It takes time.  Earn the birds trust and do not push it too much.  It will come around.

Hi, I have a 1 year old goffin too. He is starting to test his beak with biting. I've noticed this more since he has been not too nicely treated by my conures (I think they nipped his toes). Anyway, he now knows that is a good weapon and can persuade me to do what he wants. This is what I'm doing when he does that. First, at the very moment he attempts to bite harder than just grasping, I voice a strong 'BAD' and put him either in his cage or back on his perch. If they are not around, I put him down several feet away from me. He is learning that that behavior will not be tolerated. His goal is to be near me and play with me...so I think he's learning. So far so good....I do catch him occasionally (once every few months), but the 'BAD!' sounds quickly makes an impact. Hope this helps!!!

You could not ask for a more fun loving, busy little bird. I have had Chloe for 4 years now,( she was a rescue bird). And I would not trade her for the world! She is sweet, loving, happy go lucky, center of attention, spoiled lil brat. She cries for attention, but knows I will not give in to her every whim. She has tons of toys and plays with every one of them. Her favorate thing to do is string beads! She will string beads for hours, and I spend hours picking them all up and stringing them for her so she can start all over again, destring and string. She is a Blast.

Hi all you Goffins lovers. I have a 4 year old male Goffins. I got him at a bird show when he was quite young and he was parrot raised so he wasn't real people orientated. People just kept holding him and cuddling and you could see he was scared, but when I finally decided to hold him he went right under my hair and started to play with it and give me kisses. That was it, I bought him and home we went. It took a few weeks for him to get used to me putting my hands in his cage to get him. I literally had to pry him out and then just cuddle and talk to him. Now a few years later he loves me to death, he talks to me, dances, and sings. If I am sitting on the couch he climbs down from his playstand and climbs up the couch to visit and play. He is so funny. I love all my birds but he holds a special place in my heart. So if you decide a Goffins is for you then you will not be disappointed in him but as people have said they are escape artists and they will chew up anything. So be prepared, and as big a cage as you can get is the best. Mine is in a macaw cage. He is very active, so this way he has lots of room to jump around. Terra, Kermie (Eclectus). Geromino (Goffins). and Miso ( African Grey), all from chicago.

Hi Terra. I totally agree with you. My Goffin loves to cuddle and play AND DESTROY Toys....but they are supposed to. The downside of this is it is costly. For those of you thinking about getting a Goffin - I spend about $100 every two weeks just on toys! I'm now starting to purchase toy parts and make my own because it is costly.....be prepared...these little guys need lots of stimulus and a daily does of destruction!!!

I have Goffin Cockatoo, her name is Summysue. She is very smart and playful bird. Also I have 2 cackatiel. All of them are different character. Summysue kiss, to my husband then never doing no more. I don't know why? She talk a lot say her own name, say how are you? are you okay?, hello, pangit, mickie name of one cackatiel. then the other one is alex. Irene.... come-on, good night, she sing and dance. I thought I just got lucky for this bird. Suddenly she doesn't come to me no more. It's hurt me a lot. I love this bird. and also she do plucking her feather too. It's very dis appointed for me and my husband. We just get good attention to those cackatiels. They sing, kiss and talk to the phone to my husband. I don't know how I return the sweetest Summysue again in our life? Hoping someday she's come to us again and give her LOVE some more.

Hi, I have a 1 yr old Goffin, and I'm nervous about behavior problems too. From my reading and research, this is due to stress and being upset because your Summysue wants to be your sole companion....she doesn't want to share you and is jealous. I have two conures as well and I notice this when i give them attention. I've had birds for about 40 years now. If you have eliminated any medical condition via your vet, then I suggest this is the reason. One suggestion is to move the Goffin cage to another room, and spend AT LEAST one hour a day playing with just her. Cocktoos are basically 2 year olds that constantly demand your attention and to be stimulated. Goffins can play in their cages more easily than the other cockatoo types, but they also need daily one-on-one attention. Oh, and one more thing, make sure you have plenty of toys in the cage that he can destroy....wood is best for cockatoos. Hope things improve for you!

Recently I had bought a beautiful parakeet at Petsmart. He had a pretty blue body a yellow head and a beautiful teal green tail feathers. He was about 4-5months old. He died four days later!!! It's a disgrace to pet stores the way they keep their animals. Please reply I agree if you would like to change the way pet stores keep their animals.

That is terrible. I am sure it wasn't your fault. You couldn't have done anything wrong in four days. When I was younger I had bird that was a beautiful macaw. I too love birds and I agree.

Jennifer, I hope you went back to Petsmart with your receipt and got your money back. They have a 15 day policy. I'm sorry for your loss!

How do I know that my zebra finch is feeding its babies? Please help they are having four chicks.

Do they spend time in the nest with the babies? Observe the mother and see if she goes in the nest at all - if she does, she is most likely feeding them. Make sure you are providing her with plenty of food for herself and keep her environment stress-free and low-noise.
  • amanda - 2013-03-13
if u look at the chicks you might see little pockets of seeds around the chicks neck they are usually yellow looking and are called the crop. if these look like they have seeds in them then the parents are taking good care of them

I have 4 littlie zebra finches and every time they have one to three eggs they break the eggs and eat them, why?

First, how old are the mating finches? They should be over a year to be sexually mature. Also make sure they are provided with a very well-balanced diet - especially if you are trying to breed them. There should also be a separate nesting area for every pair of zebra finches that are breeding. The different pairs may be getting territorial and eating the eggs may be one way they are being aggressive towards each other. Also, are you sure there are 2 mated pairs? If there is an odd bird out, or too many males or females, this could be a problem as well.

they are missing something in their diet. you can hard boil chicken eggs and grind the shell and hard boiled egg and give it to them

We have reared our ring knecked dove from 3days old. She was fine until she laid two eggs and since then she is friendly with my husband but chases me, squawks and lands on my head and chases me around the room. I have fed her since she was a baby and still help my husband feed her but she always chases me and pecks me. Don't get it why does she hate me?

They are such tiny birds, that they are very delicate. Here's a great guide for handfeeding these babies by Unique Beak: Successfully Handfeeding a Finch.

hi, I have 4months old Alexandria (nane) i don't know it is male or female. I can see a pale yellow ring on the neck. I guess it is male. sometimes my nane is aggressive. every time when nane is hungry, nane does not self feed, he expect me to keep him on my shoulder and takes food from my mouth then he will eat by himself. feeding through my mouth is okay or not? if so, how to stop this?

Humans carry many diseases that birds or other animals can not fight.  I would not recommend this.
