I have read the comment by Ronald, saying that the cross of Carduellis cuculata and the canary does not lead to fertile hybrids and that the insertion of the siskin's red factor to obtain the redfactor canary is a myth.Unfortunately Ronald, I can assure you that I, myself, have already produced lots of fertile F1s from that mating and definitely it is not a myth. If you do not believe it, just get a male venezuelan siskin, cross it with a canary and check the fertility of some male offsprings. The females are not fertyle, but, a good percentage of the males are. Try it, before getting to the final conclusion. Venceslau Barbosa da Silva

I am just starting to learn about the canary. I have always wanted a singing canary and my favourite colour is orange so to have an orange singing canary I would be all in my glory. I was told that my canary is not a red factor so I had no hope. A friend of mine gave me some red granulated stuff that he feeds his canary to keep it orange, I tried it and mine is turning colour. What is this stuff and where can I buy it?

Hi, you can find it at any pet store, is is not dangerous for your birds, only problem is that if you stop to supply it as your bird is not a mosaic or a red factor, your bird will get back to his normal color.

Hi, I have a Lizard Canary I bought from a Breeder, she has a Crest Top..She is Tan in color. She had a brood of 4, 3 tan and 1 Yellow. The father is also a Lizard and is in the cage with all and some Finches...they are very playful.. she is now sitting on 4 more eggs...the others are the size of her and the male and of course eat on their own for some time. I have a question to ask if I may...HOW OLD WILL THEY BE WHEN YOU FIND OUT WHAT SEX THEY ARE? Love these sooo much...

I have had a red factor canary for the last 6 years and he is healthy and apparently happy as he sings daily and in the evening if the light is on. People that visit and hear him sing cannot believe his song and the loudness and duration. I am asked to go into another room if on the phone, or have difficulty watching TV and hearing while he is singing. I have owned many canaries in the past but the performance of this guy is without parallel. He would be considered a Master by a breeder if in a room full of young learning how to sing. Thanks for the information I received by reading your site and good luck in the future.

Are birds exposed to the virus can't be 100% health ? Because my canaries exposed to the virus that has been paralyzing his legs. How do I treat my canary ?

Unless your bird has been in contact with diseased birds, a virus or bacterial disease would be fairly unlikely.  Newcastle Disease is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect canaries. But canaries are well known for their delicate respiratory systems. Exposure to airborn toxins can create a variety of problems, including paralysis.

Your pet could have aspergillosis, a respiratory disease caused by the fungus aspergillus, which is commonly found in the environment. If any portion of the central nervous system has become involved due to this illness, the bird may have tremors, an uneven or wobbly gait, seizures, or paralysis. Aspergillosis can be treated with an anti-fungal medicine.

Canaries are very hardy birds and almost all illnesses can be traced to improper diet, dirty cages, and drafts. A balanced diet and plenty of exercise will prevent most canary illnesses.

How old are Glouster Canaries when they grow their mop? I keep looking at my 2yr old, thinking it's top feathers are growing, but it could be my imagination.

They acieve their mop when they achieve sexual maturity.  However, it is the Gloster Corona that achieves the crest (mop).  The gloster does not.
  • Anonymous - 2013-12-09
My friend this is developed at a very young age , when the chicks are in the nest you will be able to tell the difference between the Corona chicks and the consort. The consort has the plain head. Hope this helps you. Kind regards, Andrew.
