We found Ginger 3 years ago with a broken wing from a bullet. My son and I brought her to many places around town and none would treat her. They all told us to euthanize her. When I explained the word to my son he was devastated. The look on his face broke my heart, so I told him I would call our vet. This wonderful man cleaned and taped her wing down to heal, and sent us on our way with antibiotics and a return appointment for the following week. When we arrived, he had a look of pure amazement on his face! It seems that he had given Ginger less than a 20% chance of surviving that week. Not only had she survived, but she was "a whole new bird". She wasn't expected to be able to fly again. She can for short distances. We communicate with each other with coos, bell ringing (you should see her go), and a few other sounds she makes (I can't describe). At times she will stand at the door of her cage face to face with me and we'll make noises back and forth and have a real conversation! I am glad I invested the time and money in healing this beautiful bird. I thank God for our talented vet and our discussion about all God's creatures deserving a chance!

It is worth it-I had my mourning dove 13 years. She had few feathers as a baby and was about to be the neighbors cats breakfest. She was always the sweetest thing.

I have just been given a white dove and he is the most affectionate, soppy little thing I've ever had, better than all the other birds I've owned! He fell asleep on my shoulder earlier, all snuggled in against my neck! I would recommend doves as pets to anyone!

Hi these doves do better as single pairs in longer rather than high cage and a bit of privacy.

I was very surprised to see my OGO's pictured on your site. The Old German Owl is a gentle or somewhat tame pigeon. I still raise the Tail Marked variety of Owl's, along with my Valencian Figurita's & Barb's. If not for my love of these birds, retirement wouldn't be much fun. In my 70's & still enjoying my hobby to the fullest. Doug Smith of Dr2Lofts in TN. USA.

To: Lynn Smith: We live in Manhattan, NY. For the past 4 weeks we have enjoyed the company of a smallish fawn dove. It is getting close to winter and I want to put out some type of winter habitat for her. We are in a high rise, 19th floor, and I would like to put some type of winter house for her, against the building (warmer), and provide for seeds and water. Any suggestions as to type of cote, house, etc? Thanks for any help.

How did you make out in Santa Fe?

I have a gorgeous white dove named Darryl we thought she was male until she started laying.
Apparently all female birds including chickens lay but need males to fertilize the eggs, so no they don't have chicks in them unless there is a male.

Well, it means she's ready for a mate, if you don't have one for her yet:-)

I think doves make wonderful pets. I was in a fast food parking lot and saw a blue jay attacking a young dove. I shooed the blue jay away and picked up the dove, got an empty box from some delivery men and carried it home. His (or her, not really sure) neck was bloody where he was attacked, so I cleaned it and applied some antibiotic ointment and fed him. I intended to keep him only long enough to get him well and would release him in the house daily to allow him to exercise. When I tried to release him a couple of weeks later, he wouldn't leave, just sat on a branch at my eye level looking at me. I kept him for a number of years before he passed, he was incredibly tame and would perch on a head, arm, shoulder, even ride on a remote control truck. He was very gentle and had a beautifully soothing coo.

Just as well that he would not leave. Releasing doves into the wild, results in death almost every time. They are prey animals to every predator out there, as the blue jay demonstrated clearly.
