Recently I had bought a beautiful parakeet at Petsmart. He had a pretty blue body a yellow head and a beautiful teal green tail feathers. He was about 4-5months old. He died four days later!!! It's a disgrace to pet stores the way they keep their animals. Please reply I agree if you would like to change the way pet stores keep their animals.

That is terrible. I am sure it wasn't your fault. You couldn't have done anything wrong in four days. When I was younger I had bird that was a beautiful macaw. I too love birds and I agree.

Jennifer, I hope you went back to Petsmart with your receipt and got your money back. They have a 15 day policy. I'm sorry for your loss!

How do I know that my zebra finch is feeding its babies? Please help they are having four chicks.

Do they spend time in the nest with the babies? Observe the mother and see if she goes in the nest at all - if she does, she is most likely feeding them. Make sure you are providing her with plenty of food for herself and keep her environment stress-free and low-noise.
  • amanda - 2013-03-13
if u look at the chicks you might see little pockets of seeds around the chicks neck they are usually yellow looking and are called the crop. if these look like they have seeds in them then the parents are taking good care of them

I have 4 littlie zebra finches and every time they have one to three eggs they break the eggs and eat them, why?

First, how old are the mating finches? They should be over a year to be sexually mature. Also make sure they are provided with a very well-balanced diet - especially if you are trying to breed them. There should also be a separate nesting area for every pair of zebra finches that are breeding. The different pairs may be getting territorial and eating the eggs may be one way they are being aggressive towards each other. Also, are you sure there are 2 mated pairs? If there is an odd bird out, or too many males or females, this could be a problem as well.

they are missing something in their diet. you can hard boil chicken eggs and grind the shell and hard boiled egg and give it to them

We have reared our ring knecked dove from 3days old. She was fine until she laid two eggs and since then she is friendly with my husband but chases me, squawks and lands on my head and chases me around the room. I have fed her since she was a baby and still help my husband feed her but she always chases me and pecks me. Don't get it why does she hate me?

They are such tiny birds, that they are very delicate. Here's a great guide for handfeeding these babies by Unique Beak: Successfully Handfeeding a Finch.

hi, I have 4months old Alexandria (nane) i don't know it is male or female. I can see a pale yellow ring on the neck. I guess it is male. sometimes my nane is aggressive. every time when nane is hungry, nane does not self feed, he expect me to keep him on my shoulder and takes food from my mouth then he will eat by himself. feeding through my mouth is okay or not? if so, how to stop this?

Humans carry many diseases that birds or other animals can not fight.  I would not recommend this.

I have a very bright yellow cockatiel and I dont know what type it is and the vets are finding it hard to tell as well. Do any of you know what it is.

There is really no way to know.  You say it is bright yellow - all over?  Check out 'cockatiel images on the net' as many have shades of yellow but not the entire body yellow.  Many breeders will cross breed cockatiels to obtain a high color also.

Hi. I've been reading up on cockatiels because I wanted to know the lifespan of my lutino cockatiel. He will be 24 years old in April. He is solid white with orange cheeks and a yellow top notch. From what I read a bit ago the female lutinos are very bright in color which might mean yellow.

Hi I've taken over care of a 2-1/2yr Female alexandrine it was hand raised.. The issue is when me or my husband get close to pat it or hold it it attacks pretty quick but when my 4yr son goes to talk and pat it the bird enjoys him and allows him to touch, Is there any chance this bird will grow to like me??

At what age does a male plumhead get its full coloring in? I have found a lady how was a 10 month old male that i want to get but he has hardly no coloring. His head is a little grayish and the rest of him is green. Is this normal. How long do i have to wait for him to be beautiful!?

I have a mated pair of these birds, purchased when they were each about 1 year old. At about a year and a half, the male started molting into the purple head, and as of now at almost 2 years it is not complete. I would expect that by 1 1/2 years old you should start to see the black stripe and a little of the brighter color on the head. The red wing patches will also start to show up on a male at this time. It is very obvious to me as I have a certified female sitting right next to him, but the changes are very subtle at first. If the bird is older than this and no red on the wings, no black stripe and no start of a bright purple head, its probably a female. You can always get it sexed at a vet as well.

when they are 2 to 4 months
  • Charlie Roche - 2011-05-23
It takes them at least a year to get their full coloring in. They have to go through their first major molt for all their new (and more colorful feathers) to come through. So let's say your little guy was born in March (breeding season). He would molt to some extent in August or so and then the following August would be his first major molt. So that would be almost 1 1/2 years. They shed their winter feathers(down) in the spring but the molt (where all new feathers come in occurs at the end of summer.

It will take maybe a year or two.My plum head is 30 years old. If you would like to talk,7274085824. I'm Tim. They will eat almost every thing you will. Stay away from apple seeds, poison. Bell pepper seeds are great and they love them.

I have a plumhead that is a year old that I thought was female but now I am not so sure because it is starting getting redish marks on its head so I am taking this as its a male instead of a female
  • shehroz - 2013-03-10
dear in early age the colour of that bird is like or similar to female but after or on attaining maturity the male is turning to redish(purple) colour. you have male bird so donot be confuse
