I had two parakeets that I bought at the pet store. I had them for a one or a week in half . One morning I found that one was dead. We thought that our son did something to it, so we went and bought another bird and the next morning the other bird was dead. So we assumed that the bird killed them is there andy reason why it did this?

I wouldn't assume that the other bird did it.  Did you see any scratches or signs of a fight?  It is pretty rare that birds get into that kind of fight.  I would assume that the birds are ill or for some odd reason became quite frightened and flew into the side of the cage and broke their neck.

some birds DON'T want company and I have known a female keet to kill any other keet you put in her cage. so yes, they CAN kill the others. did you feel the birds to see if their neck was snapped? look under the feathers to see condition of the birds? did you have a night light to cut down on night fright (yes I've had birds die from getting night fright/scared and crash into the cage.. another broke it's wing).

Hello, it is nice to have someone to talk to and ask questions. My name is Pam. My daughter brought home 2 young cockatiels that she got from her teacher just before Christmas. The mother was biting and pulling the feathers out of their neck. They are soooo sweet. I was on craigs list looking for a better cage for them and I came across a Military Mccraw with cage for rehoming. So, I called and I'm now mom. He is so smart. He talks all the time. I can't always understand him, but he seams to pick up words quickly. Milton bonded to me rather quickley within a few hrs, he was sitting in my lap on his back, but he won't let anyone else touch him. He bit the stuffing out of my daughter the first night, and now she is scared to get close to him, and I think he knows it. He has nipped at my husb. and won't let him pet him, but will get on his arm if I'm not around. I have warned others to keep a wide birth. I think in time he will accept others in the family. I'm not sure he will ever be stranger friendly. Any thoughts? I was so hoping that he would be. I have to admit that I am a bit leary of him, even though he likes me and wants me to hold and pet him, he often nibbles on me and some times he gets overzealous and bites down. (it HURTS) Any thoughts on that. Also---(I have lots of questions; I hope you don't mind.) I have been reading about the Mccaw diet. I have offered him various fruits and veggies. I have even brought them over and started eatting them in frouht of him to get him intrested. (No LUCK) Last night I set down in my chair with a ear of corn and some hot wings. He was after my plate. I offered him the corn thinking he must be after that. He compleatly ignored it, and grabed himself a hot-wing. I have to say, I felt a little weird about a bird eating chicken. I didn't know they would eat meat. Is it OK for them to have some? That is it for now, but ...I'LL BE BACK. See-Ya Pam.

I know a lot of people who feed their macaws and other large parrots chicken! Many large birds are a fan of it. It is ok in moderation - but obviously you don't want his entire diet to consist of chicken. As far as him bonding to people other than you - well the more time you spend with him the more bonded he will become to you. Most macaws are 'one person' birds. If you want him to bond to other people as well, you will have to make a point of spending less time with him and have other people spend more time with him. This can help make him more well-rounded.

As long as the bleeding didn't continue he should be fine. If he is acting normal I wouldn't worry at all. Occasionally birds will lose their feathers and as long as  they aren't plucking all their feathers there is no concern.

Hello everyone. I have two beautiful and healthy society finches for two years now. Unfortunatelly I am developing some kind of allergy and my doctor suspects it is from the birds. I live in Bergen County, NJ. Can you advice me how to find them a new home. I want them to be happy.

You could take them to a local pet store and see if they would buy them or take them for free. You could also put an ad in the paper or on Craigslist.

I have had two lovebirds for almost two years..they recently started getting into some really bad fights, and yesterday the male was sounded so badly that he died. Should I get another one right away, or will she accept another male? Right now she is running around the cage looking for him and calling for him. I talk to her with whistles and kisses, and she comes up and talks to me, but I canot handle her...

Lovebirds do get lonely and often do better in pairs. What you could do is get another one and keep it in a separate cage. Put the cages next to each other so that they can get to know each other. This way they would each have a companion but you wouldn't have to worry about them getting into physical fights. Eventually you could try putting them together.

I just got a 4 month old goffin cockatoo. Is there any inside info from other goffin owners know that the pet shop do not tell you cause they just want the sale ( they are concerned about weight and she is getting one to two bedtime hand feedings ). In the past I've had smaller birds. The one I have now is a cockatiel the biggest I've ever had any thing. I need to know that the pet shop will or forgot to tell me

A goffin is an extremely loving, affectionate companion.  They love their humans.  Sometimes i say most birds say 'you should love me' but a cockatoo always says 'I love you'.  Tell me about these two bedtime feedings and how much?  I would be feeding her one bedtime feeding right before bed and posssibly 30cc in the morning.  So two feedings but not both at night.  Goffins like otehr cockatoos EAT WOOD.  I mean they can take a 2 x 4 by 6 feet long and make it look like a stack of tooth picks in a week.  Good toys is take a 2 x 4 by 6 untreated pine and cut it into blocks, put a hole through it and hang it on a dog chain.  It's possibly the only way to keep them in wood.  They should have their own perch separate from their cage.  Husband and wife told me they were having major problems as they would put their cockatoo in its cage at 6 pm (after being out all day) and then turn the TV on and eat dinner and their cockatoo would just scream.  I said to give the cockatoo a little of what they were having for dinner and come dark or when they turned TV off or after dinner - put the cockatoo away.  I said they were eating in front of a 3 uyear old dressed in feathers.  If you think of your new addition as a human child of three dressed in feathers who lies to destroy wood - you shouldn't have any problems.

hahahahaha, I've never heard anyone put it any better, than you just did!!! Cockatoo's are big babies with feathers, that always stay like a 3 yr old little child!! Never, ever, eat in front of this little bird, without giving it a taste or have a bird treat handy. They love bread, like Arnold OatNut or any of the multi-grain breads. Have little carrot or celery sticks available to give them, while you eat. Always treat them like a companion, for they love you so much and look up to you, like a small child looks up to their mommy and daddy! I make sure that I give my Goffin at least 2 to 3 hours of 'hold-time' each day. When I say, hold-time, I mean just that, not out of the cage time, but in your lap, rubbing their neck time!! Yes, you must give them wood toys, or they will find the wood in your home and eat it, through and through, like your dining room table, door or window frames, or even your kitchen cabinets! If you do not have the time to give this bird, you should not buy this bird, for it will develop dependency issues and pluck themselves bald!! Good luck and the best to you and your new baby!! What a joy in life our little girl has brought into our home!!!

Some birds just HATE bathing - I don't care what anyone says.  I place one in a walk in shower and turn the water on and he seems to sorta like that.  Another - I can always count on every time I run the vacumn, he will run into and bathe in his water bowl or any other bowl.  Another we bathe in the kitchen sink with a sprayer.  I also use Aloe Bird Bath.  I have no great idea except just try things.  He may NEVER like it.  I have also found it is much easier to bathe them when it is raining.  Most love their baths but some just don't.  Tail - this is the time of year when parrots are at their worst looking.  There old feathers - many of them especially when no bathing - look tattereed and dry.  They are the old feathers.  They are going to replace every feathers this time of the year in a big molt - all the old feathers will go and all the new ones will come in.

My eclectus did the same thing. Hated bathing, so we can only bath her with us and perferably with my husband as he is her fav.

I just recently got a cockatoo, the blue eyed kind. She is now 9months old. I also have a quaker, indian ring neck and two love birds. Angel my cockatoo is the sweetest bird, she had learned within days of having her how to say mommy, I love you, give kisses, and I am working on teaching her more words. She has a stand and a large cage. She is held by me, and my two 8 year old daughters. I do put her on her stand and her cage so she is not being held all day. I have learned that is bad for her and can harm her. In don't want her used to being held all day then putting her up and having her hurt herself out of depression. Angel has never bitten anyone in my family, she is so loving ans sweet, she has the funniest personality, she loves to dance and show off her feathers. She loves to go outside with me, I just got her a harness for extra protection. I just recently had to take her to the vet ER, she broke a major blood feather, so please on the young ones watch their blood feathers. they are still babies, clumsly and can die fast if their blood feather is broken. if you do not have the Styptic powder you can use flour until you can get your cockatoo to a vet. The best thing is to have the blood feather pulled, because there is a good chance they will continue to hurt it. I am so glad Angel picked me when I went to the pet store, I can't imagine my life without her and I find the cockatoo is one of the most beautiful, smart, outgoing and silliest birds out there. Just please make sure you have time for them before you buy them, they are cuddle bugs and do need extra love and attention. I am disabled and believe me the love you get in return is worth the extra time and effort, you have just found a best friend for life.
Thanks, Libba

I have a cockatiel.. I would love to buy more birds.. I've seen in pictures that there are birds all different size get along well.. I'd like to know if it's hard to get all the birds to get along and is it safe for then to share cage?
  • Paulette - 2013-02-06
Oh, I totally agree, for I too, own a Goffin's Cockatoo! They are extremely sweet, but yet, extremely needed little bundles of love! It takes a special owner to own one of these God's creatures! You have to hold these birds, but yet, not too much, for they will become depressed and turn to feather destruction. So, a nice balancing act of affection and alone time is required each and everyday of these bird's lives! I own 15 lovebirds and just one little girl Goffin, who will be a year old in April 2013. I, too, am disabled and have ample time for all my birds. The lovebirds and cockatoo do NOT get along at all!!! Each one is jealous of the other! Heck, the lovebirds are jealous of each other, as well, not at just the cockatoo!!! But, you do NOT for any reason, what to allow these two different birds, any time alone with each other, for the little lovebird will be killed instantly! My live is so much better with my babies in it! I honestly, do not know what I'd do without my loving babies!! Thank you, Lord, for bringing each of them into my life! I hand raised each and every one of the lovebirds from eggs, so they are so, so, sweet!! Still, today, I have to hand feed my goffin twice a day, but I'm working on weaning her little by little, with less and less hand formula. She sits and cries constantly, each and every morning, until she gets her nice, hot, food, fed by her mommie!! What a life! I honestly, would not change a thing....
