KNinVA - 2013-03-13 Hi, I have a 1 year old goffin too. He is starting to test his beak with biting. I've noticed this more since he has been not too nicely treated by my conures (I think they nipped his toes). Anyway, he now knows that is a good weapon and can persuade me to do what he wants. This is what I'm doing when he does that. First, at the very moment he attempts to bite harder than just grasping, I voice a strong 'BAD' and put him either in his cage or back on his perch. If they are not around, I put him down several feet away from me. He is learning that that behavior will not be tolerated. His goal is to be near me and play with me...so I think he's learning. So far so good....I do catch him occasionally (once every few months), but the 'BAD!' sounds quickly makes an impact. Hope this helps!!!
Penny - 2004-08-04 You could not ask for a more fun loving, busy little bird. I have had Chloe for 4 years now,( she was a rescue bird). And I would not trade her for the world! She is sweet, loving, happy go lucky, center of attention, spoiled lil brat. She cries for attention, but knows I will not give in to her every whim. She has tons of toys and plays with every one of them. Her favorate thing to do is string beads! She will string beads for hours, and I spend hours picking them all up and stringing them for her so she can start all over again, destring and string. She is a Blast.

Terra Baker - 2008-12-01 Hi all you Goffins lovers. I have a 4 year old male Goffins. I got him at a bird show when he was quite young and he was parrot raised so he wasn't real people orientated. People just kept holding him and cuddling and you could see he was scared, but when I finally decided to hold him he went right under my hair and started to play with it and give me kisses. That was it, I bought him and home we went. It took a few weeks for him to get used to me putting my hands in his cage to get him. I literally had to pry him out and then just cuddle and talk to him. Now a few years later he loves me to death, he talks to me, dances, and sings. If I am sitting on the couch he climbs down from his playstand and climbs up the couch to visit and play. He is so funny. I love all my birds but he holds a special place in my heart. So if you decide a Goffins is for you then you will not be disappointed in him but as people have said they are escape artists and they will chew up anything. So be prepared, and as big a cage as you can get is the best. Mine is in a macaw cage. He is very active, so this way he has lots of room to jump around. Terra, Kermie (Eclectus). Geromino (Goffins). and Miso ( African Grey), all from chicago.

KNinVA - 2013-03-13 Hi Terra. I totally agree with you. My Goffin loves to cuddle and play AND DESTROY Toys....but they are supposed to. The downside of this is it is costly. For those of you thinking about getting a Goffin - I spend about $100 every two weeks just on toys! I'm now starting to purchase toy parts and make my own because it is costly.....be prepared...these little guys need lots of stimulus and a daily does of destruction!!!
monasue - 2013-02-22 I have Goffin Cockatoo, her name is Summysue. She is very smart and playful bird. Also I have 2 cackatiel. All of them are different character. Summysue kiss, to my husband then never doing no more. I don't know why? She talk a lot say her own name, say how are you? are you okay?, hello, pangit, mickie name of one cackatiel. then the other one is alex. Irene.... come-on, good night, she sing and dance. I thought I just got lucky for this bird. Suddenly she doesn't come to me no more. It's hurt me a lot. I love this bird. and also she do plucking her feather too. It's very dis appointed for me and my husband. We just get good attention to those cackatiels. They sing, kiss and talk to the phone to my husband. I don't know how I return the sweetest Summysue again in our life? Hoping someday she's come to us again and give her LOVE some more.

KNinVA - 2013-03-13 Hi, I have a 1 yr old Goffin, and I'm nervous about behavior problems too. From my reading and research, this is due to stress and being upset because your Summysue wants to be your sole companion....she doesn't want to share you and is jealous. I have two conures as well and I notice this when i give them attention. I've had birds for about 40 years now. If you have eliminated any medical condition via your vet, then I suggest this is the reason. One suggestion is to move the Goffin cage to another room, and spend AT LEAST one hour a day playing with just her. Cocktoos are basically 2 year olds that constantly demand your attention and to be stimulated. Goffins can play in their cages more easily than the other cockatoo types, but they also need daily one-on-one attention. Oh, and one more thing, make sure you have plenty of toys in the cage that he can destroy....wood is best for cockatoos. Hope things improve for you!
Jennifer - 2013-02-21 Recently I had bought a beautiful parakeet at Petsmart. He had a pretty blue body a yellow head and a beautiful teal green tail feathers. He was about 4-5months old. He died four days later!!! It's a disgrace to pet stores the way they keep their animals. Please reply I agree if you would like to change the way pet stores keep their animals.

KNinVA - 2013-03-13 Jennifer, I hope you went back to Petsmart with your receipt and got your money back. They have a 15 day policy. I'm sorry for your loss!
Diana - 2012-08-30 I just got a 4 month old goffin cockatoo. Is there any inside info from other goffin owners know that the pet shop do not tell you cause they just want the sale ( they are concerned about weight and she is getting one to two bedtime hand feedings ). In the past I've had smaller birds. The one I have now is a cockatiel the biggest I've ever had any thing. I need to know that the pet shop will or forgot to tell me

Charlie Roche - 2012-08-30 A goffin is an extremely loving, affectionate companion. They love their humans. Sometimes i say most birds say 'you should love me' but a cockatoo always says 'I love you'. Tell me about these two bedtime feedings and how much? I would be feeding her one bedtime feeding right before bed and posssibly 30cc in the morning. So two feedings but not both at night. Goffins like otehr cockatoos EAT WOOD. I mean they can take a 2 x 4 by 6 feet long and make it look like a stack of tooth picks in a week. Good toys is take a 2 x 4 by 6 untreated pine and cut it into blocks, put a hole through it and hang it on a dog chain. It's possibly the only way to keep them in wood. They should have their own perch separate from their cage. Husband and wife told me they were having major problems as they would put their cockatoo in its cage at 6 pm (after being out all day) and then turn the TV on and eat dinner and their cockatoo would just scream. I said to give the cockatoo a little of what they were having for dinner and come dark or when they turned TV off or after dinner - put the cockatoo away. I said they were eating in front of a 3 uyear old dressed in feathers. If you think of your new addition as a human child of three dressed in feathers who lies to destroy wood - you shouldn't have any problems.
Paulette - 2013-02-06 hahahahaha, I've never heard anyone put it any better, than you just did!!! Cockatoo's are big babies with feathers, that always stay like a 3 yr old little child!! Never, ever, eat in front of this little bird, without giving it a taste or have a bird treat handy. They love bread, like Arnold OatNut or any of the multi-grain breads. Have little carrot or celery sticks available to give them, while you eat. Always treat them like a companion, for they love you so much and look up to you, like a small child looks up to their mommy and daddy! I make sure that I give my Goffin at least 2 to 3 hours of 'hold-time' each day. When I say, hold-time, I mean just that, not out of the cage time, but in your lap, rubbing their neck time!! Yes, you must give them wood toys, or they will find the wood in your home and eat it, through and through, like your dining room table, door or window frames, or even your kitchen cabinets! If you do not have the time to give this bird, you should not buy this bird, for it will develop dependency issues and pluck themselves bald!! Good luck and the best to you and your new baby!! What a joy in life our little girl has brought into our home!!!
Libba - 2006-09-30 I just recently got a cockatoo, the blue eyed kind. She is now 9months old. I also have a quaker, indian ring neck and two love birds. Angel my cockatoo is the sweetest bird, she had learned within days of having her how to say mommy, I love you, give kisses, and I am working on teaching her more words. She has a stand and a large cage. She is held by me, and my two 8 year old daughters. I do put her on her stand and her cage so she is not being held all day. I have learned that is bad for her and can harm her. In don't want her used to being held all day then putting her up and having her hurt herself out of depression. Angel has never bitten anyone in my family, she is so loving ans sweet, she has the funniest personality, she loves to dance and show off her feathers. She loves to go outside with me, I just got her a harness for extra protection. I just recently had to take her to the vet ER, she broke a major blood feather, so please on the young ones watch their blood feathers. they are still babies, clumsly and can die fast if their blood feather is broken. if you do not have the Styptic powder you can use flour until you can get your cockatoo to a vet. The best thing is to have the blood feather pulled, because there is a good chance they will continue to hurt it. I am so glad Angel picked me when I went to the pet store, I can't imagine my life without her and I find the cockatoo is one of the most beautiful, smart, outgoing and silliest birds out there. Just please make sure you have time for them before you buy them, they are cuddle bugs and do need extra love and attention. I am disabled and believe me the love you get in return is worth the extra time and effort, you have just found a best friend for life. Thanks, Libba

Paulette - 2013-02-06 Oh, I totally agree, for I too, own a Goffin's Cockatoo! They are extremely sweet, but yet, extremely needed little bundles of love! It takes a special owner to own one of these God's creatures! You have to hold these birds, but yet, not too much, for they will become depressed and turn to feather destruction. So, a nice balancing act of affection and alone time is required each and everyday of these bird's lives! I own 15 lovebirds and just one little girl Goffin, who will be a year old in April 2013. I, too, am disabled and have ample time for all my birds. The lovebirds and cockatoo do NOT get along at all!!! Each one is jealous of the other! Heck, the lovebirds are jealous of each other, as well, not at just the cockatoo!!! But, you do NOT for any reason, what to allow these two different birds, any time alone with each other, for the little lovebird will be killed instantly! My live is so much better with my babies in it! I honestly, do not know what I'd do without my loving babies!! Thank you, Lord, for bringing each of them into my life! I hand raised each and every one of the lovebirds from eggs, so they are so, so, sweet!! Still, today, I have to hand feed my goffin twice a day, but I'm working on weaning her little by little, with less and less hand formula. She sits and cries constantly, each and every morning, until she gets her nice, hot, food, fed by her mommie!! What a life! I honestly, would not change a thing....
Nikki - 2013-02-01 I have a 5 1/2 year old Goffin Cockatoo, her name is CiCi. She is so spoiled. She sits on my husbands chest and watches television every night. Recently she had been plucking the feathers on her chest. She isn't missing many, but I can tell they are gone. She gets a new toy every week or so because she destroys them so quickly. She has a perch she plays on most of the time. Nothing has changed in our environment that I can think of. I just don't want her to be bald one day. What can I do? I have made an appointment for her to see the vet, but was hoping I could get my question answered prior to getting there.

Jasmine Brough Hinesley - 2013-02-01 Cockatoos are very prone to plucking their feathers. How long has it been going on? I think it's a good idea to take her to the vet. I would take a watch and see approach for a few days and see if any more go missing. If they get too bored that can bring on plucking. Has she been getting less attention recently? It's also possible she is getting sick - a respiratory illness - or has parasites. All things to check for.
Nikki - 2013-02-03 I have made her an appointment. She goes in this week. I have not seen any signs of plucking over the weekend at all, but I was with her all weekend. She has been getting a little less attention than normal. My husband started an internship for school, and he is gone more. Maybe that is it because she normally is with him. I noticed this past week that she is paying attention to both of us, and that is not normal for her either. She started out with only allowing me to handle her, and then it was only my husband. Now she spends equal time with both of us. She will jump from one of us to the other. We are still in the adjustment period I think. We have not had her very long. My boss had her for over two years, and then when she started traveling a lot she gave her to us. She hasn't been with us a year yet. So I will see what the vet says, and continue to love her! Thanks.
Jasmine Brough Hinesley - 2013-02-04 I'm glad she seems to have not been plucking her feathers over the weekend! From my experience, feather plucking is almost always related to not receiving as much attention and/or stress. Cockatoos are very needy birds in the social department! I hope things work out and that the vet has some good insight. Best of luck!
Nikki - 2012-09-15 I was recently given a Goffin's Cockatoo by a co-worker. She was hatched in April of 2007, so I guess that makes her just over 5 years old. So far she is like having a small child. She enjoys spending time on my lap while I watch television, and she will scream until I go to the cage to pick her up. I have two cockatiels as well that I was given a month prior to adopting my cockatoo. My cockatoo has started crouching down on my hand while I am holding her, and she will try to sit on my hand. The only time I see her do it is when she is on my hand. I am not sure I know what she is doing, but I have a pretty good idea. Is she trying to mate with my hand?

Charlie Roche - 2012-09-16 She is just reaching puberty and a natural behavior but chances are you have the behavior correct. Just remove your hand and pick her up and hold her like the baby she is and tell her you lov her and put her down for a minute or so.
Dave W - 2012-10-02 I have a 6 month old goffin that we just brought home on Saturday. He is always crying and fluffing up we have two dogs and it seems that the bird is afraid of them how can we get them to bond?
Click For Replies (3)
Charlie Roche - 2012-10-02 Goffins do that. They cry a lot and they fluff up and shake their feathers. I don't know any way to insure the bird will bond with the dogs but as time goes by and she realizes the pups aren't goong to hurt her and don't have access to her she should calm down about that. As far as the crying - yes they do it but I would give her some bird formula (you can use a spoon and just lay the formula on her tongue) or baby food sweet potatoes, cereal, apricots etc She is new to your home and possibly not eatings as much as she should and cryings. They do it but no harm in giving her some food. Consider it a bonding experience between you and her.

My boss had her for over two years, and then when she started traveling a lot she gave her to us. She hasn't been with us a year yet. So I will see what the vet says, and continue to love her! Thanks.
I'm glad she seems to have not been plucking her feathers over the weekend! From my experience, feather plucking is almost always related to not receiving as much attention and/or stress. Cockatoos are very needy birds in the social department! I hope things work out and that the vet has some good insight. Best of luck!
I was recently given a Goffin's Cockatoo by a co-worker.
She is just reaching puberty and a natural behavior but chances are you have the behavior correct. Just remove your hand and pick her up and hold her like the baby she is and tell her you lov her and put her down for a minute or so.
Thank you.
I have a 6 month old goffin that we just brought home on Saturday. He is always crying and fluffing up we have two dogs and it seems that the bird is afraid of them how can we get them to bond?
Goffins do that.
Hatch date is 3/23/2012 not 5/12
