I just bought a canary that has autumn colors. Can 't tell if it is a male or female. The store says it should sing but nothing yet. I was told that I should get two to sing. Is this true? Also, I have parakeets. Do they get along with canaries? Thanks.

Those 2 kind of birds are worst enemies I knew somebody who had a canary her daughter got herself a parakeet they try to fight even though they were in separate cages and also will squawk at each other in a yelling way. I got 2 parakeets blue and violet and getting a scarlet macaw.

Some years back I use to own a pair of red coloured yorkshire canaries. The male was a top singer even though he was kept with the hen. And they bred in their cage, which I use to leave open most of the time. The cock use to thrill me by flying and hopping in a peculiar manner after the hen and he use to sing the most wonderful songs echoing right through the whole house. It was really fun to watch. Being so large, they are less flighty then the smaller breeds and quite tame.

Can 'iceberg' lettuce harm my timbrado canary?

I can't say that it would 'harm' them but it sure doesn't do them any good and it can give them diarrhea - so there is possible harm. There is no nutritional value in iceberg lettuce. Endive, kale - green leafy vegetables - great. Cabbage also can give them diarrhea. Too many grapes or too much fruit can also give them diarrhea so little fruit, green leafy vegetables and anything you eat that is nutricious is fine including chicken. Scrambled eggs with veggies -- great.

I have a one year old yellowish-green timbrado. He is testing out his voice but I have noticed, when I play canaries singing fron youtube, he has started to sing more and stronger too. I give him mixed seeds and clean water daily, also a treat everyday. For example a grape, a cooked egg, or lettuce. Got a question, are these treats good for him to eat?

Cooked egg, scrambled egg (and you can leave the chell in as calcium) - anything that you eat that is nutricious he can have except avocado - and chocolate (sorry about that). Iceberg lettuce doesn't provide any nutition so go for the endive or kale and green kleafy vegetables. Those things aren't treats - maybe a grape is but one is fine. Piece of apple, chicken, brocoli - those are good foods. They are good for him - Just light on the fruit cuz diarrhea.

Forgot the other part. There are bird singing DVD's and actual movies of birds singing. I use the movies and the birds seem to sing back or talk back keep rhythm etc. There might be actually canaries singing on a DVD (wrong word) that you can play for them. They will lie it.

Hi, I have two canaries, one female for sure and the other is a corona head canary. Here is the issue, he doesn't sing, and I have not see "him" interested in her. This morning we discovered two eggs, and both are sitting in the nest. Is this normal parents behavior or they are two females? Please advise. The pet shop assured me it was male.

You definitely have 2 hens, unless you have experience with birds, the only way to tell 100% is the cocks whistles, the hen just chirps.
  • Leila - 2011-08-10
The same thing happened to me once. The petshop insisted that it was a cock but both of them were building a nest and they laid eggs and both sat on them! Of course it never hatched so I purchased a cock bird and the resulting chicks grew into beautiful birds! Yes, the cock only sings and the hen chirps.

if its a male it sings if its a female it does not!

My yellow Roller canary used to sing beautifully, even after I introduced him to a Red-factor female canary last February, he continued to sing although not as often. They share the same cage and have mated this Spring. He stopped singing as usual during molting in June and July. Now that molting is done, he still has not started singing again. What do you advise me to do?

Sees a little strange. I'd say you could try whistling but I don't know that would work. I don't know where you live but weather has been a little crazy this year and my birds are still molting. They also were in lousy moods this year with their molt and just having a rough time. I actaully went back and made formula for them. The oldest is 27 years old and he took the formula - no porblem. So maybe your canary is still molting. You can try shitling though - OK?
