Just came across this site. How nice. I have a white-fronted Amazon named Leo. He's been with me for over 10 years now. He's my best buddy. Loves to cuddle and just be with me. He traveled from North Idaho to San Diego riding high next to me in a 17-foot u-haul truck. He enjoyed every minute--a real traveling bird. "Good bird" and "I love you" are his favorite vocalizations, although he doesn't articulate very well, I know what he's saying. He also whistles, warbles and imitates squeeking doors, zippers and cheering crowds! He's on my shoulder right now sticking his beak in my ear!!

My double yellow-headed Amazon is the best pet I ever had. I rescued him from someone who just didn't want him anymore. I thought, "What the heck!" and took him. I had parakeets before, but nothing compares to Oscar. I named him Oscar after Oscar Madison of "The Odd Couple." Oscar was, if you remember, the messy one. Well, "Oscar" is the perfect name for my lovable slob. He makes such a mess when he eats. And if I give him something soft to eat, like a piece of squash or other soft vegetable, he ends up with it all over his face. It's quite a sight. Oscar is very friendly with me, but not so with other people. I think it's because I am not afraid of him, I trust him, and he trusts me. We rough-house all the time. He rolls over and lets me scratch his belly. He likes to be scratched behind his "ears." He doesn't talk an awful lot, mostly "hi", "by" something that sounds like "grandma" and "Melissa". He laughs a lot, and when left alone, he can be heard chatting away as if he were talking to a friend on the phone. This is something he must have picked up from a previous owner. Overall, he is great to have around. He is very entertaining, and I'm so glad he likes me too.

I first met my blue fronted amazon, Yoda, the day he hatched and now he is about 10 months old and the absolute joy of our house hold. He has 2 cages, a perch outside and a perch in our bedroom that he sleeps on every night. He has a excellent vocabulary that he is adding to ever day! He even tries to sing "take me out to the ball game" which is hilarious becuase he gets the words mixed up but has the tune down pat! He absolutley insists on eating with the family and he rivals our children with his ability to make a mess. We do a lot of entertaining and Yoda loves the excitment of a crowd. When ever a lot of people around you never know what he may say but one thing is for sure, it will be loud!

I've had Gonzo my orange winged amazon for 14 years now ( he is 19 ).
I adopted him from his previous owner who could't care less about him.
He is the most loving and affectionate bird. He gets along well with my 3 other birds, a quaker, moustached parakeet and conure. I trained him to break balloons and if he ever see's one he goes after it. He is so bonded to me that he screams when I leave the room. These birds make excellent pets. He loves to go outside for walks with me. He is also the mascott of our classic car cruise-in and goes weekly.

hi my name is martin. i live in west sussex england.

my senegal totty sadly died suddenly aged 9 over xmas.

we decided on a different bird so as not to replace her. after touring several outlets and taking a shine to a couple of amazons we were chosen by joe, a 7-month old YNA to be his companions.

hes very funny, chatty and playful-very calm, doesnt get rattled.

on his first day at home he tried to land on my aquarium, skidded off and fell headfirst down the back of it. he clung on with his feet and i had to lift him out backwards! he didnt care at all and promptly said hello and played with his toys.

my girlfriend julie and i have 2 houses. yesterday we got a carry cage and a play tower which we have put in her home. we brought him over in the car and he seemed to enjoy the ride and he spent all day on his new tower.

hes just said Hello Mummy (ie Julie)!

hes definitely a girls bird, he tolerates me and will take treats, has kissed me on the nose, but he loves julie.

he is one cool parrot.

Our family recently aquired a male Orange Winged Amazon named Gonzo. He came from a breeder who owned another bird that had come from a shelter. The other bird has taught Gonzo to bark like a little dog both loudly and quietly as if imitating a dog that is outside. It is so funny. He is 8 months old and is now imitating the wolf call whistle and will bark like a dog when he wants attention. He is extremely loveable and a wonderful addition to our family. He is a little jealous of our cherry headed conure but I am sure that will pass in time. His favorite treats are pistachios and Almonds in the shell.

Six months ago we adopted a 15 year old Blue Amazon named Patrick. He was not abused, but was also not really socialized and almost never left his cage. Now he travels all over the house, takes occasional rides on my shoulder and loves to be kissed and scritched. I am thankful to his old family who realized that he needed more attention and gave him to us. I am also thankful for my wife Lisa and her infinate patience with all of our 4 parrots.

Scoopers was rescued from a breeder that had her paired with another female for a decade or more. Her lower jaw was broken earlier in life but she does very well despite the offset. She is the sweetest most gregarious amazon I've ever seen.

i have had a 10 month old orange winged amazon for a week now and i personally think it is one of the most affectionate birds ever! It acts like a baby cockatoo and loves to be held by anyone who will hold it. If you get a baby hand fed orange winged amazon you are most definitely in for a treat! already says hello and has only been here for a week! HIGHLY recommended bird!

It's nice to hear from a few others who have had the pleasure of having a white fronted as a companion. I had a 11 yr. old. She recently passed, reason unknown. Her actions spoke louder than words. What a little lover she was, my very best friend and we were always together. I will have another one(female)in breeding season. I agree with the first comment on this page, I too would like to compare with the subspecies. L Harner 12/20/2005
