have ever had. He has learned to do several tricks such as give kisses, play dead, and poop on command.

Amy - 2010-05-25 How did you train him? We just got a female lovebird for my son, he is very nice, but tends to nibble once in a while, and bite when you try to take her out of the cage sometimes too. Any advice would be appreciated.
hannah - 2010-06-29 Really? I want a peach faced love bird and are gonna get one in October this year but I'm scared about how to train it can you maybe give me some tips?
sharon - 2010-12-21 When my son got his lovebird (single bird) from a pet store, the bird was very afraid of fingers. We suspect that this was because of people sticking their fingers into the cage. My son wore socks on his hands whenever he would try to handle the bird. It took a couple of weeks to coax the bird out of the cage, but millet helped. After a couple more weeks, he took off the socks and always handled him with fingers held together. Then, once the bird got used to the hand with closed fingers, eventually, he let him handle him with open fingers.
annie - 2011-07-29 To get them out I open the cage door pretend to leave and let them climb out its easier and they will be happier. They won't want to come out if they are forced. Their last cage experience might be their last and next time they come out they will enjoy it more no need to thank me lol
christina - 2011-07-17 My boys babysitter has 2 peach faced lovebirds that have had 6 babies hatch. She has offered me one but I'm not sure if getting one is a good idea. Would it be a good idea to get a pair that are related? What if they mated?

Charlie Roche - 2011-07-18 You can have 1 lovebird and give it lots of attention and many do that. I think it is more fun to have two and then I don't worry if they are getting enough attention cuz theyhave eachother also. Unless they have been closely bred, should breeding occur, it would be fine.

The Peach-faced Lovebird is a beautiful 'pocket parrot'. They come in a variety of colors and are the most commonly kept lovebirds!
