I am looking for a new fish for my 55 gallon tank. I have a senegal bichir in there now. Will these two get along nicely? if not then what other fish will work with him? Thanks.

I have 3 bichar and 4 different types of chiclids in there and my needle fish does fine, even during feeding time. So as long as they're too big to swallow, you should be ok with putting needlefish with anything.

Yes the Needle Nose Gar will get along with him. With a Bichir, you don't want a fish smaller than 3 in. But if you are interested in adding a Gar then you need to add only bigger fish. The Gar is a glutton; it will eat anything. Also a Ropefish will get along really well with a Birchir. All these fish require the same type of environment (temp, pH, hard water, etc.).

They are not poisonous, however if the dempsy was floating, the butterfly could have taken nips of it. The fuzz sounds like it could be a fungus, or it could be tissue damage after the fish died.

    no they are not poisonous
try putting them in a tank with fish the same size

Hmm... I don't think they are poisonous, I have one myself and he is in a tank with my jack dempsey, 2 red tailed sharks, 3 sucker fish, and my cute lil guppy..and he just chills at the top, the other fish bump him from time to time but he shows no aggression..kind of a weird mixture I got going, but they seem to find their tank buddies and hang out with them..lol.

I used to have just one 3 & 1/2 inch African Butterfly Fish, now, I got another, a little bigger. I've watched the first go from a very quiet guy, preferring to have his food delivered right by him, to one who now jumps around my goldfish to "attack" his food! He even comes to the front of the tank waiting for supper! One of the most unique and beautiful fish I've ever had.

I've had my butterfly fish for a little over a day now and every time I walk over to the tank to feed it it swims down and hides and it hasn't eaten yet. Why is he doing this and what should I do?

I have a butterfly fish, and angelfish in the same aquarium...the problem is that I have very hard water with a high ph of 8.2....I've tried liquid peat solution and salts to adjust the water...works only temporarily for short periods of time...not much luck...any suggestions? I have high levels of calcium carbonate and bicarbonate in my well water.

Try using ro water, @ a ratio of about 50% tap water and 50%ro, then adjust accordingly. Hopefully your levels should stabilize.

He had a blood blister on his bottom lip, it looked like a cluster of grapes. Today his blister fell off but it took half of his bottom lip off and then it died. What kind of illness was that?

Sounds like he ran too hard into the tank and injured himself. They;re very easily spooked, and shouldn;t be kept with anything that can spook them easily.

Great fish that stays on top and minds its own business. I had 2 but passed away, but not hard to keep at all.

Yeah, I got a question. I had a needle fish before but it died. So I was going to asked you this question because your an expert with this type of fish. I need to know how my needle fish died, I had everything, water temperature, food, and that's about it. I don't know if it needs something else.

I have had my stonefish for about a year and have kept him in freshwater the whole time. At first he was a rather picky eater but now I'm feeding him small comets. He gets about a dozen a month and it seems to keep him happy. He is a very vocal fish and when I am running a vaccum or some such thing he has often voiced his disapproval. He is a fascinating fish to watch and moves devilishly fast compared to what I was expecting.
good luck
