I have two sun conures. Both are rescues. As numerous bird books explain, a rescued bird is hard to handle since you have to teach them all the proper behavior and skills they needed to learn from their first owners.
My first sun, Charlie (one of the reasons I HAD to buy him), was a big biter, a big screamer, etc. Basically he was one of those birds that most people would just as soon strangle than look at. He bonded with me within a week. It took me a month of anguish and pain to rid him of excessive screaming and other bad habits.
My second sun, Petout (pronounced Pee-too), was given to me by my landlady who was a single mom with two kids and very little time for a bird. Petout was a womans bird. She hated men and bit them if they ever got near. I was amazed. It only took me about a day to stop her from biting me. Her behavior tends to be better than Charlie.
Both birds are very loving and sociable now. Aside from occasional screaming (when someone walks by my window) and annoying beeps (imitating the microwave), they are fantastic. I find that suns only get noisy when excited, scared, or surprised in some way. Otherwise they are VERY quiet. Petout has a cute little meep meep when shes sociable. And Charlie has a goofy little squEEeeEEK that imitates a sqeaky door and gives TONS of kissy noises when strangers are about. When Charlie knows hes been bad, or is angry at something, he shouts no (the only clear word he speaks) and grumbles. Thats about it for noise. I love these birds more than anything. The are absolutely my children and I will always treat them as such.
I HAVE AN 8 MONTH OLD SUN NAMED BLAZE. HE IS VERY SOCIABLE AND LOVES TO CUDDLE AND NIBBLE ON EARS. STRANGELY ENOUGH, HE WILL NOT LET ANYONE STROKE OR TOUCH HIS BACK. HE WILL SQUACK LIKE YOU ARE HURTING HIM. HIS VOCABULARY CONSISTS OF THREE WORDS- HELLO, UH-OH, AND WHEN YOU CALL HIS NAME, HE WILL SAY HUH? HE IS A FUN PET AND WILL GO TO EVERY MEMBER OF MY FAMILY, EVEN MY 5 YEAR OLD, WHO IS HIS FAVORITE PERSON NEXT TO ME. THEY SAY THAT MOST SUNS TEND TO SCREAM, BUT MY BLAZE ONLY DOES 2 TIMES A DAY- EARLY MORNING AND AT BEDTIME. SUNS ARE WONDERFUL PETS, IF YOU GIVE THEM PROPER CARE AND ATTENTION.
I have a sun conure (chiko) and he is very playful. He loves toys and climbing. He also loves coming out of his cage. He is about 8 months old and has started talking and says what up and hello.
I have a Sun Conure named Mally, he is not the nicest bird. He attacks people if he is out when they walk in, but he is very good to me and my boyfriend. Mally was given to me and I think that those people were not very nice to him. He wont let me clip his toes or wings and does not like to be rubbed under his wings. I am guessing he is about 2 in a half years. old the lady who gave him up in August of 2003 said he was about a year old. Mally wont eat fruit or vegies. he doesnt like many toys only his wooden ones with bells. no one who comes over is mean to him, I wouldnt put up with it. he is my baby so I dont understand why he attacks people. He also trys to attack my cat. its kinda funny to see him flap his wings at the cat and get mad at her. he gets lots of attention I just dont understand Mally. He is my first bird. My parents have a blue and gold macaw and he just turned 1. he is so cool and friendly. I wish My Mally was nicer and talked. he wont talk for nothing. he is always free to go in or out of his cage when people aint over and the cat is outside. he loves to walk with me on the treadmill and do dishes and lay in bed and watch TV.
I have a Sun Conure named Kiwi. She is very tame as well. Unfortunately, she does not talk at all! I wish I could teach her to talk. Kiwi is very affectionate. She loves to give kisses, cuddle under my chin, crawl in my shirt, and nibble my ear. When I laugh she likes to laugh too; that is about the only noise she makes, besides yelling for attention. The funniest thing she does is peep her head around the corner when I am in another room. She is always curious as to where I am in the house.
Fellow Bird Fanciers,
I love my little Jo Bird. She is a 7 yr old Sun Conure. She can say about 15-20 words and make several sounds. She is on the top of the literal "pecking order" around our house. She has her bluff in on husband, kids, dogs and the cat...They make wide circles around her cage. She loves to show off and attention. She is an excellent doorbell, telephone and alarm clock. I never have to worry about any one sneaking up on me. She is a watch bird. If you are considering a conure as a pet- bear in mind they can be very LOUD! Patience and ability to endure screaming bouts are a must but well worth it in entertainment and returned affection.
Sunny in Texas
To "mongo" although i have heard conures are some what terriorial my conure lives with another bird, a cockatiel, and they are the best of friends. give it a try and see how they get along.
we just got our sun conure. his name is max and he is our first one. i love him so much. he gives me kisses and is so funny when you make him mad, he squaks and acts like he is a big bird and trys to give you a love bite. he is so pretty to. he has a yellowish orange red head with blue/green wings and body, along with tail and he has checkered pants that are red and green. he is such a sweet bird and we are so happy to welcome him in to our new home.
I have a very friendly sun conure his name is Connunbutses. It is a funny name but I like it very much. He is very tame, he will lie upside down and play dead in my hand, he says "ouch" and mutters all sorts of other noises. I have quite a few birds but he is my overall favourite bird.
My sun conure is 5 months old. His name is Fruitloop. He already says papa and hello. He hardly ever screams except when he gets real excited or hears another bird outside. Sometimes he calls in the morning when we get up or just before bedtime. Most of the other sun conures I have seen scream alot more than he does.
