I have 4 ringneck doves. I see them mate all the time, but they haven't laid any eggs for the past two years. I feed them wild bird feed and noticed they eat everything but the milo seed. Could anyone help me find out why my doves don't lay eggs?

On this past easter 2014 I got a call at 8:30 in the morning from a friend, I didn't answere it cause I was tired, then he texted me so I figured it was important. The text read there was a white dove in the school parking lot so I got there as fast as I could because I had been looking for a pet white dove. So I got there and my friend was sitting next to it, I must have spooked it because it flew at me then crashed in his garage. I caught it then his mom saw another one by their fence. I caught that one also. So it's a week later and the one I thought was the male built a nest in the nesting box and the one I thought was a female won't nest yet, so they both laugh, bow, coo and coo but the one I think is the female has a scratchy coo, not as smooth so I am expecting eggs, thinking it's a pair of doves by my research, and she still wouldn't nest so I provided a higher nesting box for her but the 'male' has been sitting in it and acting very territorial of the nest. Could he be a she? Then the female has been guarding him, not sure him is a he could she be a he and when will she lay?

I bought my diamond dove 6 years ago. I had raised society finch's forever before that, and all but one had passed away. So, I put the last old lady in with my diamond dove since they are both such sweet birds they got along very well, cuddling all the time. I knew the day would come when my society finch would be no more, this happened yesterday morning. I have been trying to give the dove extra attention, cooing to her and speaking softly. I am afraid she is heartbroken, I know I am. I'm thinking of purchasing another society finch for company. I just can't stand her being alone. Any suggestions for any other birds that might be a good companion? I no longer want to breed birds but if I got another female dove would it be ok? Any input would help me and my diamond dove.

Last night we found a small mourning dove, she seems to have no balance, her wings seem fine and she will wrap her feet around our finger. Not sure of age, but she does not seem to have tail feathers. Right now she is eating wild bird seed and will drink water, will she eat bananas? Or dried cranberries? That is all i have right now, will go to pet store and see about some grit and maybe a better feed for her. I also have some lettuce, would that be ok for her?   any help would be greatly appreciated!   thank you tina cooke, conway. Sc

I don't think bananas are in their usual diet, but it probably won't hurt to try. Dried cranberries probably won't hurt either. Lettuce should be fine. Definitely get a good quality seed mix and grit. Good luck!

Hey! I have 2 diamond doves that have laid eggs and now I have a brother and sister, from the same litter. What happens if they mate? I don't want them to become sexually active in their cage and have the new babies that have birth defects. Is it bad for them to mate, will anything be wrong with their babies? Thank you!

Generally you do not need to worry about there being birth defects or anything of that nature with birds of the same family mating. I wouldn't worry about it, unless you just simply don't want more birds!

My female sacred (white) dove laid 2 eggs within the past two days. I was so excited until this evening when I seen that one had fallen to the bottom of the cage and shattered open. I am devastated because I don't know how this could have happened. Can anyone tell me if momma will lay another egg to replace this one that fell so she will still have two to sit on? I have 3 doves in this cage. Two sacred white doves (male and female) and a male ring neck who is the baby daddy cause he is the attentive one to the momma. Is it possible that the other male sacred dove kicked the egg from the nest when momma was taking a break sitting on the egg to stretch her wings?

It's hard to say what happened to that egg, you would have to observe the birds to actually know. Still, doves can be aggressive during breeding season, as well as somewhat territorial, so it's best to have just a pair in the cage.

Hi, i have 2 diamond doves. One is white in color and the other is sort of bluish. The person at the pet store said they are young and would look like other doves when they grow up. I would like a pair but i am still unable to determine their gender. I dont know their ages. Can someone help me in finding out their ages. And how long will it take to be sure of their genders. By the way i bought them a week ago. :) thanks

They told you they are 'young' but you'll need to ask the people you got them from for an exact age if you need one.  They can be sexed at about 6 months of age and the 'Breeding/Reproduction' section above provides answers to your questions.

My female dove has laid an egg and she is holding her head beneath her body is this normal? She shakes a bit too. I was wondering if maybe she is getting ready to lay another egg. If anyone has info please contact me at weezie48@hotmail.com. Thank You.
