Putting this warning on the web site for other owners. I keep both Border and Fife Canaries. Last week when I went to feed my birds, found 6 dead. 5 were in the same cage, not flying free in the aviary. One dead in the aviary. Looking at the bodies, all were grouped around the feeding dish and the aviary bird lay below the feeding table. Clearly not a virus, as all my other birds were OK. But only these 6 birds had consumed greenery from ASDA, they had eaten outer leaves of a cabbage. There must have been a toxin, either fertilizer/pesticides there as they died where they stood. In the future I am only going to feed greenery and sprouted grain which I have grown on myself.

WARNING - PLANT TOXIN RESIDUES KILL CANARIES - I am putting this info on the web site to warn other canary owners. I am not a breeder but I have a large number of canaries, both Fife and Borders. Last week, I found 6 of my birds dead, 5 in the one cage, when I went to feed them. Horrendous sight as the 5 bodies were lying beside the feeding dish on the bottom of the cage and another bird, that had not been caged, lying below the aviary feeding table. All these birds had eaten outer greenery from a supermarket bought cabbage. From the grouping of the bodies and the fact that the other birds which had not eaten the greenery were OK, suggests there was a toxin on the cabbage, weed killer or fertilizers. My birds were in tip top condition and so I am certain this was not a virus, but a toxin. From now on, I am going to give only greenery which I have grown myself.

I have read the comment by Ronald, saying that the cross of Carduellis cuculata and the canary does not lead to fertile hybrids and that the insertion of the siskin's red factor to obtain the redfactor canary is a myth.Unfortunately Ronald, I can assure you that I, myself, have already produced lots of fertile F1s from that mating and definitely it is not a myth. If you do not believe it, just get a male venezuelan siskin, cross it with a canary and check the fertility of some male offsprings. The females are not fertyle, but, a good percentage of the males are. Try it, before getting to the final conclusion. Venceslau Barbosa da Silva

I am just starting to learn about the canary. I have always wanted a singing canary and my favourite colour is orange so to have an orange singing canary I would be all in my glory. I was told that my canary is not a red factor so I had no hope. A friend of mine gave me some red granulated stuff that he feeds his canary to keep it orange, I tried it and mine is turning colour. What is this stuff and where can I buy it?

Hi, you can find it at any pet store, is is not dangerous for your birds, only problem is that if you stop to supply it as your bird is not a mosaic or a red factor, your bird will get back to his normal color.

Hi, I have a Lizard Canary I bought from a Breeder, she has a Crest Top..She is Tan in color. She had a brood of 4, 3 tan and 1 Yellow. The father is also a Lizard and is in the cage with all and some Finches...they are very playful.. she is now sitting on 4 more eggs...the others are the size of her and the male and of course eat on their own for some time. I have a question to ask if I may...HOW OLD WILL THEY BE WHEN YOU FIND OUT WHAT SEX THEY ARE? Love these sooo much...

I have had a red factor canary for the last 6 years and he is healthy and apparently happy as he sings daily and in the evening if the light is on. People that visit and hear him sing cannot believe his song and the loudness and duration. I am asked to go into another room if on the phone, or have difficulty watching TV and hearing while he is singing. I have owned many canaries in the past but the performance of this guy is without parallel. He would be considered a Master by a breeder if in a room full of young learning how to sing. Thanks for the information I received by reading your site and good luck in the future.
