The Rainbow fish is no where near as easy to bred as a molly or guppy. These fish spawn in very fast moving water and would need the current duplicated inorder to properly breed. If you set up the right environment you should be able to breed these fish. The difficulty is getting the tank right and the rest does its own thing.

I must have found a great fish seller, since not only was the boeseman rainbow I bought gorgeously coloured, so were the other rainbow fish I bought! But in any case, this one is a wonderful addition to my rainbow tank. :)

I am glad you found a good supplier cuz it is hard to find some reliable fish people that actually are willing to spend the time to care for their fish, help a person and actually know what they are doing. Good for you.

I found a male and female at a local pet store and have had them in my 55g for a year. The male was 3 inches and showed great color even tho there wasn't other males in the tank. I would always see them schooling up with my roseline barbs. Unfortunately, I came home today and my male had died. I keep up with my tank with general maintence and haven't lost a fish out of the blue in the 2 years I've had the tank up. Has anyone else had this happen with the madagascar rainbows and what can cause it? Other fish seem to be fine. I did add 3 leopard corys a few days ago, but they are harmless. Thoughts?

The Leopard Corydoras certainly did not cause the death of your Rainbowfish. At times, fish simply die, and there are no plausible explanations for why. Perhaps buy another one?

Probably what happened is she laid eggs in the tank somewhere and just too small to notice. They were fertilized and it only takes a week for them to hatch out. So you probably didn't see the eggs and then all of a sudden there is a fry. That is my guess - otherwise, I sure hope you got it on film.

Rainbows eat insects in their natural environment and swim close to the surface. They jump if they are startled or if they are hoping to catch an airborne insect.

Because the are jumpers like many fish da ! Mine get really rambunctious at feeding so I dont walk away from my tank with the lid up .

These are beautiful fish. I have four different species of rainbows in a 37 gallon mixed with a few emerald and peppered corys and they do quite well they are fun to watch. Just be careful what fish you mix in. In my experience they are also killers yes killers .... Happy fishing

Just set up a 65 gal with 12 Angels, 6 cory cats, 1 bristlenose pleco, 1 male betta.....would 2 rainbows round off the tank or would they be too active for the angels? Thanks for the help.

Rule of thumb is 1 gallon for each inch your fish will be as an adult. You have to subtract gallons for the gravel, decorations and bedding. The angels can get up to 6 inches - that is a minimum 75 gallon tank needed just for them. The tank is too small for the fish you have already. I would also read up on some information regarding how well all these guys get along full grown. Sorry about that. Maybe a good excuse to get another tank though so more fun.

I bought 7 "Australian" Rainbows, but as they are getting their colors, some have red tail and fins and some have red. Any ideas what these rainbows might really be? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I dont know for sure but perhaps the ones with the red tails are male, because males tend to be more colorful.
